Hang out with country bumpkins or simply avoid social gatherings altogether.

That's when you become a philosophy major so you can debate with like-talented people.

The thing to remember with debating politics/ethics in person is you never get hung up on statistics. Why google and use tech to back your sources with stats when you have a perfectly good ass to pull out of wherever you are. It's not about being right, it's about throwing the weight of your moral superiority around in the face of overwhelming facts and opposition.

Or hey, why bother hearing criticism at all? Just shout the other guy down.

You can't get away with that anymore. You have to skim wikipedia and then put it into your own words.

It's philosophy, unless you're misquoting people how can you suck at what's essentially just circle jerking about existence?

There's quite a lot of regimented thinking going on, which is daunting to the un-initiated (I only have very limited knowledge of it. All I can definitively say is that formal logic is pretty neat). It's also very confusing because they sometimes use everyday language as jargon or terms that sound deceptively transparent, but actually have decades of compressed thinking enclosed in them.

So depending on how charitable (or socially aware) they are, conversations with proper thinking people can be enlightening or torturous. I heart being drunk helps in either case, though it might also be the source of Milch's anxiety.

I've found Thomas Nagel's "What does it all mean?" to be a good introduction.

It's philosophy, dude. One does not DEBATE philosophy. All you can really do is relay your opinion and interpretations of the universe and existence. For instance, I feel the universe is chaotic - you might feel it's orderly. There's nothing really to debate because both takes are legitimate towards our own life experiences. All you can really do in philosophy "debates" is say,"I believe this because of y." When debating philosophy no one is really interested in CHANGING their viewpoint, they just want to fap their own existing viewpoints.

you don't have to be well-read, just potent enough in your verbiage to frustrate your opponent into logical fallacy. then pounce. they get angry. you win.
