Leonard Nimoy, the sonorous, gaunt-faced actor who won a worshipful global following as Mr. Spock, the resolutely logical human-alien first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the television and movie juggernaut “Star Trek,” died on Friday morning at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He was 83.
His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Not that it was really possible after the whole exterminatus thing, but now the Romulans and Vulcans will never reunite in peace and prosperity.

RIP, great actor and seemingly great human being.

At least Nimoy avoided Orson Welle's fate and a voice acting gig in a shitty Transformers movie wasn't his last acting credit.

a shitty Transformers movie.

I wouldn't wanna die right after doing a JJ Abrams movie either, though.

Clearly Steve preferred The Return of Optimus Prime to The Motion Picture.
-
was he going to be in the third one?

Conversely Nimoy was a voice actor in Kingdom Hearts. :-\

He seemed so vibrant, even in his most recent roles. So sad.

RIP
He seemed like a genuinely wonderful guy.

Obama's statement was nice
Long before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy. Leonard was a lifelong lover of the arts and humanities, a supporter of the sciences, generous with his talent and his time. And of course, Leonard was Spock. Cool, logical, big-eared and level-headed, the center of Star Trek’s optimistic, inclusive vision of humanity’s future.
I loved Spock.
In 2007, I had the chance to meet Leonard in person. It was only logical to greet him with the Vulcan salute, the universal sign for “Live long and prosper.” And after 83 years on this planet – and on his visits to many others – it’s clear Leonard Nimoy did just that. Michelle and I join his family, friends, and countless fans who miss him so dearly today.

I think you can trace a good deal of modern culture to that character he played. He is probably the first nerd hero in modern pop-culture that I remember coming across.

It's sad just cause he brought to life such a memorable character, and was by far the best and only consistently great part of the original series. I'd think Shatner is probably just a little bit insecure about Nimoy's death being a bigger deal than his will be as he was super jealous about how much fans loved him when the show was on, probably due to Spock having much better lines and humor.
At least Nimoy had a full life and went in as happy and dignified way as we can all hope.

Unfortunately this isn't on YouTube anymore.
The entire runtime of the film is taken up by Shatner's and Nimoy's conversation.[6] The film concludes with Nimoy putting his arm around Shatner's shoulder and saying, "You're my best friend."

I'll be equally sad when Shatner goes. They both are legends. They both were big parts of my childhood. And they both were huge parts of pop culture. And in real life they actually seemed to embody their characters. Shatner is a bit of a pompous ass but that seems perfect for the man who played Kirk. And Nimoy seemed stoic and scientific like Spock. It's nice when our pop heroes seem to line up with the characters they played in such a linear fashion.
