Title: Disney World vacation
Post by: fistfulofmetal on August 04, 2016, 06:05:33 PM
Girlfriend and I are thinking about taking a Disney vacation next year.

Any tips or useful info? Which hotels should we book? Any packages that make things easier?

She gets discounted tickets from her job so we'll be able to leverage that.

fwiw I enjoyed Universal Studios/Islands of adventure a lot more when I went. Of course the last time I went was 2004 so I was only like 11 then.

Don't try to kidnap kids in the park.   Wait until you get to the parking lot.

I think Disney would be more fun without kids. They're just so.... stupid, and a bother.

Florida or Cali?

We're going in October for the Halloween stuff! Very excited! We booked at the French Quarter resort, first time I've ever stayed at the park. Went with the full package including food since I got a good deal through my work.

I guess I'll have more recommendations after we actually go but right off the bat I can say definitely do the Luau dinner show. It's super cool but gets booked very early, like 6 mos in advance. It doesn't cost anything to reserve a spot so do that as soon as you figure out a date.

Port Orleans is the GOAT place to stay at World. And it's (relatively speaking) cheap. Plus boat to the Downtown. Good drinks and food.

Indiana Jones bar  :mouf

It's also kind of a less obnoxious Vegas if you do it right: don't stress the rides, avoid crowds, drink / eat around EPCOT and Animal Kingdom.

I go there all the time, if you ever need any specific advice let me know.

Parks
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Don't rush multiple parks a day, they'll try pushing a multi-park day pass but it's not worth it. Even relatively less busy parks like Animal Kingdom become a chore if you try cramming things in with other parks.

Epcot has more adult things to do, lots to drink and eat at different countries. Always events and live music, most times of year there's always a big band or food/drink event to go to. I'd definitely recommend going here.

Magic Kingdom has the more updated rides.

MGM's a shadow of itself and in a weird point that it's both outdated but also has some modern stuff.

Animal Kingdom is kinda lame tbh. Haven't been there since I was a kid like 10+ years ago but not much has changed.

Hotels/Foods/etc.

Take advantage of resorts/hotels at Disney. There's lots of good food and places to hang out at.

If you want a resort hotel stay at Fort Wilderness, which is camping themed. Great cabins + lots to do like biking/walking and free movies at night on a projector. There's also lots of good food there and ferries to other cool hotels/places connected to the monorail.

Best breakfast/food at a relatively reasonable price is at Port Orleans followed by a bomb breakfast buffet at Fort Wilderness.

The boardwalk at The Swan hotel is great for a late night walk, lots of cool places to chill and nice old-school ice cream parlor. If you go and want to share some icecream order the Kitchen Sink.

If you want good Tex-Mex go to Chevy's which is right outside one of Disney World's main entrances.

If you have any other questions just ask, I might know it.

Thanks for this info. Fort Wilderness looks cool but it's a bit expensive plus it looks like its being refurbed. You mention Port Orleans but have you stayed there? It's a bit cheaper.

Also - how many days do you think a reasonable person should spend? 3 days? a full week?

I'm not a ride person so I probably won't bother with any of those. I like the theme park aspect.

I had just as much fun there as the kids when we went a few years back. Staying in Disney is expensive. We stayed outside at a great place called the Blue Heron. Big rooms and a great pool. Plus, you can see the fireworks from the balcony every night and not have to beat the rush out of the park when they are done. It's also just a few minutes drive to the closest gate into the park. There are lots of nice places to eat within walking distance.

Wherever you stay it will be well worth it. I'd love to go back.

That's where I'm staying, I picked it mainly cause of the price and the boat. The pictures all look good, so I'm expecting it to be pretty cool in person. Also we're doing 4 days in the park and one night there for the Halloweeen stuff. Even with that much time I feel like there's no way to see everything I want to see. I'm not a huge roller coaster person but there are a lot of other rides I want to check out.

---

How does the whole fast pass thing work? I've never done it. Do I reserve the rides before I leave or once I'm at the park?

Do they still have that cool "game" with the cards where you go to various areas of the park and save your assigned princess?

This thing was super meta. Do this for sure, its hella fun.

  :o Never heard of this.

But it looks like some of the cards are recent, so maybe.

Its like Disney Magic the Gathering. I loved it when I played.

They changed Fast Pass recently. It depends on whenever you buy your ticket. https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/fastpass-plus/

You link it to an account and you tie to a kiosk/app.

Trying to plan fastpasses around where you are going is key. Running in and out of "areas" to get to places on time is more of a chore than it might sound.
"You may begin making FastPass+ selections for your vacation on August 30, 2016."

Neat! Of course I'm not sure where we are going quite yet. I have us doing Epcot the first and last day, Hollywood Studios the 2nd day and Magic Kingdom the 3rd day. But as far as a route or anything, I dunno yet.

One of the packages I found for the Port Orleans resort for a week plus tickets was like 2.5k which isn't as bad as I expected. If we booked now we could easily save up enough money for it plus extra for spending cash.

Yeah ours was about the same for 4 days, but we also got the food package and parkhopper tickets, which I don't think we'll actually take advantage of lol. Also just bought tickets for the Halloween Party, should have known that the tickets on Halloween itself would have been a decent jump in price. :doge

You dont really see much of that at Disney. It's never really been the case for all the times I went.

I've been there twice. I really liked Magic Kingdom (both times) and thought Hollywood Studios was okay. Animal Kingdom was blah.

Honestly, I would just do one day at Magic Kingdom and 2 days at Universal. Take one evening to go to Downtown Disney. It's a cool place.

I stayed at an off-site resort both times (they had a waterpark for the kids), but I wished I would've stayed at one of the Disney resorts. They looked amazing when we walked through them (the one by the Boardwalk).

Busy times tend to be Spring Break, Summer, and Christmas so if you can avoid it try to come when there are less crowds. Summer the heat is pretty miserable too. My favorite times to go are Octoberish and late January, the weather is nice and the crowds are small. When were you thinking of coming?

We were linking Spring 2017 but after Spring break and before Summer. Though we haven't talked about it that much.

We used to camp there a lot as kids.

Depending on how many days you're there, you can pool hoop at all the different places. Both of the waterparks are awesome.
