Title: How do you figure out a good hairstyle?
Post by: meeb on July 10, 2016, 09:54:36 PM
I literally have no idea how to style my hair. My family is of no help either, always telling me it looks "fine" but basically admitting that it never looks good.

I thought I had something decent going on but was basically made fun of at work for my hair, so obviously I was off the mark. I have no idea what would look good on me.

How do you guys figure it out? I really just want to go to some high end salon and tell them to figure it out for me, but most of those high end salons typically cater to women so idk how good they are with men's hair.

Yes, I'm aware this is a GAF level "How do I do life" aspergers thread. Sue me.

I've got tricky hair to deal with (tons of cowlicks), though I'm very lucky at my age I still have a full head of hair. Anyways I am not the most trendy person, and I have one haircutter I go to at a high end salon, a middle aged Italian-American lady (I only trust middle aged women with my hair actually, nobody else can get it right). And I just let her do 'whatever looks good', it usually comes out fine.

So that's actually an option? I can find a high end salon, say "do whatever you want" and have them not fuck my shit up?

You can usually find a salon/barbershop that caters mostly towards men in most metropolitan areas. Just go on yelp and search men's haircuts if you don't believe me. You can show them pictures or say the magic word (undercut) and they'll know what you want.  :)

Obviously YMMV with how good they are with your particular hair but try to research a little about what guys with your ethnic background/hairtype usually get to know what to suggest and expect to pay like $30 with tip.

there are plenty of infographics/blogs out there that push certain styles only suiting certain head shapes (or just cater to whites with thick, straight hair in general  :doge)
but honestly just bring some pictures of stuff you like to a reputable barber and if he/she is worth a damn they'll let you know what they think would work best for you

from there you can adjust the lengths being cut, clippers go from 0 (shortest) up and they can show you how much would be coming off in inches
then you can decide on more options like tapering and fades, sideburns, around ears etc

but yeah if you don't care about the minutiae as long as it looks good just give them a general direction with a pic and give them the reins

That worked for me too.  It's a valid option.  I always had to dump gel into my hair to get it looking how I wanted it to, and that would make my hair all hard n' plastic-like or the gel would flake like crazy.   :yuck  So after years of doing that crap, I tried shaving it and liked the way it looked.  I don't even go to a barber anymore since it's easy to do at home.

If you are handsome it doesn't matter how your hair looks, if you are ugly it doesn't matter how your hair looks.

Sadly even when you find a good hairstyle the barber/stylist gets it wrong over half the time. At least it grows back!

You'll also need to be honest with them about your own styling tendencies. There are a lot of good looks which require a little effort each day, and if you can't commit to that, get something simpler.

Short back and sides, ask for your fringe to be left a little longer or shorter based on preference is a good staple for white dudes. Don't cheap out on a barber unless you just getting a buzz cut.

Back in the day when I cared about that shit, I would go to a gay hairstylist or a hot chick hairstylist and asked them to do whatever they thought was sexy.  None of them ever fucked around with me here fortunately.
