Unsurprisingly the VA sounds baaaaaaaad. Gameplay looks a little like Kingdom Hearts and FFXV. Will probably be an ok game with shitty va and different characterization like most people expected.
-
uh I see no gameplay in there. also I hope they let us choose jp va unlike the ff13 games
-
Thats the wrong trailer because Wrath is a fuckup.

Combat at 1:10. Still menu driven it seems, but without fixed combat lines.
Looks nice so far. Wedge sounds like ass though. If that's a sign of things to come...
-
I like the changes I'm seeing so far. And I'm glad they're not just rehashing the original with better graphics, but expanding on it in a way that makes sense. At least, that's the vibe I get from the trailer.
-
Release date guess: November 13th, 2018.
-
Looked pretty damn amazing and I'm increasingly surprised with how much Square shows. I did'nt expect this much to be shown with (well kind of poor sounding) English voice acting.
-
Surprised they're showing gameplay as well.
Looks like UE4 development (probably) is making things smoother.
VA is terrible but all will be forgiven if they keep crossdressing Cloud and sailor suit Barrett.
-
Guys, Final Fantasy Versus XIII was shown off a few times, gameplay included, back in 2011. While this should be a lot easier to make due to a solid engine and the plot groundwork already being laid out, I wouldn't expect this soon.
If this comes out before FFXV, then god damn FFXV is a even bigger fuck up than imagined.
-
XV comes out next year. I doubt Remake does. Besides, this current Square has been far more promising then at any point during the PS3 gen.
Previous Square wouldn't have even shown this at a public place much less have actual gameplay.
-
lol ok guys. the se that could never finish projects is quickly becoming a thing of the past, so i think it's a big stretch to say these games won't be coming out any time soon.
my guess is that ff15 comes out next year, as the team recently said that most major work for the game is done. I'd imagine they'd try to get ff7 out in 2017 for the 20th anniversary, but Kingdom Hearts 3 will be coming out in the next few years too and they want to space things out.
-
shave your armpits brehs
-
cloud looks pretty fucked up. appropriate i guess
-
Looks like a modern Squeenix game. Is anyone that surprised?
-
fuck yeah barrett

Looks ace, will buy
-
I wish they had Uematsu on board

Someone's getting fired over the fact they made Luminous engine, then turns out they could have got the same results on Unreal 4 (Which FF7R is running on)
I'd totally peg this down for Late 2017 though.
-
I agree about it being out in 2017 so it can be the 20th anniversary. It just means Kingdom Hearts 3 will come out in 2020.

What does that even mean?

FF7R is episodic. I guess we know how an FF7 remake is being made in 201x. :goty2

Good, I just wanna play Midgar and skip the rest of the game. :aah

I was spot on about it being more linear, its a episodic game now :rofl :rofl :rofl
-
Good, I just wanna play Midgar and skip the rest of the game. :aah
-
Linearity isn't bad either, but you have to be high off hype to not realize the remake as a whole is going to be a lot more linear and funneled. FFVII without doing side content is a 40-60 hour long game. FFXV, Kingdom Hearts 3, and this remake are all in development at the same time. There is no way the remake will have the same scope and exploration of the original FFVII with the visuals and full voice acting it has.
My point is, instead of an open world to run around in, you're going to be put in a field and told to go somewhere. The original version of FFVII funnels you, but you're allowed to do what you want for large sections of the game.
I'm going to guess that the remake is going to be very linear for the majority of story beats, and there will be a couple really big open areas. I would not be shocked if it follows the FFXIII formula, where you do linear main quest stuff for 20 hours and the open world is used for hunting monsters/doing monster hunter missions.
I fucking knew there would be a catch.
:pacspit

I don't see the problem. I really don't see why people are pissed. Not enough info to know if that effects the scale and scope of the production. Having the game in chunks could mean the game will be delivered in a timely matter. Could keep people talking about. And could make plenty of money buy people buying the episodes and buying the eventual complete release.
I don't see how it being episodic means it has to be a cliff notes version.
The uproar is stupid.
-
This story beat is way cooler and impactful than anything that happens in Midgar
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcT1HHTGpIU
-
It's a way to get the game out earlier and squeeze more money out of the
suckers fans. Wouldn't be surprised if you need to spend over $100 to get all the episodes.

