Beat Axiom Verge

Solid game, very impressive for just being developed by one guy. Doesn't come close to Super Metroid in terms of level design though.

How complex/hard is it?
Title: Re: What did you finish? 2016 Edition
Post by: Fifstar on January 03, 2016, 09:58:11 AM
On normal it's a decent challenge, but doable. Definetely not NES hardcore difficulty. There is one annoying boss, was stuck on that one for half an hour. Overall playtime was 12:30, but I will spend a couple more hours to find most of the secret stuff.
Complexity is also finely tuned. There are a couple spots where you will be stuck but you normally won't have to consult a guide, at least as long as you'Re not going for 100%.

It's not a bad idea to keep notes of spots where you can't progress, otherwise you will spend some time running around and backtracking after you get the needed backups. I guess when I was a kid it was easier for me to remember spots like that ;-)

I've just finished Arkham Knight. Great game, the twist about AKs identity wasn't that surprising with all the foreshadowing but it's definitely a satisfying ending to the series. I still need to finish 90% of the Riddler trophies to get the final ending but they're not too bad.

I so do not want their next game to be Superman though. I just don't think you can make decent sidemissions with somebody who's nearly invincible against regular plebe criminals.

Beat the Halo 5 campaign on co-op with my nephew yesterday on heroic difficulty. Easily one of my favorite Halo campaigns.

I'm also a little more than halfway through Dragonball Xenoverse.

Also finished Axiom Verge on PS4. Will play again on Hard mode.

Yeah, really liked the function in the game where you can place two reminder markers per area on the map. That was really clever, I thought. Just sliiightly dumb that you can't remove them entirely once you've placed them.

Oh you can place two per area? Did not realize that, that makes them a lot more useful. Btw. i think you can remove them by "clicking" again on the same square.

€13 for Axiom Verge is a bit too pricey for me. I'll get it at some later point.

Dragon Quest Heroes (PS4) - I would consider it a middle tier Musou title.  I'm not a huge DQ nerd so I'm sure there was tons of fanservice that went over my head.  The game's biggest weakness is that it appears to be focused heavily on escort missions.  Like many games featuring escort missions, the people you're supposed to protect are the dumbest motherfuckers alive, running headlong into a huge group of enemies.  Like many Musou games, your team members will often stand with a thumb up their ass while you're fighting off a dozen monsters.  Lots of Rare style collectathon missions but you can assemble a ring that is more likely to get mini medals and then trade in mini medals for some of these hard to find items, creating a shortcut.  There are some challenging missions in the game and the game fortunately will let you keep the loot and experience if you fail out of a mission.  A 6.5/10 game.

I don't mind paying for media as long as the price is reasonable.

€13 was the sale price. Now it's back to €18 again.

I have hundreds of games in my backlog and I don't mind waiting a few more months for it to drop to a lower price.

Wolfenstein: The New Order
Grabbed this on sale a while back after seeing some glowing praise from people who's tastes I respect. Wasn't expecting much, but this shit was a blast for the most part. It manages to ride the line between being campy and overly serious much better than I would expect from a game about Nazis taking over the world. Ending boss fight is awful though. Boss fights in general are a pretty tired concept but throwing a player in a room filled with environmental hazards and a bulletsponge is so fucking lazy that after I died twice I just ratcheted the difficulty down to zero and ran through it. After 11 hours of shooting dudes to death, the penultimate test of the game shouldn't be 'run around trying to find enough ammo to kill this thing before it kills you'.

Just Cause 3
A lot of fun but suffers from the exact same problems as JC2, albeit not as strongly. About midway in JC2 I got really burnt out, and the last half/third of the game just felt like a chore. I had a similar feeling in JC3 when the veneer of blowing shit up and zooming around kinda wore off, but the addition of extra tethers, the wingsuit, and some of the new weapons added enough variety to keep it from feeling too stagnant. The story is as silly as ever, but the VO is well cast and it's never too corny.

Pony Island

You're a trapped soul in a satanic video game that has the facade of kids game.  Solve some puzzles, beat some runner levels and get the fuck out.

It's only $5 and 2.5 hours long.  It's a cute novelty that sadly wears itself thin near the end.

7/10 wait for a Steam sale.

Framed

I think Kojima-san said this was one of his favourite games some year and it is a nice little puzzler for mobile. Its pretty short so it doesn't outstay its welcome which is important for mobile, and it can be played in very short bursts too.

The puzzles aren't hard but some will make you think and try just long enough so that this game doesn't turn boring or frustrating.

Really liked this game and played it on the hardest difficulty, which was challenging but fair. Last boss fight was bullshit though and the only time I had to lower the difficulty.

The Old Blood was more of the same, while offering less. Never really reached those same highs and if the main game was say a B+, the expansion was more like a C.

Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen

God tier combat

Mediocre everything else

Would buy the shit out of a sequel that added more meaningful content (actual quests would be nice ) and a better world (shit just give me a dozen BBIs and we're good).

Max Payne 3

Great third person shooter with amazing production values. Controls were very responsive and the gunplay was satisfying. I also really loved how varied the levels were. Fighting your way out of the Brazilian favela was  awesome.  That said, I am never going to replay it because someone at Rockstar thought interweaving the gameplay with cutscenes every couple of minutes would be a good idea. That completely killed any replayability the game might have had imo.

Not sure how well the game sold but I hope enough for sequel!

