Thats like season 3/4? I think I stopped watching somewhere there too.

I loved the single case episodes, didnt care much for the overarching plot they shoehorned in.

I think it's season 5 when it just got stupid. Right around the time they moved from Vancouver to LA I think?

Any series they do now is going to have to completely handwave the end of the previous series.  Not a great place to start.

The series ended on confirming absolutely that the alien invasion / conquering of Earth was going to happen at the end of the Mayan Calendar.  Maybe he hoped to do a big budget alien invasion movie but that never happened.

I mean, I guess they could go with, "Oh that?  Yeah, Mulder and Scully totally stopped that, it was epic, you should have been there.  Now let's go investigate a werewolf in Milwaukee."

But that's like, kind of frustrating.

Agreed. Which is something I very rarely do with Jay. Shocking.

s4 was the first kinda rocky season but s5 was the first one where I hit episodes I just couldn't really fuck with. Most of everything s6 onwards can be painful to get through.

X files is going for that nostalgia dollar though, Im sure it will be watched by millions.

Supernatural is pretty damn popular and it uses the same formula.

And Fringe, although it had plenty of "big story" stuff, too.

The sequel should just be Mulder and Scully retired and living in an apartment in Manhattan and dealing with wacky neighbors and hilarious hijinks.

I watched Xfiles from time to time as a kid but I never consistently. I might have to give it a shot one of these days since it'd be p much all new and I need a long series to feast upon.

I'm okay with them jettisoning much of the serialized story, hell the last movie did anyway.

building off the foundation of I Want to Believe is actually an excellent start, as I thought that threaded the needle rather well between a monster-of-the-week story and character building for Mulder and Scully.  Hell, it was a better series finale then the actual series finale.

If it's set up as a 10-13 episode serial it could be killer. I don't trust Chris Carter to not lose the plot otherwise.

Of course the bigger story would still need to be woven between 8-9 MotW stories, which should be doable.

People whine about the monster of the week episodes but they really erode your suspension of disbelief for the money shot episodes.

They demonstrate (albeit without subtlety)  how desperate the Syndicate is to stop the inevitable too.

Hardest thing to buy in this day and age is how Mulder at least didn't just die and get buried under a parking lot. In the era of things like bullshit detainment for decades, fugitive hackers etc I don't know why the syndicate didn't just say fuck it and bury everyone involved at the FBI.

The X-Files' lineage is pretty strongly tied to Twin Peaks. There would not have been the former without the latter.

Yes, the last two seasons were essentially all major story arc focused, but season 1 was almost directly an X-Files show.

I never finished the series, but wasn't it more or less given that Mulder was untouchable for some reason?

It's also alluded to that killing him will make him a martyr and that eroding his credibility is a much more effective way of handling him.

When shit goes bad for the Syndicate in "Anasazi" there's no qualms about trying to kill Scully and Mulder though. ???

Mulder and Scully come back from so many nigh fatal injuries, and spend so many episode ends in hospital beds convalescing that death itself really shouldn't be a big issue for them or any other X-Files characters. They all have Wolverine's healing factor. That's not even an exaggeration for the late series 'super soldier' characters, like when Adam Baldwin got effing decapitated(!) and came back.

or when Mulder...

had a broken femur and didn't even limp later on, or had both his lungs eaten up by insects from the inside and was basically fine by the end of the episode, or when he nearly died of old age...

time has made the mythology/serialized/conspiracy stuff seem much worse then it did at the time, back then it was acceptable to have a half-formed mishmash of nefarious/mysterious shit and call it a day. Fortunetly that really makes up only about 15% of the show, most of the time its the best science fiction-cop show ever made.

I actually think that stuff isn't as bad as people make it out to be. I rewatched it recently, and the last few seasons do drag a bit, and the conspiracy stuff is kind of a slog, but it isn't nearly as awful as I expected it to be.
