Title: what's a millennial
Post by: seagrams hotsauce on June 30, 2016, 02:11:03 AM
Is it an age thing or is it a taste thing? I've been seeing it as kind of interchangeable term for hipster recently, I'm like 30 am I still a millennial?

A marketing buzzword for a group people my place of employment doesn't market to because they have no disposable income. :doge

I was playing chess with my younger-by-years girlfriend in public once* and this blowhard former wonk or whatever sat at the table next to us and proceeded to go from asking how to setup the board to how we were voting in the coming primary this year. It was like our fourth or fifth date** so I said something to the effect of, "I don't vote in presidential elections, it's pointless to do so in California," because it was our fourth or fifth date and my girlfriend didn't need to know that I'm Enver Hoxha irl and the blowhard first tried to tell me that it might actually be a race this year*** and then apologized for his gauche behavior, saying that he just found Millennials fascinating as a former wonk or whatever.

It's like, the people after Generation X I think? I'm sort of at the tail end og one and slightly before the star of the other. Just another meaningless marketing buzzword basically.

From what I understand it's a catch all term for Generation Y.

Of course you'll see it used like "Hipster" or "Emo" has been in the past, people just want something to complain about.

Isn't it the group after Gen Y?

It's the same thing.

Millennial makes a lot more sense than Gen Y because each previous generation had its own distinct name (silent, greatest, baby boomer, gen x) and millennial follows that tradition.

It's totally meaningless because the start and stop dates are all arbitrary anyway.  I think 1981 is the starting point.  I remember seeing a clickbait headline that said "there are more millennials now than any other generation" like it was supposed to mean anything.

I enjoy belittling my fellow millennials because they simultaneously hold the beliefs that they are the best people to have ever walked the earth yet they are hapless victims who can do nothing to change their situation around.
