Title: Half way through the year, what did you finish so far?
Post by: Cerveza mas fina on May 21, 2015, 06:29:56 AM
For me it's looking like this.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss 8/10, good game besides the Vita gimmicks
Tearaway 9/10, very charming platfomer, don't see the PS4 version being this nice due to lack of feautures
Steamworld Dig 7/10, nice little romp, bit simple but fun
Gravity Rush, 5/10, good idea, interesting world, bad controls and boring gameplay
The Order 1886, 8/10, great atmosphere and setting, cool low key story, good gunplay, just too short
Killzone Mercenaries, 8/10, only killzone I ever liked, nice old school shooter
Bloodborne, 9/10, more accessible and less obtuse Souls game, pretty much my GOTY so far
Hotline Miami 2, 7.5/10, not as hot as Hotline Miami 2, soundtrack is tits though
Monument Valley, 8/10, nice little puzzler, doesn't overstay it's welcome
Resident Evil Revelations 2 EP1, 7/10, it's simple but fun, horde mode is where I'd spent hours if I was into that type of thing
Never Alone, 5/10, bad controls, kind of boring, but pretty and nice idea
Last of Us: Left Behind, 9/10, first time playing TLOU since 2013 and it's only gotten better, some of the best if not best storytelling in a game

5-13 - Dex  (PC) - Cool 2D RPG, feels like it took the city section of Flashback and heavily expanded it
4-21 - Atelier Shallie  (PS3) - You craft, you moe
4-10 - Pillars of Eternity  (PC) - Best RPG in many years
2-18 - Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;birth1  (PC) - Not amazing by any measure, but a fun JRPG if you want something that doesn't take itself seriously at all
1-25 - HuniePop  (PC) - Match 3 with nekid ladies
1-12 - Loren The Amazon Princess  (PC) - Visual novel with minor RPG elements, not particularly good
1-05 - Dragon Age: inquisition  (PC) - Lots of fetch quests in here, but I still enjoyed it
1-03 - Atelier Rorona Plus  (PS3) - Not as good as later Atelier games, but you might as well play it if you enjoy this kind of thing

None, haven't bought a non-mobile game all year. Unless you count replays [Grim Fandango, Chrono Cross]

I've played a few mobile titles but those arent videogames so they dont count

Funnest game for me is Alto's Adventure so far. It's on mobile and really fun. You play for score, requires a bit of skill. Ys 1 is a fun RPG. Final Fantasy Record Keeper is a fun nostalgia inducing time waster.

This year have been replaying old favorites, though. Grim Fandango Remastered was pretty excellent as usual. Liked the new visuals. Chrono Cross and Xenogears are great.

Oh, I forgot I bought Pokemon X. It is fun.

I've started a lot more than I've finished, really.

Finished:
Feb 10: Grim Fandango Remastered (PS4)

I'd never managed to play this gem before, and any previous attempts at it led to the game not running on whatever computer I had at the time. I did have to use a guide here and there, but I'm glad I finally got to play it. Laughed a lot cause of the genuinely funny writing, appreciated all the hispanic themes present (cause there's a severe lack of them from games in general).

Feb 16: Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed (PS4)

 :uguu  :expert :uguu

Had a lot fun with it, tho playing on the harder difficulties was a bit of a pain. I was told by a friend who worked publishing the game that Easy mode is the most fun, and she was right. PS4 version comes with all the DLC from the PS3Vita versions and has way better load times, so that's a plus.

Mar 14: Valiant Hearts: The Great War (PS4)

Gud game. Probably the freshest thing Ubisoft has published in a while, shame that there won't be another cause the director (Yoan Fanise) left Ubi.

Mar 15: The Binding of Isaac Rebirth (PS4)

I'd obviously beaten this before, but I finally dusted this off and got Real Platinum God from getting the remaining items left. Bring on the expansion!

