Title: EntrepreneurBore - Get Rich or Die Trying
Post by: Atramental on February 20, 2016, 07:44:49 PM
"I'd rather work 80 hours a week for myself than 40 hours a week for someone else."  :doge

After doing a bunch of searches for a new job it's becoming very clear that working for someone else to earn a living will just make me miserable in the end.

SO, while I'm working at my current place of employment I'm going to slowly yet meticulously set up a designer clothing side business.

I think my target market is going to be rich young CACs but I'm probably going to start off by marketing my clothing to lower income urban youths because rich young CACs just love to steal cultural paraphernalia from that demographic.  :doge :doge :doge

I haven't written out a formal business plan yet. :yeshrug

Anyways, feel free to share pointers or experiences if you yourself are an entrepreneur (I'm looking at you AIA) or fucked around with the idea of becoming one.

Good luck!

You made your first move by quoting that USD500/day fee for design recently. Get used to that kind of thinking.

It's a lot of hustling and stress and fatigue. At first, apparently you have to do everything yourself. That part hasn't been fun so far.

Honestly doesn't seem to be worth it unless you're really passionate about whatever activity you are in. I also suspect "real" entrepreneurship is more about doing it with other people's money (at least in part) because anything more complex than one-man activities where you are selling your workforce with a bill instead of a wage -which I would argue are hardly being an entrepreneur, no slight intended- requires some form of capital and probably some sort of hired help for the accounting and abiding to regulations. It's not just a matter of working longer hours, but the fact that half those working hours will probably be devoted to menial tedious shit and/or agonizing about even turning a living revenue.

I am toying around with the idea of setting up a business in my current line of work, but without even running a rough cost analysis I know it's a six figure matter right off the bat so... yeah.

I have a bunch of friends that are entrepreneurs and they like to ask me what my #1 tip for business owners is, it's sadly simple: Have money.

You're going to make mistakes and they will cost you money. The businesses that succeed largely succeed simply because they have more money to absorb mistakes. Sucks but it's true. Cash flow is the most important thing.

Apparently the market for marijuana protection services exploded in Colorado and will likely continue to. There's a bunch of kids, mostly ex-military, starting for unprofessional-looking companies now and making money. Seems pretty easy to do with the right talent pool, but I don't know how long these little fish will last as the big firms like Brinks or even Blackwater-like companies move in with much better organizations and well-known names.

I did some more research and apparently the reason it's only kids and unprofessional-looking companies in cannabis protection is that if you shoot someone on duty (i.e. protecting yourself or a client) you are in violation of federal drug crime laws with mandatory minimum sentences of decades. No thanks.

Just reviewed my current financials and I currently have about $25,000 in liquid assets (being a single and childless workaholic with no debt has its benefits). So, I think I could take $1000 to $5000 of that to start out.

It helps that I'm a designer by trade so I can make most of my t-shirt designs myself and outsource the printing to a company like printful (https://www.theprintful.com/).

edit: Actually, before I do the whole t-shirt thing I may need to set up a blog/facebook account/youtube account so I have a platform to promote my products on.

True.

Another thing I was thinking about doing was teaming up with a developer I know and brainstorm about an app that could help a certain niche market with a specific need.

But that's going to take a lot of thought before we think of something worthwhile.

Just make a shitty F2P game with gotcha elements targeted at a young and impressionable audience and/or low IQ people and exploit them.

This is what capitalism and freedom is all about.

I'm thinking of a slot machine where you collect pictures of cats or something. Sure that can be developed for 5000 USD.

Had a friend (working insurance until then) who looked into getting a food truck, he quickly made a 180° once he started getting into the actual rules and regulations for the job. Not too surprising since cleaning the truck to safety and health standards must be a pain. So far he told me, you also have to jump through a lot of official hoops to get any sort of parking spot to conduct your business all the more since there's not a lot of those because of the intense competition.

Oh! Just had another idea.

A graphic design school geared towards kids. Kinda like the place I went to after school to get art lessons.

I wouldn't be a teacher (because I hate being around kids) but I could hire a bunch of struggling designers to teach them.  :gladbron

spoiler (click to show/hide)
But of course I would have to be careful of  :jared 's creeping in...
[close]

edit: Eh, but then again, I've heard that some public schools in my area are beginning to incorporate graphic design as an elective so I would be competing against them.

edit2: Also, I'd much rather be selling products that could make me money while I'm sleeping rather than managing a bunch of people so they don't fuck up a service.

Man, my boss might drive me crazy but god what a sales guy. He really understands the flow of: Define the problem, make it look scary, tell them how you're going to fix it and make them feel stupid/out of date if they don't follow your advice and close the deal. He really does a good job of making all of business this one thing, people have problems, you can fix it. All you have to do is understand the problem.

I think I'm going to start a youtube channel about graphic design in a month or two once I have all the necessary equipment and written out some in depth talking points/scripts.

But... I'll have to be incognito since I don't want future employers seeing me in all of my explicit glory. :doge

My end goal for the channel is for it to be a marketing funnel so that my potential fans can buy ebooks, courses, and apparel from me.   :money

The channel will definitely be geared towards education/infotainment. But feel free to tell me about other ways to make money. I'm all ears.

There's a lot of young hipster types hogging up a good chunk of the "Graphic Designers on YouTube" pie but I'm aiming for the niche that's into weird/obscure/non-trendy shit.

I've already gone to 4chan's graphic design board to gauge levels of interest and there were a good chunk of design students/wannabes that seemed open to it.   :hitler

I can't give you industry-specific advice, but:

-Expect to bleed cash, plan accordingly. Cash is a bad source of liquidity in situations like this. (i.e. Gain access to revolving credit.)
-Don't get stupid with taxes, especially any local taxes. My limited exposure to local taxation in South Carolina was not pleasant.
-You don't strike me as a great people person (I'm not either, I mean no offense), how are you going to make friends and influence people?

Hire me for sales

I don't believe I've even hit 85k in gross income over the span of working as a carpet cleaner during one summer and my 3 (soon to be 4) years as a graphic/web designer.

Now, on the bright side... I have zero debt.
