Didn't have an alarm system while renting, but as soon as we bought a place, an alarm felt like a must-have.
We use a service called SimpliSafe. It's a monitoring service, but you don't need anyone to come out and wire shit up-- instead, it's wireless (uses 3G), modular, and you buy a starter kit from places like Amazon, with various sensors that you can easily put on doors/windows, and can buy additional parts as needed. It doesn't cost that much every month and it works great. Perhaps too great...we had a few false alarms because of the dog and my mom screwing up, but hey...confirmation that it works. The cops actually came pretty quickly. And since nothing is wired up, it's easy to take everything down and bring it with you if you move.

Use saliva to attach a strand of your own hair from the door to its frame. If you come home and the hair is gone, you know you've been infiltrated.
When home, put pennies between the door and it's frame on its top edge, so the penny drops when the door opens.
Also consider a trap door under a welcome mat.

Yeah this is the first time i will live in a house, only lived in appartments and terraces so far.
Security system with guard service is like 50 bucks a month.

Alarm systems are pretty pointless here in Sweden since the police won't respond to them. A security guard might show up later, but he isn't allowed to interfere with the break-in. If the burglars are still inside he will call the police and wait for them to arrive. Most professionals are well aware of how many minutes they have to work with.
It has some value as a deterrent but I personally feel that the monthly fee is too high. My solution is to buy good outdoor lighting and cooperate with the neighbors.

In our old house we did self monitoring. I just made the system call me and set the alarm to trigger. It's mostly a deterrent. They don't know who it's calling and they will most likely bail as soon as they hear it unless they're a pro who knows what they're looking for and where it is. In that case you're screwed anyways. The only reason our current alarm is set up with a service is because I found one for $20 a month and they monitor carbon monoxide and our fire alarms. Security system monitoring is such a damn scam most of the time.