Mar 29: Final Fantasy Type-0 HD (PS4)

Liked this a lot. Was told that this is a much improved version over the original, since it has combat adjustments and lets you skip all the garbo RTS missions (which I didn't mind doing once, but would be a pain on replays). Cinque is da best girl.

April 19: Bloodborne (PS4)

Tied for my favorite souls game along with Demon's  Souls. Does a lot of things that I like better than the Dark series, including the atmosphere surrounding the world. Still need to do chalice dungeons.

May 05: Final Fantasy II (PS1)

Part of the FF playthrough I'm doing with SpeedStats, tho I hadn't beaten this before so it counts. Def rose in my personal "best FF" ranks once I had my misconceptions about it shoved aside and properly learned how to play it. Would have been mindblowing to see this on an NES way back when.

May 15: Final Fantasy III (Famicom)

Same as above. Also liked it a lot, tho it has some awful low points (anything involving mini) and I hated how its possible to go into World of Darkness with 0% chance of beating the game.

Japan has been super lewd since 1990.  :shh

Started:
inFamous First Light (PS4)
Apotheon (PS4)
Transistor (PS4)
CounterSpy (PS4)
Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus (Vita)
Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 (Vita)
Oddworld: New and Tasty (PS4)
Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines (Vita)
Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry (PS4)
htoL#NiQ -The Firefly Diary- (Vita)

The reason why I haven't played as much shit this year:

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (PS4)
Final Fantasy Record Keeper (Android)

Resident Evil Revelations 2 - it's ugly as shit but I had fun, first RE game I ever finished

Wolfenstein The Old Blood - I don't know why I thought I'd like this when I disliked New Order

finally played through all the OG Borderlands DLC -  Dr. Ned is fun and colorful, General Knoxx is tedious because there is no fast travel so when you get to missions at the end you have to drive the entire length of the game over and over again, Claptrap Robot Revolution is the best, funny and just long enough

BL2 and all DLC solo for the second time (used Krieg this time) - still a top 5 game for me, so much better than the first game, Krieg is fucking hilarious

gave Last of Us another shot and finished it, had a decent time with it this go around, it's no world-beater but the acting and writing are good enough to sit through

Nothing, apparently. Not even MH4U (got completely sidetracked by a return trip to ACNL.)

I did replay Super Mario World a few weeks ago if that counts. Otherwise I've been absorbed by the MK8 DLC.

Gundam Breaker 2

Infamous Second Son
Final Fantasy Type-0 HD

I think that's it.

Tropical Freeze - Fucking awesome
Kirby Rainbow Curse - Massive disappointment
Captain Toad - $15 Eshop title sold for $40
Mario Galaxy 2 - Fun level pack.  Galaxy 1 was better
DKC Returns - Good.  Tropical Freeze was better.

Link Between Worlds - 2 ez
Shin Megami Tensei 4 - Good, but nowhere as good as SJ and Nocturne
Etrian Odyssey 4 - Surprisingly great

MGS Ground Zeroes - Much better than I had anticipated
Valkyria Chronicles - Really good
Pillars of Eternity - Really great
Axiom Verge - Pretty good until the final boss which is a LOAD OF FUCKING HORSESHIT
Grow Home - Fun and short little experimental game

That's all I can remember off the top of my head.  I've also played a bunch of other games you can't beat like Mario Kart, Dota and Cities Skylines, but they don't count.

