asking for a friend.
did margaret thatcher have anything to say about this
-
It depends
Do you see yourself as making it to your 40's or not?
-
Well in spite of strangers on occasion telling me I look like Kurt C. I already missed my chance for induction into the 27 Club, so might as well string this hackneyed life out as far as I can, so, sure!
-
Why wouldn't it be?
-
like if my friend had to choose between a nice expensive smallish studio with a better kitchen that is in a slightly better location (2 blocks from a safeway omgggg) and a very nice also expensive somewhat larger one-bedroom apt for the same price, which should this friend of mine choose
or should my friend just be paralyzed with indecision and stay in my tiny month-to-month placed in Bellevue forever
I think we all know what will actually happen
-
Do you have more shit than will fit in the studio? If yes, get the 1 bedroom. If not, get the studio.
I dunno dude, I'm a pretty spartan guy so I don't accumulate a lot of shit. Also, I hate other people so no one would come over to my place, studio would suit me just fine.
-
did I mention rent in Seattle is fucking insane
-
I know it is :P
I guess location would be a pretty big factor, too. Like, proximity to work/whatever social/extracurricular bullshit you enjoy. I'm pretty simple to please- a desk for my pc fits nearly anywhere, and then I just need to keep a liquor cabinet well stocked enough to keep slowly killing me...
-
I just don't see what's wrong with a studio unless you really need the bedroom sequestered.
-

In this case, probably autism (sorry Tennin)
-
it's more that after living in a studio for couple years in Portland, and than my long Bellevue interlude of stagnation, I feel like I should move somewhere that's "more grown up" than what I've had in he past. but I dunno if this is a real thing or something I made up in my head.
-
Nah, it's a real thing. I'm almost 40 and feel like I should be buying a house. But that's not about to happen in Obama's America.
-
Yeah I think a studio is fine. It's still living on your own and paying for your own place. Don't see how any extra bedroom or two makes any difference. I mean if you were going from renting a studio -> buying a house that would be a nice step up and owning your own place has a lot of advantages (though it doesn't have anything to do with being "grown up"). But yeah, if you don't need the room, and can't easily afford something better, then what's the rush?
Like for me, I'd like to have a house someday just to not have wall-touching neighbors so I can blast music/movies/games at 3am and never care. Would be nice to have a yard to like try gardening or something. But realistically it's stupid because I don't need the space and it'd be tough for me financially, so I'm gonna wait until I'm in a long-term relationship with someone who has a 2nd income, which might be like in my 40s or 50s or maybe never, but who cares.
-
I'm really not qualified to tell you how to be a reasonable approximation of an adult, sorry cursive.
-
why not take a page out of a fellow tech-worker's book (http://uk.businessinsider.com/google-employee-lives-in-truck-in-parking-lot-2015-10?r=US&IR=T)
or is your lazy, millennial entitlement simply too strong for you to be rational about these sorts of things
-
Can he afford something bigger ?
Does he want something bigger ?
I suppose there is some specificities to the US housing market, but the expectation of ownership that materializes at that time cannot be met by just anybody.
-
In a major city? Sure
In a suburb? He's pushing it
In the middle of nowhere? Nope
Hope that helps

Eh, people in their 20's can't even get out of their parents place. You not being able to buy a house in your 40's right now is fine. Don't sweat it. It might take a while but you'll get there.
Make sure the bathroom ventilates well.
Also this.

I'd go with the studio-- sounds like the location makes it worth it. He can always do things to make the space work well, like adding room dividers with large furniture and whatnot too. The last apartment we had was a small one bedroom apartment. We stuck a big IKEA Expedit coming off one of the center walls and put the TV/couch on one side and my desk/PC on the other. It did a great job of making the room feel like two distinct areas and obscured the view on both sides perfectly. He could do the same kind of thing to hide his bed.
(And now we have a 2.5 BR/2 bath condo, that's twice the size of that place, and with a monthly payment that is less than what that apartment rented for. :doge)

As long as you are within walking distance of a barneys, neimans, or saks it is acceptable.

Barney's?
:idont

Barney's?

Sub with isetan or lane crawford as necessary.

There is a peace of mind you get from living in a bigger space that you can't really put a price tag on. Well, unless that price tag causes you to get stomach tumors from worrying about paying your bills every week.

That's what a second mortgage is for

fuck it, I'm ignoring all you folks' advice and applying for the 1BR. this gets me one step closer to my aspirational goal of having a cat someday.

Is it close to a Nordstrom?
-
~10 blocks. I've been meaning to ride my bike more anyway.
-
We talking flagship or Bellevue?
-
The whole point of this exercise is to gtfo of Bellevue, but I'm not sure I should give out any more information in case counter-NM operatives are in this thread.
-
What kind of bike? :doge
-
is it acceptable for someone entering their mid-30s to live
No, time to Logan's Run yourself.

I thought this was for your friend. I feel so betrayed.

Trust other people brehs. :donot

If you're supporting yourself and doing your thing fuck judgey ass "what's more adult" shit, a lot of people luck into places via family or SOs with money/support, I sure did...
:yeshrug
I'm always looking sideways at the expectations some people have for others that they have not accrued themselves or I know they had assistance in doing so.
-
Studios are very neat and minimalist so that's why I like them but it can be a little annoying to host multiple people. I mean I know doctors and lawyers who have smaller, cheaper apartments than they would be expected to buy because they don't care about living in the now so I wouldn't be worried about appearance. Just make sure the kitchen and bathroom meet your specific needs.
SM raises a good point that you should just never rely on family when it comes time to actually buy property. That's perma-child territory. I mean I'm okay with people getting college tuition and cosigning loans/rental applications the first few years out of the house but anyone I know whose parents bought them a house is absolutely unbearable to be around.
-
I'd jump on a studio in a heartbeat, the only thing holding me back would be the desire to have company over which does seem to be happening more lately (not the sextimes kind, mind.)
Rent in Boston is also fucking insane.

How so?

Knew a CFO who lived in a very nice studio apartment. No shame.

The ones I know have their parents very involved in their daily life and basically wouldn't be able to survive on their own.
-
Yeah if you're solo a studio is fine. Main reason my other half and I don't have one is we have slightly different hours due to our schedules with work/studenting.

Thanks, but feeling judged and found wanting is a core part of my identity and i refuse to be shame-shamed.

Okay, then something something, guests don't need to see where you jackoff something something

You get me :doge

I live in a 1BR apartment and do well. I just like to take the leftover cash and invest it rather than remodeling the kitchen for the umpteenth time.
-
I know plenty of people in their mid 30's who still live with their parents :P
Housing costs on the island SUCK.

If only those remodels were being paid for with savings instead of debt. :goty2
