Title: SEGA FANS *blows steam out of nose*
Post by: Himu on July 08, 2015, 12:58:09 AM
http://www.siliconera.com/2015/07/07/sega-learned-about-making-quality-games-from-atlus-aim-to-regain-trust-from-players/

Quote
“As far as the Western market goes, we learned a lot from Atlus,” continues Satomi. “If we can make a title with proper quality, I believe there’s a good chance for it to do well even in the West for players that like to play Japanese games.”

Next, Famitsu asks what are they’re looking to focus on more when it comes to home console games.

“I’ve been talking to the employees about how we should start putting serious consideration into quality from this point on,” responds Satomi. “Especially in North America and Europe, where it’s always been more of a focus on schedules, I believe that if we can’t maintain quality, it would be better to not release anything at all.” Satomi continues, “We did our best to build a relationship of mutual trust with older fans of Sega, but looking back, there’ve been some titles that have partially betrayed that [trust] in the past 10 years.”
“Sega in the ‘90s was known for its ‘brand, but after that, we’ve lost trust, and we were left with nothing but ‘reputation. For this reason, we’d like to win back the customers’ trust, and become a ‘brand,’ once again.”
Famitsu asks if it’s safe to expect a high quality title to be released sometime in the second half of this year.

“Since we’re seriously considering quality, I can’t make that promise for the time being, but I believe we will announce something for home console at Tokyo Game Show,” says Satomi.

HNNNNNNG

Make me believe again, Sega!

I haven't bought a lot of their production recently but really the problem with Sega a few years ago had little to do with the actual quality of products (except maybe Sonic which really garnered a reputation for shoddy designs, and yeah it's kind of their flagship) as a developer or a publisher. My impression is that not unlike a lot of other major Japanese publisher, Sega has been hurt badly by the recess of arcades (the outlet for many of their household names) and the stagnating home market for consoles. If talent has bleed, I see it as a consequence of those rather than the cause. There's no more a lot of room to let their teams go wild on titles coming from the left field. I read a few times ago a paper that explained that mobile gaming already made more money for them than games on consoles and the physical sales don't amount for a lot in the end (6 millions discs in a year, IIRC, across all releases. For a company among the biggest in the business...).

PSO2 is never happening on our shores ever. There's an Eng version in SEA but calling its localization hot garbage is putting it generously. They renamed Forces to Wizards and it apparently only gets better from there. :lol Taiwan (iirc) has their own server as well. If you want in go here http://arks-layer.com/ and patch your brains out. Virtually everything important is translated including the story and they've even figured out how to inject a dll into the game that translates items without setting off stupid gameguard. Plenty of gaijins on Ship 2 (including me :-[), JOIN US.

I'm sure PSO2 is F2P :trash

I hear PSO2 is pretty banger. Gameplay looks fun and I don't even like PSO.

Titan Quest is great, but like, pretty much every other Diablo clone I've played is shit. Titan Quest was the only good one. Torchlight? :trash Path of Exile :trash It's really only Diablo or Titan Quest. :yeshrug

titan quest was better too

I need to give that another chance. It felt too Diablo in the beginning and I don't even think I got out of the first zone as a result. Also the aesthetic did nothing for me--not that Path of Exile is great in that regard either.

Nice to see another Japanese company finally waking up to the fact that there are plenty of westerners who appreciate their quality games. But considering who said this, I won't believe it until I see it...

That said, some of Sega's games they developed (Valkyria Chronicles, Sonic Generations, All Stars Racing Transformed, Binary Domain, the Yakuzas) and published (Resonance of Fate, Bayonetta, Vanquish) were damn good.
Title: Re: SEGA FANS *blows steam out of nose*
Post by: Human Snorenado on July 08, 2015, 06:42:57 PM
Ranged combat has always been "ok" and supposedly the new changes that are in beta right now really help melee, but anyone who plays the D3 engine and then the PoE engine and tries to claim that the PoE engine is better is fucking high and/or stupid. For a tiny NZ studio they've created a great game, but let's not kid ourselves here.