Best to worst:
Dodonpachi Daioujou - 10/10 - 2-ALLed this twice with A-EX and spent some time working on a B-EX clear. Perfect game.
Ninja Gaiden II - 10/10 - Don't know if this even counts, but I spent some time improving my survival mode scores. Counterstopped my total karma for mission mode at 99.9m.
Earth Defense Force 4.1 - 9/10 - Best game in the series.
The Adventure of Little Ralph - 9/10 - Pretty amazing on first impression.
Bloodborne - 9/10 - Feels a little shallow in comparison to previous Souls games, but it's still great. I didn't like the lack of weapons, streamlined character building, changes to the multiplayer, or the chalice dungeons. Hopefully the DLC beefs it up.
Castlevania Chronicles - 8.5/10 - The X68000 version is better, but this is still a port of arguably the best Castlevania game. I think I like Rondo a tiny bit more, though.
Okami HD - 8/10 - It's Zelda if Zelda games had good combat, an enjoyable story, beautiful art and graphics, and worthwhile awards for exploration.
Sunset Overdrive - 8/10 - Best game in this subgenre that I've played so far. Great art and graphics, great traversal mechanics, fun combat with lots of different weapons, and I even enjoyed the multiplayer co-op missions.
The Last of Us Remastered - 7.5/10 - Pretty much everything about it was either good or really good. Multiplayer was okay too, but it's kinda ruined by the Call of Duty-esque unlockable grind.
Shatterhand - 7.5/10 - The controls in this game aggravated me while playing it, but I think there was a problem with my controller. I probably would have liked it more if my character moved left every time I pressed it. Otherwise it was really good.
Final Fantasy Type-0 - 7/10 - Good combat & a likable cast of characters.
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition - 7/10 - Uncharted with better mechanics and a worse story.
Tomb Raider: Temple of Osiris - 7/10 - Guardian of Light rehashed.
Infamous Second Son - 6/10 - Totally unremarkable, but it was decent.
Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus - 5/10 - Combat is okay, but it's a musou game so it gets old fast. The story & characters made it entertaining.

Played and haven't completed
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate - Haven't started the G-rank quests yet. Best loot grinding game ever tho.
Dead or Alive 5 - Just haven't felt like learning a fighting game, but it seems good from what I've played.
Persona Q - Non-existent story, step on every tile in each dungeon to get some shitty reward, everything is weak to hama and mudo, bosses are damage sponges. Played through the first 3 or 4 worlds and dropped it because it was boring.
Trials Fusion - Finished most of the base game but haven't played much of the DLC.

Zelda Majora's Mask 3DS - it's majora's mask on 3ds
Bloodborne - really great game, only knock is how online is handled compared to its predecessors.
Axiom Verge - good game hurt by some bulletspongy enemies

at least those are what I bought in 2015.  I just finished Metro Last Light which is from 2013(?) so I'll say it's fun when it's fighting or sneaking past human enemies.  not so much against monsters.  standout in a mine cart segment in the middle.

We should leave this thread stickied and keep updating it...

Super Mario Land - Honestly my favorite out of the original GB Marios... like the level design and especially the music the best. Even if it doesn't look all that great graphically.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins - A stunning improvement in terms of graphics over the original, but the music sucked and the majority of the game was a cakewalk with bland level design (even if the ideas for levels - a giant Lego Mario, a pumpkin haunted land, outer space - are much cooler than most Marios) up until the awesome and really challenging final boss.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 - Pretty easy game with better level design than 2, but the music is horrible and Wario always felt a bit too sluggish to control as compared to Mario. Need to do a bit of grinding if you want to see the best ending, which sucks.

Suikoden Tactics - The graphics look like an N64 game, the story is silly as hell (cannons that turn people into fish men, wtf), but the elemental tile system separates this from your typical TO/FFT esque SRPG. The battles are long, draining, and challenging, with constant enemy reinforcements. But I don't like how there's permadeath for all of the optional characters. Still, I enjoyed this one more than 3 and MUCH more than 4, although as far as SRPG spinoffs go it ranks below both FFT and Wild Arms XF.

Emerald Dragon (SNES) - A pretty decent SNES RPG with a unique concept (dragon changing into a human to go to the world of humans to protect a girl he loves), an Ultima 3-ish battle system, decent production values (some full-screen anime portraits and some VA) and unfortunately WAY too many battles.

Faxanadu - Never beat this one back in the day but I finally did. Overall a pretty decent NES title, with catchy music and a big world to explore... but its got some frustrating enemy placements (like one enemy who attacks you as you slowly climb up a certain ladder, knocking you off, almost impossible to avoid), and some issues with backtracking if you're not precognitive (or not using a guide) and don't know what keys you might need to open up a door later in the level.

