So I'm giving in and gonna install W10 right this moment since I have to reinstall office 365 anyways on this computer. I'm guessing there's a bunch of settings that I need to make sure to turn off to make W10 as good as W8.1? Can anyone give me a quick concise list. Thnx.

The post above is correct. When you install it, select advanced settings and opt-out of all new features.

As if that is a hard feat to do, since Windows 10 out of box is already miles ahead of 8.1. :doge
If you care about your privacy/are paranoid, look into turning off the telemetry they do.

It'll let you know.

Seems ok so far other than getting a weird pop-up error anytime I open a document in word, which is weird since I installed office/word after updating. But it doesn't seem to effect anything.

my annoyances with Win10 relative to 8.1 are mostly about touch/tablet mode features that are worse:
* no easy way to get back to the last application like Win8's left swipe, which becomes frustrating especially when you've navigated to an app from a link or notification and want to get back to what you were doing before
* Edge's swipe navigation is nonexistent in the current TH2 public release builds, and still significantly worse than Metro IE11 in the RS1 preview builds
* Start is worse for maintaining large tile collections - no multiselect/multidrag/etc., no zoom
there's no way to somehow fix any of these with a setting, though.
