Still running a 1080p TV? Then you should forget about buying Xbox Scorpio.
That’s the message from Xbox boss Phil Spencer. He was asked by Eurogamer about the thinking behind announcing the new Xbox One S only to an hour later reveal a brand new machine, Xbox Scorpio.
“You should buy [the Xbox One S], because Scorpio is not going to do anything for you,” Spencer said after asking the reviewer what TV he had – in this instance a 1080p set. “Scorpio is designed as a 4K console, and if you don't have a 4K TV, the benefit we've designed for, you're not going to see."
“Clearly, you can buy Scorpio, and if and when you decide you want to buy a 4K television to take advantage of the increased performance, obviously the console will be ready for you. For us in the industry, it's easy to think that most power is always the thing that wins. If you look at last gen, what won? The Wii won. The Wii sold more than we did on Xbox 360 and the PS3, and it wasn't the most powerful console out there. Price is critically important. Wii was a good price and it had a great experience.
“Scorpio is for the person who's got a 4K television, who's really focused on 4K gaming. It's going to be a premium price over what we're selling this one for, and both of them will exist in the market at the same time. Scorpio is for your 4K gamer. And that's what we designed it for.”
It was speculated yesterday that while it seems Xbox Scorpio will have a quite significant power advantage over PS4 Neo, that advantage will come at a cost – that literally being the cost, which could be some $100 more than Sony’s new machine.

Sony reps will say the same kind of shit to justify keeping the weaker PS4 around. Both companies know the 2013 consoles were just stopgap hardware not intended to last, and now they're both gonna do that song and dance to keep current owners from feeling like they got sold a weak, busted laptop CPU bill of goods. But you're probably not gonna make a thread when that happens :teehee
-
Uuuuh what
:doge
I'm not sure if Scorpio is powerful enough to have games in 4K that is all breh

And neither will the Neo or whatever Sony is calling it. Which is his point.
If you want 4K, buy a PC. :smug
-
Yeah of course, I just can't believe there are people falling for this MS PR that Scorpio is some 4k console when 6TF from AMD plus a Zen proc is not gonna do any wonders at 4K.
I mean it would be a killer machine for 1080p gaming with everything maxed and 60fps but not 4k.

This really needed to be explained? :doge

More gimmicks, more lost revenue

They're releasing two different systems (S and Scorpio) and most people have been talking about Scorpio as the successor to the One, so kinda yeah. :doge
-
The S looks so clean.
Hopefully reviews are good, imagine all that free space wow ! ! !

I guess I meant that they needed to specify that you would need a 4k teevee to notice the 4k resolution output of the scorpio.

At this point I'll buy anything that reaffirms what I tell myself: "I did not waste money buying a 4K TV."

Microsoft won't turn your Xbox One into a PC, it wants to turn your PC into an Xbox One (http://www.polygon.com/2016/6/14/11936766/xbox-one-windows-e3-microsoft)
Games for Windows is back, baby 8)

Honestly that's fine by me cause it means I don't have to buy a bone to play its 'exclusives'. :teehee

Thanks for telling me

It's funnier because apparently one of the consulting developer/publishers on Scorpio is Valve
http://time.com/4369910/xbox-one-s-project-scorpio-microsoft-e3-2016/
I’m not probably supposed to say this, but I sat down before this show with the leaders of Valve, and I showed them Scorpio and what we’re doing . . . Valve and Steam specifically is a massive part of the PC gaming community today, it’s growing like crazy, it will continue to grow. I think it’s got a long, great future ahead of it. I think as the platform holder of Windows, I think there are things we should be doing to make Windows 10 a great gaming experience. Valve applauds us. As [Valve co-founder] Gabe [Newell] says, there are going to be areas where we compete and areas where we cooperate and in the end of both of those are good for gamers.
I've seen that "Good for gamers" line repeatedly across interviews with MS and Sony execs. Shit's getting cartel like. They really don't want Apple, Google or Samsung anywhere near their pie.
-
The three of them have already run away with most of the pie.
-

I imagine that's what the scenario will be anyway. MS just wants to be the ones to start using the term '4K console gaming'. And drill it into consumers minds.
It also forces Sony to react or risk looking behind the times.
I mean these consoles seriously struggled to do 1080p this gen. I'm expecting a few '4K' titles the rest will be at decent resolutions but no where near real 4k.
-
i can't imagine a scenario where anyone outside of a small fraction of tech geeks gives a fuck about 4k in the next 5 years
-
Nah, this isn't like 3D television, 4k sets will eventually replace 1080p sets and become the standard. They're already coming way down in price. HDR is the gimmick this time, IMO.
-
HDR is cut from the same shitty cloth as "smooth motion"/interpolation. Fuck that shit.
I hate it for photos too. Shit looks so fake.
-
I'm ambivalent, but 1080p does scale up really well to 4k, and companies like Netflix are on board in a big way (unlike 3D), so there'll be a lot of 4k content in a couple of years. By that time the sets will be the same price 1080p are right now. Just saying it's less of a gimmick and more of an inevitability. Plus, higher resolutions are always welcome and applicable in the PC realm. It's just retina shit on a larger scale. Really pretty depending on what you're watching, unnoticeable otherwise.
-
pffft. Of course they're be an upgrade for Scorpio owners without a 4K TV. They will finally be able to play Xbox One games in full 1080p.
-
4K in movies is the woooooooorst.
:confused
-
If they don't make it a development requirement (which it sounds like they won't) then it doesn't even matter. Most companies will make their games for the biggest hardware base, which is the shit everyone owns already.
I feel like we have 40 years of games industry history to teach us this lesson, but if they want to keep releasing SEGA CDs or PSVRs then it is their money to waste I guess.

Maybe talking about upscaling? I get distracted by non-4K content on 4K TVs when they have that smoothing shit turned on. It's disruptive to the viewing experience.
-
The phrasing is just weird if so. 4K is a just a resolution, all serious movie cameras can capture image natively at that size and it's becoming the norm for post producing films and broadcasting them in theaters. For all intents and purposes, "4K" is cinema as of now, the same way 35mm was.
That some TVs have poor upscaling and some weird shit and settings going on and denaturing a movie image is spot-on tho.

What was the cause of the "soap opera" effect from The Hobbit's particular framerate? Was that shooting at 48fps or something? That's unrelated to 4K, yes?

48fps instead of the classic 24fps, indeed. By definition more images means less motion blur, which may strikes you as "unnatural" if you grew up with classic chemical film.
Digital cameras on the whole produce a sharper, more even image but that partially can't be helped because classic film texture is a result of photochemical grain and stuff, which is naturally noisier and often way more specific in how it capture colors. Big trend currently is to mount old ass Soviet or interwar 35mm optics on cameras to "break" the digital image.
EDIT: On top of that, digital grading allows for pretty insane image modifications nowadays (regardless of it you shot film or digital), you can target any specific color or luminance spectrum to work it independantly, when back then all you could do was adding to the whole frame more red, green and/or blue and change the global luminosity. Lots of previously unthinkable image textures started popping in the early 00's.