Wild Arms: Alter Code F - Ehhh, my least favorite of the WA series so far. An unnecessary remake of the original game, with a drastically simplified inventory system, and remixed tunes that aren't as good. It has a few additions over the original, like a ton of optional content (a few bonus dungeons, extra bosses, seed growing minigame, and the addicting-as-hell Puzzle Boxes), and several new party members. I'd stick with the original.

Terranigma - Beat it a while ago, didn't remember much about it, but came by a repro cart recently. Lovely game, I love helping to develop the world by reviving the continents, the flora and fauna, and then lead humanity into a golden age by encouraging trade between civilizations... High-concept game which also has some great action RPG mechanics. Some bosses are a bit of a slog though and require grinding.

Axiom Verge - Although it's a blatant Metroid copy, it still features a ton of unexpected twists and surprises. It's a game for the kinds of people who will play NES games even as they slowly start to glitch. A few of the bosses were bullet sponges with repetitive patterns, the only mar on an otherwise wonderful game.

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy (unlocked all songs, all songs cleared with at least an S on Normal) - A fun rhythm game but pretty much obsolete thanks to...

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy Curtain Call (unlocked all songs, all songs cleared with at least an S on Normal) - An insane amount of content providing for a ton of nostalgia. Still hate the character designs though.

Adventures of Lolo - Fun puzzler that I think I beat as a kid but felt I should replay. Made it through the whole game on a Sunday afternoon. Still need to get 2 and attempt to beat 3... the 3rd one is a feat I was never able to accomplish as a kid.

Rescue Rangers 2 - Great game but feels a bit like a re-tread. First one I think I prefer due to nostalgia... but still this was one of my holy grails for collecting and I'm glad I got to play it.

Gravity Rush (still need to do the DLC) - Frustrating camera and controls at some points, and a few annoying parts (like the battle with the hydra that made me give up on this game for a while before I discovered the trick)... but man is the art style stunning. Like a cross between anime and French bandes dessinees. Makes great use of the Vita and looks gorgeous on that system's screen.

Forgot a few:

Threads of Fate - charming as hell, with some great graphics for the era. Loved Mint's character in particular. Some touchy platforming elements and strange hit detection though.

FF15 Episode Duscae - still a work in progress, but I'd have definitely preferred a more traditional menu-based system. Love the setting though, the route-66 meets far-out fantasy of the demo is so unique.

Very close to the end of Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Captain Toad, Mega Man Legends, and I made it to the end guy of Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse but I died last time I tried. Will hopefully beat all those soon but since I have a little bit of time before the big crunch at work, I'm gonna start and hopefully make headway into Type-0.

Samurai Warriors 4 (PS4) - 8.5/10 - A great game in a tight package.  Will be getting SW4-II later this year for sure.
Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires (PS4) - 8/10 - Haven't played an Empires game since SW2 Empires almost a decade ago and it was fun to get back into it.  DW8E is a very good game and I hope DLC content comes out for it too sometime.  It's a game worth revisiting later down the line.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (PS4) - 6.5/10 - A decent game but the Borderlands formula has been wrung dry at this point.  The moon physics didn't really add much to the game and it felt like a holdover for Borderlands 3, which it is.  I'm hoping Gearbox has some new ideas for the IP or else I may skip #3.
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse (Wii U) - 5.5/10 - The game is pretty boring and I never quite got the hang of the controls.  Felt like it should have been on the 3DS instead.  Part of me wonders if it was but due to the Sahara-like conditions of the Wii U software lineup that Nintendo decided to move it to the Wii U instead.

Currently playing:

Borderlands 2 (PS4) - This game is better than the Presequel.  Mechromancer is basically easy mode with the Deathtrap being the easy button.

