Title: Do any of you homos practice martial arts?
Post by: Rman on April 19, 2015, 09:46:58 PM
I'm thinking of doing Brazilian JuJitsu since classes are pretty easily to find everywhere these days.

I did Tae Kwon Do as a kid and it was pretty fun.

i did from age 11 to 30, but stopped when i had a kid because lol life. did isshin-ryu and goju-ryu (both okinawan styles, with isshin-ryn combining goju-ryu and shorin-ryu forms plus a few stylistic changes of its own), and some police/military knife training while in college. it was good for me as a spergbrat to help me learn to focus and control responses; later in life, it was fun testosterone socialization. i miss it and am planning to join a local school this summer.

I had a red belt in taekwondo. My instructor used to force all the male kids to do half naked pushups while he hosed us down. It's the only thing I remember.

Holy shit, we have really similar histories. I started at 11 as well, I’ve studied several styles including Goju-ryu and Shorinji-ryu, and largely grateful to it for improving my focus and self-control. Right now i’m studying a variant on Motobu-ryu, another Okinawa style called Daidou-bujutsu (大道武術). Next time we get beer together, let’s do naihanchi together and embarrass The Vestal.

:-*
I also had to take a break when my son was born. I was out of it for four or five years, and then re-joined when my son could practice. It’s been another five years since then, and I am really enjoying the practice with this group, learning weapons, which were never a focus at any previous dojo.

BJJ is the world’s gayest sport. It should be TheBore’s official pastime.

Martial arts, more like martial my ass; waste your money and time for a fighting style that wouldn't even help you in a sandbox with kindergarden kids, brehs

Where I grew up you don't get awarded by belts but have to dodge them when a elder relative of yours tries to attack you, breh. Better switch that TV channel before Nana shows you who bossin. Running away from angry old people helped with cardio, makes you able to stand in the ring for longer. Playing Ninja Gaiden on master ninja difficulty helped me to develop the hands structures of a 30 year old man while being 14; while everybody was munchin their high-sugar sandwiches during breaks at school, I crushed walnuts and stayed fit. just looking at my hands right now gives me shivers tbh. you could glue me on front of a small car and let it drive against a truck and I swear you these two motherfuckers would hit that fucking truck so hard it would turn into a transformer, seriously. not even jet fuel could get on the level of heat that i bring into the ring, breh

That was all the training I needed.

Been doing Judo for years, lately more as a way to keep my dumb lazy ass in shape more than anything else. Got into BJJ two years ago but that shit is expensive, brehs. I'd pay like 2-3x more than my judo class to go to a pack-assed class full of scrubs and fake tough guys.

Would actually recommend starting with Judo before getting into BJJ if you are trying to get competitive at the sport. Not only is it cheaper, if the class teaches ne-waza you'll have a good foundation to start BJJ with and have a wayyyy better standing game than anybody there.

While we're here can you describe how the introductory curriculum of judo goes? I'm assuming you don't just go right into throwing?

Well, kinda -- normally they start you off doing falls and rolls for the first 2-3 weeks. From what I understand, doing falls in judo is a lot different from doing falls from different martial arts, there's a lot of emphasis on protecting the head, and people from differing disciplines often fail at this stage because they're used to falling a different way. Then they get you into understanding the concepts of Kuzushi -- learning how to break peoples' posture with simple exercises, as well as learning how to defend your own posture.

After getting comfortable with falling, depending on the school they'd either start you off doing some dumb hand takedowns that aren't really useful, or the basic hip throws that you'll be using for years like the harai goshi or o goshi. Some schools may even introduce the constriction techniques at this point (i.e., how to get into a choke after doing a throw).

Others, like ours, like to shake it up every now and then and introduce karate punches/kicks/strikes which I thoroughly dislike. Yeah, they do help with learning how to position your body and distribute weight but the Karate shit just bores me. I just want to throw around and hug dudes, damn  :snoop

I used to do Escrima in high school/college, not really interested in anything strike-related anymore  :P Old habits die hard.

Staff, sai, sickle, nuuchiku, yamanagi (there’s a different name for this sword, but I’ve forgotten it; it’s a scimitar-like Okinawan/Chinese sword), spear, and oar.

I’m a big wood handler.

BJJ is the new hotness due to the popularity of MMA, so that makes it pricey right now.

Thanks for the tip on Judo, though. I might look into that instead if its cheaper.

i started with sai, but sucked, and switched to bo, which i was oddly good at (well, at least forms-wise). won a couple regional kata competitions. i'm kinda incompetent at knife-work, but i stuck with it long enough to at least develop a solid albeit unflashy practical technique. i'd be terrible at balisong.

plus the sweaty locker room wrestling with a muscular nubile fellow in the throes of adolescence, both curious and threatened in equal measure. they strain against each other, locked in a tension that is more embrace than struggle, each exploring the other's physicality through touch, and scent, and taste, with the heady wine of testosterone rich in their teenaged veins...
