Title: Boritos, how are you going to survive the impending "Job Automation Apocalypse"?
Post by: Atramental on April 05, 2016, 09:45:19 PM
This question has been popping up in my mind rather frequently since the US would be one of the last places to implement a guaranteed minimum income for its citizens.

I've been in the process of learning more and more "creativity based" skills (i.e. design, animation, video production, etc) that would be impossible for a machine to replicate on its own without human guidance.

I've specialized in an extremely important field that not just anyone with free time can do. :doge

Is joining the machines an option?

I could see Microsoft recruiting prolific internet personalities for brain scans so that their next generation of chat bots will be much more intelligent than your typical /pol/ poster.

So in short, yes.  :doge

My job is impossible to automate or outsource.  So I'm not worried in the slightest.

Having said that, I'm stashing away tens of thousands of dollars a year in savings and investments.  My goal is if I get "right sized" in my 40s and 50s, I will have millions of dollars that I can just live off of.  That or fritter it on hookers and blow.  I'd rather not end up in some retirement home where I shit myself day in and day out.  Fuck that, I'll just end it then and there.

My job is one you can't automate. But it is one you can simply do without and take the lumps in money loss.
That's where I feel people fall into, unless you're an exec your job can be automated away in the years coming or your job can be outsourced completely or the company can just do without you and hope the loss is less than paying you.

You know, it's funny because everyone is like "haha it's years and years away." Just last year I was leading a project with more than 70 people on it and I remember telling my boss, "This is the last time this will happen. Just watch" Now, less than a year later our biggest teams are maybe a dozen. Same thing with our competitors and cohorts. You just need a lot less people either that or companies are just willing to do without.

Very true.

I'm apart of a small web design/development firm and marketing agency and we are starting to run circles around the larger agencies in my area. Also, some of those larger agencies laid off hundreds of employees just last year because they could no longer justify having so many people doing tasks that a small yet highly skilled group of people could do instead.

I'm concerned about job automation (though working as a technician in something tangentially linked to creation helps) but really now the problem is more with "job being sent in another country".

Trained replacement who then got replaced by software analyzing more data than any human can crunch.

It's happening, fuck contract work

I'm getting back into distributive computing and machine learning. I'm gonna make my own damn platform to replace the non existent workers I need, and I'll call them mupepe'

edit:

Alternatively, this:

Gonna join a luddite gang that goes around beating the shit out of machines

Is why job automation will still keep me busy.  ;)

I'm going to take the AiA route and just be better than all you jobless plebs.  I'll will myself to being rich and then you free loaders will literally eat off my money.

If you haven't started by  now, you're too old. Best for you to just go the Chris Farley route and speedball yourself to death before the depression sets it :hitler

I thought the Chris Farley method was to sell half a million brake pads to Dan Aykroyd and expose the dirty dealings of my step-mother and her secret lover Rob Lowe.

I have really been doing things wrong.

I work in a factory that processes mail.

:point

Not trying to be a lifer though. I'll switch to part time in the fall when I go back to school. So about 2 more years of this, and then maybe I'll have a shot at some quality of life.

The job I’m doing now will someday be automated, but the war against the machines will follow shortly thereafter so I’ll still find ways to keep occupied.
