Text based MUDs - Circle mostly. About 4 years of MUDs on a 14.4 and 56k improved my speed typing by a gajillion cause I was constantly buffering commands haha.
Aside from that I've tried:
Guild Wars
EVE Online
Everquest
Asheron's Call
Asheron's Call 2
Dark Age of Camelot.
I will say out of all of the graphical MUDs WoW and Dark Age of Camelot were my two favorites. Until I got into WoW I played DAoC a LOT, and actually got Fragammemnon from GAF hooked on it to dangerous levels. Still feel a bit bad about that. I mean a casual player creating a MONSTER. Lol. He was good at what he did tho.
World of Warcraft basically borrowed every good idea EXCEPT the static battlefield from Dark Age of Camelot and added a lot of their own elements to basically smooth over a lot of glaring issues with DAoC. I'd also like to give a nod to the amount of content added to WoW before even one expansion pack came out. Their regular schedule server work helps too. People go WHY SO MANY PATCHES BLIZZARD? I'd have to chalk it up to the MASSIVE LOADS OF FREE CONTENT.
Look at it this way. DAoC was basically Everquest with the good ideas and framework borrowed, but with a bunch of Fixes unique to DAoC. Then WoW comes and and basically copies all the good ideas..well you get the idea.
Point being AT ONE TIME, Everquest was a 'good' game, but once something better comes out its silly to cling to it. If something better than WoW comes along ill jump to it, but Guild Wars is not it. its not even an MMORPG really. In fact, I put it on that list with reservations. It is as much an MMORPG as Diablo II or Phantasy Star Online.

I imped (developed) on a Circle MUD for about three years and learned a new loathing for the players.
I've played WoW, DAoC, AC, and AC2. Oh, and Fagnarok for about five minutes. DAoC was fun, except for the incredible downtime, and WoW uber alles. AC and AC2 were crap.

Whats wrong with WoW? Its not that hard to control yourself, seriously. I do about 10 hours a week, most of that on the weekend.
I dunno I just get an ick feeling if I play a game for more than 2-3 hours in a row these days. I always have to keep my days pretty variety PACKED. Then again I coulda just worn myself out with my Text MUD binges in high school.

Problem is at a certain point to get anything good you need to spend time in game, and you get sucked into doing runs, to hopefully get the drop you need, and hopefully roll for it.
I spent more time planning a run, then getting in and have people drop or other shit and then not getting the thing I needed, got very tiresome.

Once you hit 60 there isnt anything besides raids and pvp.

DaoC and WoW.
Both are boring as fuck, but DaoC woulda been tight back in the day if you could start off at level 45 or 50 or sumfin.