On Deck:

Final Fantasy Type 0 (PS4)
Final Fantasy X/X-2 Remaster (PS4)
Bladestorm Nightmare (PS4)

Hope To Get To It Sometime In 2015:

Toukiden Kiwami (PS4)
Mario Kart 8 DLC (Wii U)
Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U)
Bayonetta 1 and 2 (Wii U)

LOL, yeah right:

Pikmin 3 (Wii U)
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Wii U)

I've posted about some of these in the What are you playing thread but here we go:

Shovel Knight  - Some kind of mutant 2D Mario/classic Megaman union and it is fucking amazing. Controls are super smooth and just getting around in this game feels rewarding. 5/5
Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition - This was a replay since I hadn't touched the game in a while. Still fun as fuck though the RPG elements  took a noticeable hit due to the focus on action. 4/5
Gitaroo Man - One of my favorite rhythm games ever. I love the wide range of music genres present and the very japanese/quirky art style. 5/5
The 3rd Birthday -  Solid mix of action and rpg systems coupled with an awful story (until the last third of the game which is when I actually started to enjoy it). Will be replaying later down the line so I can play as meido-Aya  :expert. 4/5
Final Fantasy III - Looking back, the only reason I played and actually finished this was because I liked grinding and there's plenty of that in this game if you so choose. It was a great game to play while listening to podcasts. 2/5
Metroid Fusion - Everything about this game is cool as fuck. The scenario,  mechanics, music and art. Just excellent. 5/5
Chrono Trigger - Excels in making you feel like you've gone on an amazing adventure, and that's something that few games seem to be able to pull off. 4/5
WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! - Cutting steak, picking your nose, being a monkey and hopping from tree to tree to grab some bananas, being a really bad barber, etc. are all things you get to experience in this game because why not? Pure fun. 4/5

I've actually never been into gaming more than now. Got this huge backlog and I'm very much enjoying making my way through it. Don't really care if gaming implodes in the next decade because there are so many games I've missed out on. I'd be playing more if I could but can't atm due to irl happenings.

Also, this thread is providing a lot of backlog material. Keep it up  8)

Dark Souls II: Good game that had some issues, while it didn't reach some of the heights of its predecessor it didn't hit some of the lows either.

Uncharted 2: Mostly an alright game. The final chapter was bad. Supernatural bullshit, obnoxious bullet-sponge enemies coming out of the woodwork, and a terrible final boss fight capped with a hilarious "we're not so different" monologue from Naughty Dog's war criminal villain.

Pillars of Eternity: Alright game. The story wasn't well done, some of the backer stuff detracted from the game, and the bloated writing and excessive trash mobs made for a ponderous experience at times. It should be a good base for future expansions or sequels though.

Shadowrun Returns: Dead Man's Switch 3.5/4
Gundam  Breaker 2 3/4
Gundam Extreme Vs Full Boost 3.5/4
Far Cry 4 3.5/4
Bayonetta 2 3/4
The Banner Saga Episode 1 3/4
Hexcells Infinite 3/4
Tales of Zestiria 2.5/4
Abyss Odyssey 1.5/4
Zero no Kiseki Evo 3.5/4
Infamous: First Light 2/4
Metro 2033 3.5/4
Escape Goat 2 3/4
Hotline Miami 2 3/4

Gonna finish Xenoblade X tonight as well.  About 90 hours into that one after 3 weeks, though spent the last 10ish hours just grinding enemies over and over again to unlock the final story sidequests.  Game's gonna be a 3/4, 8/10 for me unless the ending blows me the fuck away.

I can and often do divide by zero, but only after I've made the necessary
preparations. (http://www.langston.com/Fun_People/1998/1998ALW.html)

It's been a while since I more or less shifted to mainly playing multiplayer games, but this year I don't think I've played/finished any non-multiplayer games.

Some multiplayer games I've been playing a lot this year: Last Blade 2, Tetris Attack, Tetris (PS3, EA), Tekken Tag 2 and Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown.

When you finish all of the currently available content you'll see a "coming up next on Record Keeper" screen. I guess that could be seen as finishing it. Or you could say that you've had enough once you reach the level cap. Or some other arbitrary goal. Of course, there will be new content a few days later.

