Title: Steven Spielberg's Best Film?
Post by: Cheebs on January 25, 2007, 12:10:26 PM
The thread on 60 reasons why he rocks made me curious what everyone's favorite Spielberg film is.

Mine is Raiders.

Raiders if fucking great, but to me Jurassic Park is the epitome of summer blockbuster. I mean, who doesn't like Jurassic Park?

The Color Purple is amazing and Amistad is CRIMINALLY under rated btw

I chose Raiders

Jurassic Park is the epitome of summer blockbuster.

A LOT of people don't like JP Mr. Flame. Many spielberg fans seem to think it and E.T. are over-rated.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I like JP

Also, ET is over rated.

JP is a steaming turd. Just above Hook and JP2 in terms of crappiness.

Since the thread is called "Spielberg's BEST film", I voted for Schindler's List. If this was a favorites thread, then I would have voted for either Jaws or The Last Crusade.

Many, many, many people (not me).

Rememeber most  big time films fans tend to not like summer blockbusters

I watched JP last month for the first time since its original run on video.  I can't believe I ever found it to be decent, even as a summer blockbuster.  The acting is so poor, the pacing MADE ME FALL ASLEEP, and Jeff Goldblum's character is like the worst thing to ever hit the screen.  Far too long between action segments, and the plot parts are boring.  The special effects have held up really well, though.

Also:  Raiders is his best movie.  I have a soft spot for Empire of the Sun, but I believe that's because I have a big boner for J.G. Ballard.

That sounds really pretentious. I consider myself a big time film fan, and I have no problems with blockbusters.
My only criteria is that a) they dont insult you be playing to the lowest common denominator, and b) the film is actually good. Being a popcorn flick and being a smart film aren't mutually exclusive, yanno!

By blockbuster I am not talking about the Jaws or A New Hope's of the "genre".

More the Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Armageddon...etc type of stuff that the public goes INSANE over in the summers but have little substance
Title: Re: Steven Spielberg's Best Film?

I was not aware that Jurrasic Park had little substance.

oh jesus christ... :lol I feel A New Hope is indeed classic cinema. RETURN OF THE JEDI? It's a fun adventure film but you are getting a degree in film you need training sir.

FOC this might help you understand. It would be like someone saying

"Video Games are a fantastic art form, I am getting my major in college in a video game related field." And then when asked what their favorite game is they reply "Madden 2006"

GTA games are fucking great, I don't care what everyone other than Himuro says.

That's not what I'm saying, but having Star Wars as your favorite movie makes you seem like the type who's probably only seen Star Wars, some pixar films, and a few summer movies. Not a supposed student in film.

And most if not all the hollywood star wars fans do not consider star wars the favorite films. Kevin Smith the "big" movie star wars fanboy doesn't even include it in his top 10 film of all time. I don't think you are taken seriously in the film circles if you call star wars your favorite film ever and I love star wars.

Star Wars is a fantastic movie for what it is. It does its job better than anything else that's similar, and I love all three films. That being said, it's not my favorite movie - To Kill a Mockingbird is.

Like Star Wars, Raiders does its job better than any movie: to date it's easily the best "adventure" movie I've ever seen. I watched it again a couple months ago and couldn't help but be impressed at the pacing of the movie. While nothing is over looked, nothing drags on. Amazing. And unlike Star Wars, Raiders delivers on every level. The acting in Star Wars, while helped along by some great dialogue, had some cheesy spots - which is understanable considering the movie is basically Lucas' homage to Flash Gordon and similar movies he enjoyed as a child. Raiders features some great preformances and even greater lines.