How does something being episodic change development time though?
If they fuck up the pricing for this, the outrage will be completely justified.

I agree but I would scratch the bolded. Different pieces of side content will be sold as "bonus" episodes. You want to play minigames and go on dates with the cast at Golden Saucer? $9.99 and its yours!
-
I'm not really pissed myself, just confused. Episodic formats work when the story beats and lead-up to them are unknown and you leave people with anticipation for the next episode. Everyone knows FF7's story, so that kinda impact from the format is totally lost.
FFIV: TAY (a crummy game in general) "worked" in an episodic format cause no one knew the story and the whole thing is segmented into different parts that happen at relatively the same time, until the final conclusion part. If FF7R builds up from that, expect stuff like earlier parts having level caps that you can't break until you start the next episode. :-\
-
I was gonna say that as well. There is absolutely no tension unless the development team changes the plot throughout the game drastically. Episodic games works the best when there's a lot of hype leading into the episode. With remakes, its generally a lot more fun to go through the entire thing immediately to satisfy your own curiosity.
The gameplay implications is the biggest concern besides pricing.
-
(http://i.imgur.com/rRt7Q5o.png)
Guys, the game is so big we can't release it all at once.
So either the game is episodic and you get it in small chunks. Or Square Enix is breaking the game apart into three 20 hour parts and will sell each part for $60.
-
I've no reason to disbelieve the guy really, it's just a weird decision to make. What the pricing on all these parts are gonna be remains to be seen. :doge
I just hope the gameplay is great and it feels good to control. It's story and any new scenes added are super-low priority.
-
I agree. A lot of people are comparing this to FFXIII when it comes to release format, but that isn't true at all. FFXIII was a full fledged game with tons and tons of side content, the side content makes up 50%-70% of your total playtime. FFXIII-2 was made to make some extra cash, the in game explanation of why FFXIII-2's events were happening after XIII's ending was flimsy as hell. Yet, it was another full fledged game that stood on its own mechanically. Same with Lightning Returns.
Whatever Square Enix is doing for FFVII Remake, its uncharted territory.
-
Two scenarios:
They don't have enough material to chop up and deliver in regular intervals, ultimately taking forever to be completed, maybe beyond the life of the current consoles.
OR
They have everything and are merely delaying the polish, QA and CGI production milk it for maximum revenue.
Or both. 7 episodes worth, just because. Several of which will be mostly cutscenes, for dramatic pacing. :doge
-
meh who cares if it's split
SE can't possibly devote time to a fully fledged VII since they already have a trillion other projects for the PS4 and NX
-
the real question is which episode will have Genesis in it
also there's no way in hell the complete version of the game is reasonably priced. I'm sure they're aiming for over a hundred bucks total, with lots of aesthetic microtransactions like the 13 series had
-
Will buy the completed version on Steam a year after release for $9.67.

