Alright, I've put 15 hours into Xenogears, I'm at Kislev about to steal my gear back and stop Rico's execution. Here are the pros and cons of Xenogears thus far:
Pros:
Visuals have aged well and there's a lot of color and vibrance.
There's some incredibly solid sections of gameplay combined with narrative. Breaking into a castle while a martial arts tournament happens at the same time. Fighting mechs in a desert while your buddy is trying to accomplish his espionage mission.
Really neat bits of interactivity. Running over someone's shit on a blanket results in them complaining, people to ask you to move out of their way. A lot of small touches that aren't in other JRPGs.
Minigames or gameplay diversions have been neat and executed well.
Cons:
The combat is fucking boring. You'd think a turn based game where you can do combos as your main attacks would be interesting. What ends up happening is doing a bunch of weak combos to unlock deathblows, and eventually deathblows start outclassing earlier deathblows, making those combos not even matter. Combos take too long to watch.
Encounter rate is fucked in dungeon areas. You often run for a few seconds and then a battle happens. Random encounters in other JRPGs of all eras weren't this bad.
Encounters happening IN THE MIDDLE OF PLATFORMING. WHY. THIS IS A FUCKED OVERSIGHT. Missing a jump and having to more random battles is beyond fucked.
Combat difficulty is non existent, combining that with boring combat means you get a good battle every couple or few hours.
Accessory and weapons are basic as fuck. Shit, Fei and Citan haven't had weapons for the entire game. I get their martial artists, but god damn, looking for weapons in any all shops results in disappointment.
The localization/writing is not nearly good enough for how much shit you have to read. A simple conversation can go on for three minutes. I don't know how to express how longwinded dialog can be, and how simple it is at the same time. Xenogears makes Metal Gear Solid 2 cutscenes look breakneck and fast paced in comparison.

After 15 hours, there have probably been around five hours of brilliance, and then ten hours of amateur hour horseshit. I'm fine with this format, of storylines picking up at a certain point. Deadly Premonition is nothing but weird bullshit until the final third. The difference there is the moment to moment storytelling was hilarious, goofy, charming, endearing in Deadly Premonition.
I've heard how disc 2 is dreaded for changing the game's format completely, but as long as shit starts to get answered and explained, I'm fine with the shitty dungeons being thrown out.

Golden Sun is my pick. Bland, unchallenging puzzles. Low difficulty encounters. A story with a ton of exposition that really goes nowhere. Disappointing considering just a few short years ago, Camelot made one of the best strategy RPGs in existence - the Shining Force 3 trilogy.
I have yet to play Legend of Dragoon but I have a feeling that might go on here too.

I tried to play it three times but never got very far. I think I only ever reached the second town before I had to put it down.

There have been a couple points where I wanted to stop playing and delete the game. And then something cool or awesome happens. After something awesome, it seems like the story is going somewhere, but then the long period of nothing really happening starts again. At this point, I want to see it through, but that means putting in another 30 hours, at least, to finish the game.
Meanwhile, I played 50 minutes of FFIX, just walking around in the first area, and then playing Tetra Master, building up a deck after 10 wins. The prologue of FFIX alone has more charm and finesse than 15 hours of Xenogears.

if you're only in Kiev then you have muuuuuuuuuch longer than 30 hours to go. you're like maybe 1/8 thru the game. but yr not gonna get a whole lot different. combat will continue to suck, with tons of shitty dungeons, frustrating platforming, choke point bosses, and boring random battles. the story goes in a million directions but is total 90s anime.

Yeah GS is one of those mediocre games that got a lot of hype because there wasn't shit on the GBA at the time.

I'd say that any game that doesn't have the words Final and Fantasy in its title can't really approach the most overrated jRPG throne but Xeno is also a Square joint so we're gonna allow this one. :teehee

I agree on a few things:
-XG gameplay hasn't aged well at all and sucks shit; the platforming is beyond horrible
-The US text speed is atrocious and unplayable, JPN is a bit better
-The dungeons are pretty bad
-The battle system is just ok
Yet:
-The story is still the best story idea ever. It's highly original, and no game or film has ever been as epic as XG millenium spanning plotline
-The soundtrack is still the best music ever
-It's got cool mecha
-Chu-chu died for your sins
Since XG at it's core is the best game ever, but it's severely dated, my unfulfilled dream was that they'd remake the game on 3DS using the same graphical assets, but modernize/speed-up the gameplay, instant text scrolling. I mean Suikoden I+II on PSP basically did that (though the original Suikoden games are nowhere near as dated as XG) and made them instantly relevant and the best things ever again. I really really wanted as XG modern re-release, but it never happed ;_;
Still my favorite game of all time. Every short story/game concept I've ever written has been heavily influenced by Xenogears.

The concept of the story is cool, but the localization and execution of the story bring it down and the gameplay is so painful it makes me not care.

What I really loved about Xenogears (and think few JRPGs fail to measure up to) is that it manages to convey cool events well (and generally without FMV... or anime in its case). It's very... 90s in its production values, but I'm not ever going to see something similar again I think.

i played the intro to Golden Sun. it was an hour of cutscenes to set up a "defeat the four elementals" plot. turned it off and moved on. fuck that bullshit.

I remember being pissed as a kid when I beat Golden Sun in like 3 days. I was notorious at the time for getting to the last disc or last dungeon of jrps and just not caring anymore so it was to actual see an ending. Then underwhelmed by it.

Golden Sun's puzzles and using your spells to solve them are interesting but hampered by the clunky UI.
Everything else about the game is meh. I beat the entire game without ever needing to use an inn and only using the fusion stuff to solve puzzles.
And like a sucker I bought the sequel but never finished it.

FF8 at least can be hilariously broken if you knew what to do. System's wise it was really fun, provided you were willing to experiment. And Triple Triad was my Gwent.
I remember liking FF10 at the time, but I also remember being really annoyed with the random battles. The majority of fights was so awfully rote. Flying enemy, swap in Wakka. Chunky armoured guys, Auron pls. Jelly palette swap #17, Lulu, if you would?
I wonder how FF7 and 9 hold up.

FF8 is terrible because it's gameplay is so obviously exploitable. If a gameplay system can be exploited, it should at least make the player feel clever. House pets and Huelens can exploit FF8. It is terribly designed. I imagine it's systems weren't heavily tested.
FF10 has good combat, but aside from geaphics, the rest of the game is offensive. It's terribly linear and has awful characters, an awful story, and an awful localization. it dumbed down many aspects of FF for the sake of
animuization.
X2 is only slightly less awful than child porn.

FF7 is really easy but jacking up the battle speed to its max makes battles go by really quickly. Localization is rough but there's a lot of charm and characterization in there. Plot and scenario wise its still fantastic. The story itself is anime as fuck, but it isn't even close to Xenogears on the anime scale. FF7 is a 6/10 on the anime scale, while Xenogears is a 10/10. Soundtrack is still excellent.
Playing FF8 for the first time, know a lot about it going into it though. The drawing system is actually neat, as you can build your party into roles and classes from the get go. Max battle speed makes battles quick, drawing from enemies isn't that bad with maxed out battle speed. Localization seems like a big jump from FF7, FF8 feels completely different than any FF, in a good way. Great soundtrack.
FF9 is incredibly well done when it comes to everything, but the battle speed is fucking terrible. The transitions into battles take 8-15 seconds, your first round of attacks will happen after 5-10 seconds. I would be enjoying it even more if the battling wasn't this stilted,
