valve must have mountains of gameplay content that has been created for various projects but never released. I can't imagine what their office culture is like but it must be the easiest place in the world to work for.

Would have been nice for Valve to have had at least a hands-on with the Steam Link and/or the new controller.

I'm going to buy it either way but still.

Yeah, that's new X-com alright. First three minutes in and I'm like "yeah, there's no way this isn't coming to consoles." The movement seems the same as the last one. Just better keyboard/mouse controlling in the UI.

The only things that bothers me with XCOM2 is how much the whole cinematic moments and cut-ins are present, but that first mission looks like a tutorial... Generally the game is not at his finest in the CG either, less would be more there. The only good thing the remake brought there was the eerie bald dude.

Otherwise I like what I see. Enemies redesign, mechs still in, manual evac zone, carrying people. I like the futurist setting, a tad XCOM meets Syndicate, but it's maybe a bit bland. I suspect that may be because they brought back all procedural maps. The whole procedural thing is really what I am looking forward into, getting it right would mean that the game could have infinite replayability... If the strategy layer is fixed.

EDIT : The whole enemy pod activation seems to have been tinkered on as well, but it is hard to say with the demo.

I didn't stay in for the pep talk, did they mention anything about the Geoscape parts ?

XCUM : The real megaton which doesn't just rely on nostalgia.

I like the cutaways (wish you could skip through them though).

nah they didnt mention anything about the base/globe aspect.

I'm maybe speculating but I have the impression that the whole guerilla/resistance (and moving base ?) premise may be a way for Firaxis to adress some of the issues of the first game by inverting some of the controversial mechanics. In the demo mission, it's actually your squad that is in the fog of war and able to lay ambushes, for instance. I guess that at the strategic level you will be the one trying to make you way up against an all pervasive alien control of the globe rather than the contrary. Maybe something a la Syndicate with mission to gain territories ? Anyway, as I said, I just hope that we will have more of a free hand there instead of being railroaded through a campaign.
Title: Re: PC E3 2015 Megathread
Post by: Fragamemnon on June 16, 2015, 02:02:00 PM
Firaxis' isn't talking the strategy layer yet. All we know is bits and pieces.

Don't read in too much in that demo-a lot of the basic mechanics were adjusted for the sake of making something that could be shown off really quickly. Advent and aliens, for example, are not getting free moves on your dudes on the turn they arrive.

The big change is the way that missions aren't just bug hunts / sweep and clears. The missions are more objective based and tempt you with loot gathering, and knowing when the battlefield is getting too hot and you need to get the hell out. There might be "regular" sweep and clear missions once we get more info about the strategic layer (shooting down alien ships? raiding their convoys for supplies?) but even for those I expect that the designate LZ and extract mechanic, which is dependent on the aliens being able to reinforce past the breaking point for your team, will be on every mission.

Mission might not be nominally bug hunts but the same is true in XCOM EU and yet the game often ended up just forcing on you the extermination of enemy forces and even when it didn't the design funneled you there anyway. I believe it was in part because of the size of the maps, as evident in alien terror mission (with some really half-baked mechanics and victory conditions regarding civilians). The original game was like that too, but the higher number of missions, potential high mortality rate, size of the maps, ability to collect items (instead of "weapons fragments") created a real choice for carrying on or aborting. Overall I think EW didn't fix that problem, but the MELD objectives introduced some tactical variety. So I hope they will continue on this path.

Overall I think EW didn't fix that problem, but the MELD objectives introduced some tactical variety. So I hope they will continue on this path.

EU/EW's mission design was always sweep and kill. The only exceptions where variants of sweep and kill, with stuff like bomb disposal making sweep and kill harder or escorting a due while sweeping and killing.  It was this way because of the way that reinforcements were usually one-shot from the sky and generally very easy to kill as well as the way that the missions themselves had a terminal point of all the aliens being dead. The original game also had a MASSIVE penalty to fucking a mission up, so players would completely wipe instead of aborting because the cost of failure was too high.

Here the terminal point regardless of success of a mission is extraction, not elimination of all aliens, and that really opens things up. The other side of things is allowing for missions to not always be successful without murdering the player's campaign in the process, so players can leave a mission and avoid deaths (but also miss out on rewards) if they chose to do so.

Post by: VomKriege on June 16, 2015, 03:59:02 PM
I can see your point and I would welcome an objective based turn based tactical game (which seems to be what they are aiming for). It would also make more sense considering the force asymmetry that pulling out as soon as you reached your objective would be the most sensible option.

It is true that in the original, you sometimes had to stand your ground (alien terrors, mostly) no matter how bad things are going, but as I said, the size of the maps and also the size of your force pool and squads make it so that it was a tad different. In new XCOM, losing out two to three soldiers is pretty much already a catastrophic failure. The denser nature of the design leaves no real room for pondering on whether you shgould retire or not. I guess it was a conscious decision by Firaxis to streamline the game to crucial choices, but overall it made the game a bit dry and predictable the more you did the campaign.

The best case scenario would be for something like the Newfoundland mission to evolve organically from the game.

I was literally shaking with anger during that conference. Tears formed in my eyes and my fists were clenched. "Announce something," I shrieked at my computer. My mom knocked on my bedroom door and had to ask if I was ok. Then, they started showing me a bunch of losers playing with AMD components dressed in Christian metal tees  and I just turned it off. It was actually unbelievable.

Now, I'm 31 years old and this was, without a doubt, the worst conference I've ever seen in my life. It's clear that PC gaming is done forever. There is no recovering from a conference that bad. They'll talk about the Oculus Rift at next E3, but people will ignore it after remembering Lorde.

I love my PC and put my heart and soul into dedicating my gaming life to it. But now, I have nothing. I'm an empty shell.

np Eel, enjoy.

I really don't get the fetishism for medieval Europe. Taking the historical cultural, economic, and commerical low point and making it seem COOL AWESOME seems stupid. It's best left to Paradox games where at least you play the only people that had any fun in that era, the ruling elite.