There's a new interview with Kitase and Nomura from Famitsu, with bits and pieces of it flying around. Some translated bits:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=188226740&postcount=2987
Quick stuff from interviews
-they made multi-release since they would have to cut stuff out if they made it in one game. The detail of the game will be so dense, and you will be able to go to various locations within Midgar that you couldn't go before.
-there will be some stuff that has to be cut, but there will be lots of stuff added. overall volume will be big
-They are working with various companies outside, including CC2
-The battle system is real-time, action feel. The degree of action will be "Dissidia > Kingdom Hearts> FF7 remake" It will be more tactical.
-Although it's action style, it has ATB as well.
-You can control other party members, but you can keep control one if you want
-3 party members at a time like the original
-Character model is supervised by Visual Work's director.
-They don't want to go with 100% realism for the characters since it might make it hard to recognize certain characters. So they are going as real as possible, while keeping the character's personality.
-Advent Children model data is over 10 years old so they can't really use it.
-Everything from the trailer (excluding the stuff that was shown from E3 reveal) was real-time. The end scene where Cloud gets off the train, it transitions directly to the gameplay.
-Cloud looking sick is partly due to the lighting. Nojima likes that Cloud looks very sick.
-Cross-dressing is obviously in the game, but Nomura didn't design it yet.
-All the party member's design is renewed like Barret.
-At first they thought of going with AC design of Barret, but decided not to.
-ATB and Limit gauge is there but they are different from the original. ATB turning red is something important.
-Battle tempo will be similar to Dissidia. Battle is done by people who has experience in both Dissidia and Kingdom Hearts.
and
http://www.novacrystallis.com/2015/12/snippets-of-new-final-fantasy-vii-remake-info-from-famitsu/
Nomura: If we make the characters reall, they’ll look like real people and no one will recognize them, so we’re aiming to balance.
Nomura: Advent Children models are too old, so they’ve been refining the graphics and balancing reality and deformation.
Aside from the CG shown at the beginning of the trailer, everything is in real-time. You can alter the camera angle during the train scene.
Cloud’s appearance has to partially to do with the lighting and his pale skin. Nojima had said Cloud’s sickly appearance is brilliant.
Square Enix is working with CyberConnect 2 to develop the Final Fantasy VII Remake.
Cross-dressing scene will be included. Nomura has yet to work on the design, however.
Final Fantasy VII Remake is completely different from Crisis Core’s battle system. Not as actiony as Dissidia Arcade or KH but closer to that style.
The battle speed they’re aiming for is Dissidia Arcade’s. The battles we saw in the trailer are kind of like a standard to aim for.
Nomura can’t go into details about the battle system, but he said it’s important to note that the ATB gauge turns red. Something significant.
-
-Cross-dressing is obviously in the game, but Nomura didn't design it yet.
:rejoice
-
What story adjustments can we expect?
Nomura: We are planning some mechanism to dig deeper into each episodes. Players who have played the original version surely would know everything from the beginning to the end of the game, including some very important moments. And we are planning to give even such users surprises.
Kitase: We are not going to remake a game so you only play for nostalgia. We want to make the hearts of the original fans pump. We are adjusting the story-line with this idea in mind.
:whew
That's at least directly addressing what I mentioned before about people already knowing the story. I hope they don't somehow involve Genesis in all this though.
-
Imagine the remake being discontinued mid release :lol
-
Whatever Square Enix is doing for FFVII Remake, its uncharted territory.
Maybe not.
There's .Hack and that Capcom Dreamcast JRPG series. Could be like that maybe..
-
it has to be a multi part release. zero chance you are putting a game like FF7 on a disc today, not with those file sizes.
-
I'm curious about the pricing and how this is going to affect the game's design itself overall. Guess we'll wait and see.
-
I'm really curious about Barret's dark shades. Can he sense enemy HP with them?
-
Wow every thing I read about this sounds fucking horrible :lol
-
Trailer still looks cool, so while SE is trolling us so hard (SO HARD) I'm still interested.

So that's how they are going to do the cross dressing part. 100's of costumes like Lightning Returns as DLC . Take your own customized Cloud to the whorehouse to trick Don Corneo with cameos from other FF characters costumes.

That's kind of what I'm getting from this. I don't think it's going to be 5 or so 6-8 hour episodes, but maybe 2-3 episodes that are about 25 hours long. Something like that. Pricing will still be important, though.
-
yeah they just told kotaku that each entry will have content equal to a full-length game. lol they're gonna drag this out the whole gen.
-
"Compilation of Final Fantasy 7" just took on a whole new meaning. :doge
-
So it is going to take forever. Gonna be interesting to see if they add any sub-plots. I imagine the filler will start to grate once people realize that it's delaying the completion of the thing.

Squaresoft. *points* I want THAT. I miss THAT company. The GOAT.