Letting the combat of a game where you just mouseclick repeatedly dictate your preferences seems to me rather missing the point. WRPGs are intravenous crunch hits and Diablo is megalol in that regard.

The sugar is in the animations and sounds. There's no denying that D3 just feels better in that regard. PoE only comes close when you're shattering a group of frozen enemies. Everything else relies entirely on the screenshake that accompanies critical attacks. PoE with Blizzard resources would be so amazing. :rejoice

You couldn't buy it on PS3 in the U.S. anyway.  It never came out here.  But yeah, they pulled it for 360 and PS3.  I was never that big on that version of the game since it's missing some of the music and prefer to play it on PC, PSP, or PS2.  I have the Japanese version for PS2 which got some slight improvements over the American version, since it came out later and Sumo Digital is awesome.

It apparently costs 50 bucks for pc disc.

Worth it.

Yup.  You can then install it and download a modified .EXE file so you don't need the disc to run it.  I picked up a copy of it a few years ago for like $19.99 before they stopped selling it everywhere.  I believe there's mods out there now that enhance the visuals, too.

Mario Kart being dog shit has absolutely nothing to do with Sega. We could use any other racing game comparison, whether it be Wipeout or anything else, and it'd still rule to be true.

LOL, Metacritic.

I had one of the PS2 versions :yuck but I gave it away with most of my gaming collection last year. :buddha:

PS2 Outrun 2006 was good stuff, brah.  Sumo can't do no wrong, breh.
:ufup

Sonic All Star Racing trashes Mario Kart.

This is true.

I have no problem with people having a preference for one series or another, but making a point of fact in a Sega thread to bring up a similar Nintendo franchise just to trash it reeks of the ever-present inferiority complex Sega fans have. :hitler

Also, to call MK "dog shit" with no qualifier is ignoring how mechanically-tight, highly-polished, and immediately-accessible the series is and why it's sold over 100 million copies. Such a statement is in fact ignoring reality.

If a racing game cannot be deduced to pure skill but due to sheer luck

again

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_43cq3DalZw

how is it not doo doo??!?! I have not played Mario Kart 8 but very, very often, Nintendo game reviews receive overly inflated review scores due to brand recognition, nostalgia, and pure Nintendo allegiance, so it's hard to take reviews of Mario Kart 8 seriously in any form. But the fact of the matter is that Mario Kart is a completely broken game that relies on weapons and raw luck more than actual skill.

If you're better than the competition, you will win 90%+ of your races. There's a nuance to the item system in Mario Kart that does require skill in order to maximize your odds of winning. The people playing MK8 online and racking up the scoreboard aren't doing it because they have a 1 in 12 shot of winning or whatever, it's cause they're good. And they know how to consistently beat other racers.

Lol this is absolutely false.

And even besides that, it's still a hell of a lot of fun to play. If a game is fun and has amazing production values, is it "shit" or "doo doo"? No. :yeshrug

Nah, the visual downgrade from Xblob 180 always bugged me. Game was still solid, but blech the visuals.

I'd just rather play something like F-Zero. :yeshrug I have no idea why Nintendo thinks the items in Mario Kart make it fun and Mario Kart has been topped numerous times over the years, whether it's Crash Team Racing or Sonic All Star Racing Transformed. Arcade gameplay has never been a Nintendo positive or strength, so I don't entirely blame them for the shoddy quality of the games, but for the love all that's holy you'd think they'd up their game at least on their franchise racing game. Maybe Mario Kart 8 will prove me wrong, but the more I played Mario Kart 7 the less of it I liked. It was also the first Mario Kart I owned since the original.

I have no idea why Nintendo thinks the items in Mario Kart make it fun and Mario Kart has been topped numerous times over the years, whether it's Crash Team Racing or Sonic All Star Racing Transformed.

Items in MK are fun for the majority of people, and they're one of the factors for why MK is still alive and kicking while F-Zero, Wipeout, CTR, and Sonic Racing are all dead.