I always set up arbitrary goals for completing games. Most times it is reaching the end credits, but with other games you just have to come up with your own objectives. The last game I beat, Twenty, is a puzzle game with no clear ending. I decided that reaching 20 would be a suitable objective and it turned out to be a good choice. It is moderately challenging and after that it is pretty pointless to continue unless you are trying to beat a friend's high score.

If you want to read my impressions about the games I have beaten then you can read the Backlog Blitz thread at GAF (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=963205) or the What have you been playing thread at WYL (http://discourse.wastingyourlife.co/t/what-are-yall-playing-ver-2-0/66/442).

Since my grades are much lower than I'd like, I don't allow myself to play any games while school is in session.  As such, I've only finished 2 games so far this year.

One of them was Divekick.  I bought it in a Steam sale.  I've never been into fighting games so I thought the simplicity here would hold my attention more than other games in the genre could.  It succeeded for the most part.  The differences between the characters gave the game a surprising amount of depth.  With only two buttons, things like angle of your kick, and your character's speed, size, and other small things unique to them became a lot more important.  Multiplayer matches seem like they'd involve just as much head games with your opponent in real life as it would footwork on screen.  I use the term "seem" since there was no one playing online by the time I got it and I didn't have anyone I could play against locally.

I liked the humor too and ended up finishing the game with nearly every character.  The game crashed every time I tried playing though it with Redacted. Maybe this was intentional?

The other game I finished this year was X-Com Enemy Unknown.  I've had this game for over a year now and put well over one hundred hours into it before I finally finished the story.  Only reason it took so long was because I sucked at playing it.  I don't think I've played this style of game before and now that I'm done with it I think it wasn't that hard of a game to be honest.  The time I finally beat it was actually my third try since I lost all my soldiers the first two times.  The concept of permadeath intrigued me so I never reloaded when my units died in battle.

I was a lot more cautious the third time around.  Learned to wait as long as possible between story missions to make sure my squad was ready before moving on.  By the end I had all the best equipment and a ton of money left over.

I liked how they kept the game challenging by giving you tougher enemies as you move up through default, laser, and eventually plasma equipment.  Every once in a while you'd still get easier missions where you can see just how much better your team has gotten.  They were also really good at relating the microlevel combat against aliens with base management,  space battles, and such. Excellent game probably one of my favorites of the previous generation.

I've also played Transistor and Papers, Please this year.  I started Transistor over my spring break which ended up being much busier than I expected.  I got less than two hours in and haven't touched it since.  I'll probably start over sometime before summer ends.  I've spend a little more time playing Papers, Please.  I've seen a few of the endings so far but I wouldn't really call that "finishing" the game since I haven't made it past day 8 yet.  Don't really have much to say about either game as of now.

Mega Man Legends - Really fun and charming game, with an interesting dichotomy of cutesy (the happy go lucky 90's style city you travel through), and downright creepy (large, repetitive, dark dungeons where enemies sneak up on you and no music other than ambient industrial sounds). It's clunky as any early 3D game tends to be but I really enjoyed my time with it.

Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse - fun, slow and methodical platformer. Not the longest or the most challenging game, but it still looks nice for the time and has decent level design. Picks up in difficulty towards the middle of stage 4.

So the year is almost over and I finished a few more games

The Witcher 3; probably game of the generation so far and my fav rpg is a a decade 9/10

Wolfenstein New Order: great fun old school shootbang, juwt how they should be 8/10

Shovel Knight: old school retro platformer, great difficulty and design 8/10

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter: good idea, bad gameplay 5/10

Hearthstone (lol, just got a golden druid): addicting, too much rng and aggro 8/10

Metal Gear Solid - Ground Zeroes - after playing so much MGS5, this game just flew by. People were complaining how it took 3 hours to beat the main mission, I think it took me longer to sit through the cutscenes/credits than actually play. I also completed the side ops and extra ops.