My image of the relationship between Cloud AND Sephiroth was that of Musashi Miyamoto and Sasaki Kojiro, and I had them in mind when I designed their appearance, as well as their swords. Of course Cloud is Musashi, and Sephiroth is Kojiro.

Revive Aeris DLC $20.00
Though I could totally see some IAP in play with chocobo breeding. Don't want to wait for your chocobo eggs to hatch? Pay $1.99 and have your eggs instantly hatch!
-
The amount of gaffers defending this remake and their decision to split it into multiple parts is frightening. "Uncharted had a trilogy, so what?" "Mass Effect was a trilogy? This isn't new!" "This is a new series of games!"
Good fucking God. I think I'm done with Final Fantasy.
Worst thing to happen to FF7 was Nomura going from character designer on the original to leading everything and anything about it from the 00's on.
Nomura was more than a character designer. He wrote a lot of the initial story and concept. He has always played an instrumental part in 7.
-
I'll buy the super deluxe whatever edition 2 years after the last episode releases on a Steam sale for $20 or whatever.
Paying $60 (has this been confirmed? cuz lulz) at launch for each installment? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA no.
And a lot of you are talking a good game now but you'll throw down money for it when it comes out; you're weebs and can't help yourselves.

Some dude on gaf is trying to convince people this is totally worth 150 dollars and that you're insane if you disagree.