Maybe Mario Kart 8 will prove me wrong, but the more I played Mario Kart 7 the less of it I liked. It was also the first Mario Kart I owned since the original.

Off the top of my head, MK8 has an item that can kill the Blue Shell (and you can get it while in first place), and you can't drag an item while holding another (which cuts down on the amount of queued red shells a racer can let fly.) I'm meh on the latter but both of them make for a slightly less hectic experience if you're a noob.

The item balance also seems a lot better to me in MK8, but I skipped 7 and so was coming from MK Wii where it might have been the worst of the series (it's also where that vid you're so eager to post is from.) The only really annoying item is the Lightning Bolt, which bewilderingly took a step back from MK Wii and can zap all other racers, not just the ones in front of you. Boneheaded item that needs to go or a severe retooling.

I don't know whether it'll be your cup of tea but it's certainly not dogshit for failing to appeal to your narrow sensibilities. :yeshrug

Wipeout has items doe. :hitler

I really liked Double Dash and don't mind the rubberband items. I don't think I'll ever understand the need to stamp out chance from games.

There's nothing wrong with items. All the games I have listened have items except maybe F-zero in the traditional sense. The problem is balance, and Mario Kart is poorly balanced.

Double Dash was very fun with four players. I don't really like any other mario kart game though, CTR is better than the early ones and Sonic all-star is better than the later ones.

I don't think it's completely fair calling Wipeout Mario Kart inspired. It certainly had inspiration from it in certain areas, but Wipeout is a game all about speed and skill. I'd take XL and 3 over any MK.

psygnosis put weapons in wipeout cus they were playing a lot of mario kart while making it. but yes, they aren't similar in any meaningful ways.

True. I never thought it was as bad as they are in MK, though.

There are far fewer weapons you have to eat ala blue shell, but wipeout also doesn't default to respawning when you blow up so taking shots is more meaningful than mario kart.

the quake hits all equally, blue shell is some petty "fuck you if you think you're winning" shit that gets thrown at whoever is in front.

Ultimately, Andy is right on one thing. All of those other series are dead. :( SSX, Jet Moto, Daytona, Outrun, Sega Rally, Virtua Racing, Hydro Thunder, Ridge Racer, Sled Storm, Wipeout. :(  Mario Kart really is the only game in town if you're an arcade racing fan these days. It's an utterly sad situation. There's Trackmania I guess.

Eh, the fact that they keep making mario kart games doesn't make the games more enjoyable. I'm fine with there not being any more wipeout games because the ones that are available are terrific. Same goes for other series as well, virtua fighter 5fs is a fine end for that series for instance.

Yeah, plus there's games you've missed out on. I highly suggest getting Initial D Extreme Stage for ps3. Yeah, it's in JP. It's Sega developed and excellent. Here's some gameplay of a night stage.

No, not even close. It runs the entire track and hits EVERYONE.

Blue Shell only hits the #1 placement.

mario kart used to be good but then they started designing the game for morons and 12 person races so you basically went from short, narrow levels to monstrous 8 way highways with no sense of speed. have fun playing games balanced around broken motion controls, nintards.

Nah, the visual downgrade from Xblob 180 always bugged me. Game was still solid, but blech the visuals.

No way, it looked great on PS2.  It looked good on every platform Sumo ported it to, including PSP.

Sonic Transformed.  Especially the PC version.   :pimp

Yeah, plus there's games you've missed out on. I highly suggest getting Initial D Extreme Stage for ps3. Yeah, it's in JP. It's Sega developed and excellent. Here's some gameplay of a night stage.

They still make these games in Japan, for arcades.  Several other drifting/racing games too.  And Namco continues to make their own Mario Kart arcade games.  No idea why none of this stuff never comes out on consoles.

Don't subject yourself to the Mario Kart ghetto.

That's a little too over-the-top.  Mario Kart 8 is good stuff.

But Sonic Transformed is still better.
