Title: Can You Swim?
Post by: Steve Contra on July 08, 2015, 01:56:03 PM
There was talk in another thread about swimming, and over the weekend I learned that 4 of my friends can't swim (WTF) so I'm putting this shit to a vote.  (No judgment zone btw although I'll be judging the fuck out of you if you can't)

I actually learned to swim in a huge irrigation run off ditch when I was a kid swimming with my cousins at a ranch my grandparents worked.
It was only later down the road that I realized we swam in nothing but pesticides.

:yeshrug

I can swim.

I learned to swim at a late age (15 or so IIRC) and I could swim pretty well for a few years, but as I haven't swum in like 15 years or so I doubt I could anymore.

Statistically I probably had a better chance of dying to drowning than cancer up to a certain age.
We'll see how it pans out. Like I said, least I can swim

It's absolutely important to learn how to swim but it's also important to recognize when someone is drowning (http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/family/2013/06/rescuing_drowning_children_how_to_know_when_someone_is_in_trouble_in_the.html?wpsrc=sh_all_dt_fb_top).

Quote
Of the approximately 750 children who will drown next year, about 375 of them will do so within 25 yards of a parent or other adult. According to the CDC, in 10 percent of those drownings, the adult will actually watch the child do it, having no idea it is happening.

The article is child-focused but this applies to adults as well. Drowning doesn't look like it does in TV shows and movies.

I'm a middle class black. I was raised in the burbs, bb. It's the kids that lived in cities that don't know how to swim usually, because there's not that many swimming centers available to them. The school I went to day care with had trips to teach us how to swim at the local public pool, which is like 5 minutes away. I learned at the tender age of 4 back in the 80's. My parents had no obligation to not let me learn how to swim when everyone else was learning. My mom recorded me swimming on VHS. I haven't swam in five years. I am going to buy a bikini later tonight. :rejoice

I probably should have joined swim teams back as a kid.
I probably would have been dope at it.

Swam a ton out in the ocean over in Mexico when on vacation.
It's so fucking nice just free swimming in the deep out there.

I personally find it difficult to not float.
Like I've gotten cramps out in the ocean and shit and you can manage fine with little movement so long as you're not panicked.
I can completely understand how dudes straight up drown tho, it's way too easy to take a mouth full of water and lose it in waves.

Yeah, started lifeguarding when I was 16 and did it every summer for years. Good job with cool coworkers I'm still friends with.

It was kind of stressful though, despite lifeguards looking like they're just chilling 98% of the time 8)

Another pool nearby had a kid drown in front of everyone unnoticed, like Andrex pointed out it's common.

I was fortunate because my oldest sister was a lifeguard so besides nepotism getting me my first job, she pushed for me to take swimming lessons growing up.

My family would also go to Maine a lot as a vacation spot so I was always swimming in murky ass lakes, cold ass oceans, etc.

I can stay afloat, but I wouldn't call myself a strong swimmer. Sometimes when I'm out on Lake Erie, I wonder if I had a boating accident if I could actually swim back to shore.

I made sure my kids had proper swim lessons when they were 4.  I wished that I did.

Swimming against currents and shit in the open or over long stretches even taking it real easy is hard as fuck.

yeah but not well.  I had a long stretch where I couldn't/wouldn't swim in deep water because of some near drowning instances, panic and all that, even antsy on boats.  after learning to calm down I can swim fine.

When I was 4 at a public pool, everybody else was swimming so I jumped in and proceeded to slowly sink until a friends dad jumped in with his clothes on and pulled me out. Then I went back in with water wings. It wasnt until I was like 9 that I learned how to swim.

I can't believe there's no non-swimmers here.

Yes.

Not great fitness levels though, so will get tired when swimming. Had to swim for quite a stretch earlier this year, to get into a cave and I was fucking dying at the end. Before we went into the water our guide was telling everyone except me and a couple of others that they had to wear life vests, we however where judged good enough swimmers. I think they were wrong, because in the end I had to resolve to lying on my back and taking it easy (and real slow) to get back to the boat. This Russian guy even asked me if I was ok, so must have looked like I was dying.  :shaq2

Are there any swimming classes for adults who already know how to swim? I'd like to improve some time and it seems like a good idea to improve beyond doing the stuff I learned as a kid. Problem is that I worry most adult lessons will be for people who don't know, and it would be rude to join up in a class like that already knowing how to do it.

When I worked at the Y, I would see adult swimmers with personal trainer types who would be teaching them different strokes. 1 on 1 type classes that aren't for beginners.

I don't think the Y ran it though, but it wouldn't hurt to inquire. Maybe call the local Red Cross? I do that when looking for CPR/lifeguard certification classes.

I'm a white person living in the suburbs on an island where you're never more than 15 min from a beach, of course I can. :P

Absolutely love swimming and especially waterparks.

Water parks are rad.
Fucking wave pools though.  That shit is like defcon 1 for lifeguards on weekends.

What happened? Someone die? >:(

Quote
The park's popularity went hand-in-hand with a reputation for poorly designed, unsafe rides; under-aged, undertrained, and often under-the-influence staff;[4] intoxicated, unprepared visitors; and a consequently poor safety record. At least six people are known to have died as a result of mishaps on rides at the original park. It was given nicknames such as "Traction Park",[4] "Accident Park", and "Class Action Park"[5] by doctors at nearby hospitals due to the number of severely injured park-goers they treated. Little action was taken by state regulators despite a history of repeat violations. In its later years, personal-injury lawsuits led to the closure of more and more rides and eventually the entire park.

Sounds like a good way to die as a kid while having fun the entire time.

You're exactly where I was when I wanted to get more into swimming.

At my Y there were groups for Beginners, Intermediate, Stroke Technique, and Masters. I started with Intermediate then moved into Stroke Technique. Hoping I can eventually go into Masters but I hear they do 18 laps in a row and that's still out of my reach right now.

Intermediate is really basic stuff, basically teaching how to do the different strokes and how you can use swimming to exercise. Stroke Technique was a big step up from that, with various lap drills and more of an emphasis on improving, well, technique.

I also saw quite a few 1 on 1 private lessons, from beginners to really advanced swimmers. In a semi-public pool you'll get the full spectrum of abilities. :)

Not swim well, but I can avoid drowning.

I think this is an important distinction. :lol

Was debating whether to go today or not but I'm glad I did.

4800 yards this week :whew

I know I won't be able to go as much next week tho. :gloomy Wish I was a morning person so my after-work socializing didn't interfere with this.

When I was young, my dad would often pass down knowledge from his grandmother, Ruth Greenidge, who emigrated from Barbados to Boston, about swimming in the sea: "Only fools and fish swim in the ocean." (http://www.cnn.com/2015/05/29/health/fit-nation-swim-fear/index.html)

Black people why :tocry

I had my kids learn at a community center that was in the poorest part of town. I knew one of the instructors there (who hipped me to the program) and I am cheap.

It was very surprising to me to see all the participants in the entry class that looked like me: White, middle class surburbanite looking to save a buck. This center even had forms that people (who qualified) could fill out and have their lessons for practically free. But maybe one or two kids looked like they may have came from the area.