For sure, it has. There's been a dearth of quality releases on the consoles; if I didn't have a pretty nice gaming pc I would have had no trouble skipping out on the stuff that's been "next gen" only so far, even though Witcher 3 is a once in a gen caliber game and Fallout 4 (for all it's Bethesderp) is really fun.
Even future shit I'm interested in like Persona 5 is gonna be cross platform with last gen (I still have a PS3) so why bother? (I'm totally about to blow $1500ish on a gaming laptop, but that's because I can deduct it)
But the weebs comment stands- people buy Tales games at launch for $60 for fucks sakes, even on older platforms. If people have the ability to buy it, I expect them to.
:hitler
-
Replaying FFVII now, I remember being much bigger and denser than it actually is. Midgar in its entirety is around 4-5 hours of gameplay. There is no reason this has to be released in multiple parts. This strategy of releasing multiple games to tell one story could bite them so hard in the ass.
"Why have one game sell 5 or 6 million copies when we can have three games, with the total rounding out to 10 or 12 million copies?"
-
It's actually not just one dude. It seems everyone on board with the remake is down with the multiple entry thing. It's pretty insane to watch.
-
Ugh, fucking lunatics. Well, what can you expect- that's GAF for you
-
Incoming rant, but I guarantee my shit is going to be spot on.
FFXIII would've been considered a GOAT Final Fantasy if the first twenty hours, which is dedicated to boring, wooden, stilted, terrible storytelling, was five hours of that shit. Once the game stops holding your hand and abandons each party character's own story, the quality of the game skyrockets upwards. Fantastic gameplay marred by absolute dogshit storytelling.
If five hours was dedicated to storytelling instead, characterization would've been less drawn out and the characters would have to be more relatable. The game couldn't hold your hand that much, since being given complete freedom after the five hour mark means you either learned your shit or you didn't.
Final Fantasy has never had a clean, extremely well told story. Its always been anime, its always had highs and lows, each Final Fantasy is a love it or hate it type of deal. So no matter what, five hours of bad shit versus twenty hours, it would be far more forgivable if you had to endure mediocre shit for five hours.
Instead, FFXIII's team was either huffing their own shit to the point of unconsciousness, or they were scared that JRPG players would be bummed out that there would be less story in a HD Final Fantasy. Either or, the same result occurred. The narrative hate fucks you into submission. It felt like the game was wasting your time just cuz.
"We crafted a twenty hour shitty movie because we thought this is what people wanted."
"Why?"
"We dunno, don't people like Final Fantasy stories?"
-
What does any of this have to do with FFVII you ask?
Expect really simple and well crafted moments to be drawn out to the point of boredom and mediocrity. Here's how the first five hours of FFVII plays out when it comes to characterization:
Cloud doesn't give a fuck, got it.
Barret is a eco terrorist and hates what the future holds for his daughter, got it.
Tifa is a childhood friend who has non romantic feelings for Cloud, got it.
Aeris is the whimsical and goofy love interest, got it.
Cloud starts to give a fuck when the people around him are getting hurt, got it.
Barret loves his daughter a lot, got it.
Red XIII is a intelligent dog person, got it.
The gang is essentially exiled, with no purpose in Midgar. They'll try to stop the planet from getting fucked up from Sephiroth and other villains, got it.
Very fucking simple. The writing itself is charming and endearing compared to shit nowadays. Scenes play out quickly and there is very little plodding. Shit happens, what do we do? Continue.
FFVII Remake is going to get the FFXIII treatment when it comes to storytelling. Bet my soul on that shit.
Cloud is soooo BROKEN and HURT as a person, we're going to show you this via 20 minute cutscenes instead of a 20 second conversation.
Barret is sooooo CONFLICTED about being a TERRORIST while having a DAUGHTER. Hope you like 30 minutes of cutscens laying this out.
Tifa is sooooooooooo WORRIED about Cloud and his apathetic nature.
Bloated as fuck storytelling for shit that gets explained and done with in seconds or minutes. FFVII will have the same pacing as FFXIII.
-
Yup.
Bet you the part where cloud introduces himself to the gang and is like "fuck you losers, you ain't shit" and is over in 10 seconds will be drawn out into a three minute cutscene. In the original Barret screams at the team "I said no standing around! Ex soldier, huh? Don't trust you!" Done in 10 seconds of text boxes.
Watch that same scene become a drawn out annoying piece of melodramatic shit.
-
I am morbidly curious about the incoming "Miss Cloud" catastrophe.
-
Pretty fitting that CC2 is helping out on it seeing as how this is taking a .Hack esque approach. Also bodes well for the graphics and animation, something CC2 is just as good as Square at. Pretty exciting all around. The first trailer looked great.
-
To be fair, we don't know the pricing or content breakdown for each release yet, do we? Could be an RE Revelations 2 type of deal.
But even if it's four full-priced releases or whatever I'm not sure that's a dealbreaker if you've always wanted this remake. At least it's getting made and you can pick a compiled version up later, surely. The alternative is the remake not existing at all.
And even if you take a moral stand and never get the game at all, the original is right there for you on Steam and PS4. So... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
RE Revelations 2 was done or mostly done, considering how quickly the episodes came out. That was purely a business thing. If SE could do that with FF7R it would already be out. I actually believe them when they say it's too much work to do it justice, especially with two other big projects (KH3 and FF15) still in development hell.
-
Also it's interesting to me that Mods Help is chastising this game, when Shenmue 3 was done on Kickstarter.
Is it better to pay and get access to at least some of the total content immediately (with reviews etc.), or pay before development has even started and have no idea what you're paying for or how good it will end up being? Has Suzuki even said how many "chapters" of the "total Shenmue saga" will be in Shenmue 3 yet?
Food for thought.
-
Shenmue III will cover three chapters. Shenmue III is a continuation of an unfinished game story. Final Fantasy VII is a game I beat in 1998 and had a definitive end. Shenmue had no continuation. FF7 has had a prequel, and two sequels one of which is a multi million dollar movie. Both sequels ruined the ending. Final Fantasy VII is a single game. Shenmue III is the third entry in a plot focused epic. Final Fantasy VII remake only ever had to be one single game, but SE decided the remake had to be like every other rpg on the market rather than embrace the games roots. If they remade this game REmake style, trust that multiple entries would not be necessary. Multiple entries for a remake is fucking stupid.
Your comparison is distinguished mentally-challenged and that food you gave me was empty calories.
-
To be fair though, even the cruddy prequels and sequels to FFVII are better than anything related to Shenmue, tho
:jawalrus

Final Fantasy VII remake only ever had to be one single game, but SE decided the remake had to be like every other rpg on the market rather than embrace the games roots. If they remade this game REmake style, trust that multiple entries would not be necessary. Multiple entries for a remake is fucking stupid.
Your comparison is distinguished mentally-challenged and that food you gave me was empty calories.
A+ tone considering I backed Shenmue 3 and won't be getting FF7r btw.

