With consoles seemingly on course for a 3/4 year refresh cycle building a PC is kind of interesting again even for scrooges like me.
As it seems the biggest bottleneck is the cpu and I was wondering if something like the I5-6600K could outlast the PS4k and the PS5 (basically 7/8 years with this cpu). I mean you could OC it down the road if it was needed.
Maybe get a new gpu down the road but thats it.
Input?

PS4k apparently just has a slightly higher clocked PS4 cpu which means a 5 year old cpu like a 2500k will still be better.
As for the PS5 cpu, nobody can tell you that with certainty. Considering improvements in cpu speed seem to have slowed down, I'd guess it's very likely.
-
As a personal anecdote, I got an i5-6600K and am as happy as can be with it.

I read somewhere that Sony is forced to go with AMD CPUs because of the deal they have with AMD for the GPUs and that AMD CPUs are limited to kind of weaker processors, which is why the PS4 and PS4k CPUs are weaker.
I've never used an AMD CPU before in a PC so I have no idea if that's true or not.
-
Sony is 'forced' to use an AMD CPU insofar as they're part of the same silicon as the GPU, a combo AMD calls an APU. They're off-the-shelf parts made for notebooks and HTPCs. Cheap, don't draw too much power/produce too much heat, stronger GPU than CPU (with Intel it's the opposite).
I'm still using a Phenom II 965BE. This thing was EoL when I got it and still does good work. I'm going to keep using it just to see for how long it will still serve me. I care about framerates a smidgeon more than the general population, but I don't have to run everything max. So long as I can get a sharp image on 1080p at acceptable framerates I won't need to upgrade.
Same goes for my 280X GPU. That thing was a re-brand from a generation prior. Good enough for 1080p right now, but maybe not too much longer. (The PS4K GPU looks like it might be as, if not more powerful.)
I want to keep the system at least until DX12 games take off, to see how that shakes out with this configuration. Don't feel the need to upgrade otherwise. (Power consumption is a bigger concern, actually.)

If you want to be really future proof you gotta get a hyperthreaded octocore CPU. You NEED 16 logical cores :doge :neogaf
But srs, the capability to process highly concurrent applications will (eventually) be more important, maybe one of AMDs currently underperforming octocore CPUs will stand the test of time with new games better than say Intels Quad core architecture if the promises of DX12/Vulkan etc hold true. If I was to splurge on a new CPU and wanted it to be future proof (currently got a 4690k) i would choose something that was at least quad core w hyper threading.
-
More and more stuff is taking advantage of the i7's hyperthreading, I'm going to drop the extra hundred bucks on it over the 6600K and claim it's because DX12/Mantle/etc. will use it.
And just upgrade my video card in a year or two instead of this year.
And then ports like Arkham Knight will still come out and it won't matter if I built Batman's computer array.

Waddya think guys? This build is just under 1100 $

Alternatively I could possibly get this one with 40% off Monday, which would make it 1250 $

Of course the desktop would smoke the laptop but still.

Aw, the ITX 970 is so cute. :heart
Looks good. I don't like gaming laptops much (and hence know next to nothing about them), but that looks decent specs wise.
-
Unless you're traveling a lot I wouldn't do a laptop.

I gotta agree with this. Heat issues and upgrades are the major factors. If you got money to burn, well... you can do that.
As for the PS5 cpu, nobody can tell you that with certainty. Considering improvements in cpu speed seem to have slowed down, I'd guess it's very likely.
From what I've heard, next-generation CPU's are gonna be focusing on more cores or parallel processes than speed. We're basically going down hill toward slower CPU's but better management so the story goes.

Def not gonna move around but Ive never had a good wireless keyboard and mouse that would work at 3m away from the pc, kind of worried Id plant the mini itx under the telly and have no good way to play it.
-
Looks good, I would just check how easy it is to fit a 970 into the node 202. Quick googling suggests it works but that there be lots of fan spinning due the small case and cable mgmt might be a bit tricky.
-
Bit the bullet on this build, except I went for 8GB RAM and a different mobo and a Gigabyte 970 mini.

8 Might not be enough if games continue to increase the amount of RAM required.
-
The new Mirror's Edge recommends 16gb. But RAM is dirt cheap so it's not that big of a deal.

Order got delayed, got cold feet and cancelled.

If you primarily want to play multi-platform games from your couch using a gamepad then you might as well pick up a new PS4/K/Neo. Suspend/resume is a fantastic feature when you live with other people.
-
Probably yeah :gloomy

What an emotional rollecoaster.

Yup. Buy a console.
Or buy one of those console-sized PCs.