I also beat D3 Ultimate Evil edition on the ps4 last year. My only complaint was the difficulty as well. I leveled a Barb, A Wiz and a Crusader. Things really didn't get hard until Torment. great game otherwise. I think I prefer the console to the PC version. It just felt good to play with a gamepad.

MP3 probably sold a great number of units after all the super-cheap sales it has had. I think I bought the game and the season pass for a total of US$7 or 8. I don't think it sold nearly the amount Rockstar assumed it would, but a good portion of the work on the RAGE engine and networking code was most likely amortized into GTA V's core.

Absolutely loved it. It's Kojima through and through (I'm a big fan), and very ahead of its time with its subversiveness and production values (a LOT of spoken dialogue, some awesome cutscenes, and some absolutely gruesome pixel art). Terminator 2 is one of my favorite movies ever and it's a HUGE inspiration to this game, and cyberpunk is also my shit... It's got a bit of that Japanese Adventure game "investigate everything multiple times until a new option appears" logic and a few combat sequences that are like whack-a-mole but other than that I was absolutely hooked and could not put it down. Just check how badass the intro is:

Snatcher is awesome and worth a play-through- It and MGS1 are my favorite Kojima games.  I couldn't get into its follow-up, Policenauts, however.

One day I'd like to play SD Snatcher. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SD_Snatcher)  I wonder if it ever got fan-translated...

played thru Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands. game was painfully... average? competent? it wasn't bad or boring, but there was literally nothing in it that felt new, surprising, or exciting. the last pop game i played was sands of time (bc warrior within looked like shit) and this felt like the same game. reminded me of Mega man in that it was fun but totally predictable.

also reminded of how bad ubisoft ran the series into the ground, before that became their standard business model. there were a shitload of pop games that came out between sands of time and forgotten sands, and none of them seem remarkable.

Someone was asking me in my gaf blog on VLR if I dislike all games lately, so I looked through my reviews of what I've played in 2016 so far and I've actually really liked a lot of what I played this year!  In fact, making a top10 was tough and I had to leave a lot of quality good gaming like Ratchet Remake and Uncharted 4 out.  Plus I know Persona 5 is gonna be on there and maaaaaybe FFXV if it doesn't suck.  Also Last Guardian maybe?

Anyhow, this is my top10 so far from what I've played in 2016 (not necessarily what released in 2016)

1.  Soma
2.  Ao no Kiseki
3.  Nier
4.  Asura's Wrath
5.  SMT4-2
6.  Hitman
7.  GG Xrd Sign & Rev
8.  Fran Bow
9.  Project Diva Future Sound
10.  Exist Archives / Cold Steel II tie, both were good 8/10 rpgs that are getting kicked off once I put Persona 5 on there.

DOOM - easy GOTY, no real explanation needed here if you've played more than a few minutes. If you haven't, go rip your head off with a chainsaw and give me some ammo already ya fuckin jerkoff

Her Story - point and clicks are still fun, and this was so much more satisfying than a whole season of law and order criminal intent combined. Ace dumb twist.

Rise of the Tomb Raider - TR2k13 was great and this is more of the same but with more tombs and collectables. Fine.

The Beginner's Guide - I love nongames about games, so this was right up my alley. It kinda ruins the Stanley Parable though.

Superhot - amazing gimmick, kinda barely is a game tho

Just Cause 3 - this sucked, just play JC2

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - This game blew and every sidequest felt like a chore. The story was painfully dumb. Fuck this game so much

I learned that if you have the PlayStation App installed you can actually delete PSN games on your profile that are at 0% (no trophies). It bugged me that I had Super Stardust on there for so long. No more!

Wish XB1 added this back in. You can only do it with 360 games.

I ended up beating two more games, The Last Guardian and Letter Quest Remastered. That's 31 in total.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is okay. I prefer "Dear Esther", "Gone Home", and "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter".

Esther Carter's Gone Home to the Rapture

For winter break I beat Batman: Telltale and Firewatch.

I really enjoyed the Batman story and I'm already looking forward to more. Firewatch, not so much. A lot of lead up to what felt like "it was the mysterious third cousin what committed the murders, the end!"

Firewatch was unequivocally terrible. The story was middling with a poor ending, no character development to speak of, and visually the game looked like a student project. A huge letdown considering the praise it was given.

how was everbody has gone to rapture?
Not very good. A better "walking simulator" is The Vanishing of Ethan Carter which shares the same mysterious vibe but has nicer visuals and a more interesting plot with a minor attempt at providing gameplay.

Amazing soundtrack. The story is a well-acted radio-play, only instead of a narrator telling you what you see you walk through the environments yourself. Not all that interesting. Again, amazing soundtrack though.

Post by: demi on December 29, 2016, 11:29:36 AM
Rapture was my first "walking simulator" and I thought it was pretty garbage overall. There's zero payoff with the story (and this is probably THE most important bit with these, imo). The atmosphere is neat, I guess. The music was pretty good.

Finished Shadow of Mordor before platinum-trophying it, because it started to feel like work. It was a great game, but had some trophies that encouraged a type of play that was micromanaging instead of Fuck Shit Up, which is its core strength.

Also determined to be "done" with Clash Royale. Was on a 10-loss streak, I'm not competing, and don't like being laughed at. I'm disturbed that it even bothered me, so I am removing it from my life.

Eh, it was okay, but really generic and easy. Just a really basic DRPG.