Quackshot Starring Donald Duck - a fun platformer with some slight nonlinear/Metroidvania elements and cool level design. Music is pretty shitty, though... sounding almost something like the way the teacher on Peanuts speaks.

Final Fantasy Type-0 - yeah, this is definitely a PSP game at its core. It was fun the first time through, I loved the characters and their different movesets. But a second playthrough to unlock optional story scenes and new missions was extremely repetitive and became a slog. Story also falls apart completely after a certain part. Something using similar conceits (a fast-paced ARPG with a large roster) but not hindered by being on a portable would be interesting.

in a few more days I'll finally be able to add MGS5 and Suikoden Tierkreis to this list.

ps4 impressions since I got one a month or two ago:

Destiny - fucking awesome but damn it needs some better in game communications. annoying issues but I keep going back to it every day

final fantasy 14 - yep this an mmo, but it's final fantasy so I'll keep playing

final fantasy type 0 - yep this is an hd port of the psp game, and nothing more lol. games alright.

super guacamelee - fantastic upgrade of a nearly flawless game. fucking amazing

metal gear ground zeroes / phantom pain - pretty great new gameplay adjustments, but man they stretch the content paper thin.

velocity 2x - game is fuck awesome but they coulda cut out/refined a lot of the content. still, there's obvious talent in this team and I'll keep an eye on whatever they're doing next

transistor - fun gameplay but SHUT UP. SHUT THE FUCK UP. I don't need a comment for every damn thing I do.

Haven't beaten as much this year as i usually do, due to -

PS4/PC - Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward. MMO, time-devouring and all that. Still the best representation of FF in the last generation.

Before that came out tho, I managed to beat:

PS4 - Grim Fandango Remastered. I'd wanted to play this for a long time cause of all the hispanic elements involved, but wasn't able to due to computer hardware incompatibilities in stuff. Was stoked to hear about this remastering and blew threw it shortly when it came out. One of the better point and clicks I've ever played.

PS4 - Akiba's Trip: Undead and Undressed: I was told before playing (by an XSEED employee no less) that I should play the game on Easy the first time through cause the combat mechanics on higher difficulties could be a load of doodoo, and they were right. The game is short enough (and designed around multiple runs) that I learned how to play on Easy, then used that to tackle the game on Normal and Hard mode. Not without its issues, such as being an obviously prettied up PS3 game with tons of loading zones, rather stiff animations and no cutscene skip ( :yuck) even if you can speed past them at like 3x the speed. Was fun to beat up zombies with a max level god destroying body pillow.

PS4 - Valiant Hearts: The Great War: Recommended by Speedstats and not at all what I expected based on previews. Learned a lot of stuff about WW1 from it and made me cri at the end.  :'(

PS4/Vita - Binding of Isaac Rebirth: Went out of my way to get Real Platinum God, which involves doing all the shit the game asks you do as The Lost, which is such a terrible character that goes against what makes Isaac fun. That dude aside, Rebirth blows the original out of the water and I'm really looking forward to Underbirth.

PS4 - FF Type-0 HD - Took long enough for us to get this! HD remaster of a PSP game, so the cracks at the seams are really blatant, but I enjoyed my time with even if the plot is kinda nonsense.

PS4 - Bloodborne: Tied for favorite Souls game alongside the first one. I really really like the focus on faster paced combat and getting rid of the defense focus from the earlier games. Excited to play the DLC and the eventual sequel.

PS1 - Final Fantasy II: Speedstats taught me how to play this game right and it rocketed through my own rankings for which FF games I like best. A shame that we'll never get a game like this again.

NES - Final Fantasy III: Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the atrocity that is FF3 DS.

PS4 - Dragonball Xenoverse: I won the world tournament announcer shades really early on and never took them off. Gud game, want the eventual sequel to improve stuff.

PS4 - J-STARS Victory VS+: Didn't actually beat it, but I unlocked all the characters and played it a lot with local friends. It's kind of a shame that there's no way to do the full 2 vs 2 battles outside of the Vita version, cause even 1 v 1 its pretty fun, if a bit unbalanced.