I've seen enough around the internet saying that apparently no one would have wanted a standard remake of the original. Sorry.
-
if square wasn't aiming for advent children quality graphics they coulda easily pulled off a single release. remember when ff14 2.0 came out and the director said too much of the company was focused on graphics above all else? shame some of those types didn't get demoted.
also i say this knowing full well I'll get whatever they put out day 1
-
I'm mixed on it.
I don't like feeling like as a turn based fan I don't matter anymore. The battle system in the trailer didn't really give much hope. But I'm willing to wait for more details. Seeing Jessie and Biggs in 3d felt good. I WANT to like it. But then the multiple release thing happened and I just don't know anymore. FF7 was my first rpg so I have more emotions tied to it than most here probably, but not getting a simple ass remake burns.
For years a lot of us FF7 fans would have been satisfied with just a retranslation because the original has so many inaccuracies and is absolute ass. We got port after port, and despite the retranslations FF1-6 got we get nothing.
I wanted a simple ass remake in the tradition of REmake or DQ5 ps2.
But we are not going to get either. We are going to get a bloated multiple entry remake of a twenty year old game that dramatically changes the game in terms of mechanics and gameplay and we are supposed to like it.
Now I know how Creepy feels about Phantasy Star Online.

IT IS THE LITERAL WORST OMG THE HATE THE HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE

I never thought PSO was that bad but then again I had no emotional attachment to the franchise.
-
I'm with you 1000% on a retranslation. so many other old rpgs got that treatment that at this point it's just laziness on squares part.
and while i think the remake could still be fun, i assume it'll end up like you said, with every plot point drawn out with more boring melodrama.
-
i never had that much attachment to the series but i still knew pso sucked :doge

The original PS wasn't the first rpg I played (that was Dragon Warrior/Quest, and I think I even played the OG FF before PS) but it easily outclasses all of them in every way, imo. II is among the best rpgs ever made and IV is incredible.
And they turned the series into a shitty Diablo clone so that people like Bork could have something to give their lives a false sense of meaning. You wonder why I go out of my way to dance on Sega's grave any chance I get? There you go.
-
I have played all of the Phantasy Star's (1-4 :doge) but when PSO came out I didn't see the big deal. But as I played them years later, I started to get it. IV is a classic. My favorites are that and 1.
Turning FFVII from a traditional JRPG into a modern action esque JRPG with a third person camera just...it's wrong dammit. Everything about it.

Just remembered RE2 is going to get a remake.
Will probably be a lot better than FFVII's remake.

As if that wasn't already a given, despite not having Mikami or Kamiya behind it. :doge

Imagine Resident Evil 2 remake and they give it gameplay similar Resident Evil 6 except it's RE2's story.
Then they announce that you can only play as Leon in the initial release, and that Claire will be released on a later date.
And you have people telling you this is what everyone always wanted for an RE2 remake and that the old RE2 gameplay is outdatded and that there's always the original.
That's where we're at with FF7 remake.
It'd be pretty hard to fuck up a remake more than that.
-
A Resident Evil 3 remake with a real well developed Nemesis AI that legit chases you instead of appearing at pre-determined points through out the game :lawd

