I had to analyze this article for gaming class, and I figured some of you may be interested in reading it. It's pretty interesting I think, entitled "The Lester Bangs of video games"

Intersting article.
However, video games in 2006 are the equivalent of Rock and Roll in 1967? Erm, sorry. Nope. Rock and Roll was a cultural force in 1967 that changed the attitude of America and helped change history. Video games have not done anything nearly as important.

Yeah, it was a poor comparison, but I get what he means.
I think hip hop is a more accurate comparison, but then the Lester Bangs title would have little purpose.

Yeah, I would say hip-hop except that most mainstream hip hop moves our generation back one step. :(

Well, I generally meant that, while hip hop has taken our generation backwards, it's influence is not debatable. It still had it's detractors and critiques at one point in time - particularly when people were more scared of it; some felt that hip hop was a trend, just a small fad that would eventually disappear. Whether video games are able to pull itself out of that situation and hold some cultural significance that can influence others like movies and music (namely rock) is questionable, but it's still a possibility.
I think that hip hop has basically failed that proposition as of now, as it has alienated it's original target audience rather than growing up with them. Video games could suffer a similar fate, but as it stands now, I doubt it.

People always talk about those competitive gamers being popular, but no one honestly talks about them outside of their stupid little circle.

I don't see how it's any worse than calling racing, for example, a "sport."