Vita - Persona 4 Dancing All Night: Prob the Persona 4 spin off I've had the most fun with. Great tunes, top notch story presentation, tons of song modifiers and lots of difficulty settings. Really solid as far as rhythm games go.

Since the last time I posted:

Suikoden Tierkreis - I came in with zero expectations whatsoever but it was a surprisingly decent game. In fact, I rate it over 3, 4 and Tactics! There were some decent dungeons, the parallel worlds story was cool, you still get a castle and 108 characters to recruit... Although the voiceactingwasreallybadbecausetheleadcharacterneverpausedforbreath, and the story was made for younger gamers (probably because it was on the DS). Graphics were lovely, beautiful prerendered graphics and good monster design, even if the chibi characters didn't look so hot. The adventure was pretty long, and actually had interesting, mazelike dungeons (unlike 3 and 4 which had terrible dungeon design). Combat was pretty easy and the castle didn't have as many interesting features as other Suikoden castles, like minigames or the hot springs. Still have to play Suikoden 5 and the 2 visual novel games for PS1 to complete my series playthrough. Oh yeah, and the PSP game whenever someone decides to fan translate it.

Metal Gear Solid 5 - Did all the missions and finished all side-ops. I spent about 100 hours to do that, in fact the game probably took me 2x as long as playing MGS1-4 total did. What else could be said that hasn't already? The actual stealth and infiltration gameplay is sublime and the best in the series. Everything surrounding that is shit though. Unnecessary open world with little to do. The Mother Base building, which might be interesting if it didn't have all IAP and timers integrated in it. FOB insurance (wtf?). And of course the lack of an interesting story or villains. Well, I probably should have played Peace Walker first since I didn't really get the big deal with Paz and XOF and Cipher. So that's up on the list.

Star Trader - Fun X68000 shmup by Falcom. Nice graphics, stunning music (Falcom + X68000, nuff said), though a bit easy. You get apparently unlimited continues, although it starts you back at the beginning of the level when you use one. And there's only one difficulty level... Took me 3 continues to win, though a 1cc doesn't seem as ridiculous as most shmups. The weird thing about this game is that powerups are pretty sparse. And the level length really varies. The first 2 levels make you feel like you're in for a long haul, then 3 is a bit shorter... 4 is the longest in the game, but 5 and especially 6 and 7, are real short. There's also some anime cutscenes interspersed  throughout, which use the 68000's hi res mode.

Wild Arms 5 - This was all I had left to beat for my Wild Arms series playthrough. It features the cool position-based HEX system from 4, with some adjustments to make things run smoother (like, every character can move and attack on the same turn, not just Raquel like in 4). It also brings back the World Map, in a 3D, behind the shoulder view. Camera also has full rotation... both of these things don't feel too refined, and I prefer the static camera of 4. Not to mention, the dungeons in 5 are a lot less interesting than other entries in the series in terms of both design (so many palette swapped interiors) and puzzles, where it's mostly shooting boxes and some basic push-block. Though, later in the game are some extremely tricky riddles I had to look up a FAQ for. Story had some decent concepts to it, it's basically a race war between humans and ex-humans who escaped the dying planet and then returned when they couldn't find another homeworld. Voice acting was pretty obnoxious, and the lead character Dean never shuts up.

Adventures of Lolo 2 - Finally finished all 4 of the pro levels! The final one, which I thought would be impossible, ended up taking me a bit less time than the first and 3rd. Then went and beat the final boss. A pretty fun follow up to the first game, a few of the later puzzles are quite dastardly, but it really feels like an 'expansion pack' and not a full fledged sequel like Lolo 3 does. I think that the levels in the Famicom and MSX Lolo games were split out to make Lolo 1 and 2 for America, which could be the reason.

Up next to finish - Xenoblade X, Project Mirai DX, Metroid 2, and Kirby: Rainbow Curse. Doubt any of these are getting done before the new year (Maybe Metroid).