imo video game stories more or less always benefit from being simpler and more straight forward. The big sprawling melodramas where every character gets 100+ lines of dialog to 'establish their character' are always shittier for it. Never been too big on FF, or any rpg series really, so it doesn't burn my soul up if this is bad, but the sorta actiony gameplay style of the more recent FF games has me interested, so it would be nice if they just tried to make something good n solid for once.
-
The more action-y battle system is a big sting and I don't think it's exactly a surprise people who say they don't care for jRPGs much are totally fine with it. But for me, it's kind of annoying. FF7 never had a great battle system. But if there ever was a remake they could have updated it without giving it an experimental battle system. I'd be totally fine with embracing something that works. FFX-2 battle system on speed. Something traditional but still being a lot more fun than FF7@/ battle system would have been preferred.
For me, it's like making REmake 2 and making it play like a modern shooter and people say,"well, there has to be something different to make me interested" when, upon remaking a game, you kind of expect them to keep things like that in intact, but improved in a tremendous manner, ironing out the issues of difficulty and balance it originally had.
It's also a slap in the face. Fans ask for a remake for over 10 years, and instead of giving them FFVII with FFVII's battle system, they give them this new experimental battle system you're using in your latest title. Commamnd-based, turn-based jrpg battle systems are a rarity. And with a remake of a 20 year old one, there's an expectation that they appeal to oldschool players. But here we are, and SE is appealing to people to people who don't even like them to begin with. To make matters worse, almost every rpg on the block is an action game of some sort now. But people crave more. Let's have no turn-based games at all. Not even remakes of games with turn based battles.
-
There are plenty of turn based rpgs being released these days, just none from eastern developers.
-
It also stands to reason this new battle system will be another form of neutering the remake.
FFVII, despite having an easy battle difficulty, has a lot of interesting shit. Namely in its materia system.
Do you really think the new battle system is going to be able to account for stuff like Deathblow? Or 2x Cut/4x Cut? Or even Manipulate? What about Enemy Skills? I doubt it. FFVII is a game that has menus of menus of options at your finger tips. Will such options be offered in the remake with the action battle system? Doubt it. Then is it still FFVII? No. It isn't. If FFV or FFX-2 were remade so that you can't customize your abilities because space is limited due to the inherent limited nature of the battle system, would they still be FFV or FFX-2? No, it wouldn't be.
And it shocks me people think that's totally okay.

I highly doubt they'll have as many options. But I'm willing to eat crow on this.

All AAA wrpgs are action-based now. Don't be silly.
The turn-based games that are all coming, no matter the territory, are from smaller sized devs. Persona 5, Divinity;etc. But the big boys and girls shy away from it because they think it's not appealing to the mainstream. In actuality, Japan is much better about this than the west. Dragon Quest XI is turn based. Pokemon is still turn based.
And people are absolutely fine with S-E taking their experimental streak into FFVII's remake, which by all intents and purposes by the virtue of being a remake, never needed an experimental battle system.
I think there could have been a great FF7 remake out there. Somewhere, somehow. So long as it embraced the original as much as possible, stayed true to it, updated the graphics, and was released in a quick manner, much like all the dozen of FFIV or FFV or FFVI re-releases and remakes with graphic updates. But no. Gotta be ambitious towards FFVII, for some fucking reason.
-
Dragon Age Inquisition can be played basically turn based, and despite it not being as good as, say, a Witcher 3 or even Fallout 4, is certainly a AAA wrpg.
-
Okay, but that's one exception, no? I barely identify AAA wrpgs as wrpgs anymore. I have nothing against action rpgs, but what's wrong with turn-based rpg gaming?
-
Nothing, but apparently you can't get em with AAA budgets anymore? Pillars of Eternity was a pretty good wrpg (I'd rate it better than DA:I personally) but if you're the sort of person that can't deal with all the trappings of AAA being absent, then yeah, you're pretty much SOL. (Dragonfall was another really good turn based wrpg, now that I think about it)

Place your bets on where the first part ends.
I'd guess they made Midgar a 12-15 hour experience. The last playable bits will be Cloud telling his story on Sephiroth in a campfire scene outside Midgar's gates, and how he went insane in Cloud's hometown.

Yeah, sounds about right.

Can't wait to pay 60 for 1/3 or less of a game I bought for $50 in its entirety like 20 years ago!
