Title: Alec Baldwin's The Shadow is better than Billy Zane's The Phantom
Post by: The Fake Shemp on January 25, 2007, 10:19:56 PM
And both are better than Warren Beatty's Dick Tracy!

I watched this movie a few weeks back, I was going to make a topic about it being awesome but I wasnt sure how it would go.

Come on William :-\

What's wrong with Dick Tracy?

I dunno, I liked The Phantom better because it was a goofy Raiders knockoff.  The Shadow was a colossal disappointment to a longtime Shadow fan like myself.  The Shadow should be killing criminals while laughing about it, not shooting the guns out of their hands.  And the camp elements were completely out of place.

I'm not saying The Shadow is the bee's knees, but in terms of the whole 90s resurrection of mid-century pulp heroes, it's one of the better ones out there.

Also, The Phantom was awful and very homoerotic.

I didn't notice any homoeroticism.  I was too busy noticing all the rejected Indiana Jones stunts and Catherine Zeta Jones.  I wish The Shadow would have been based on the Andy Helfer/Kyle Baker comics if they were going to do something different.

It was the worst comic-to-film adaptation previous to Spider-Man, dude.  Emulating the colors of the comic strip was just not very pleasing to the eye.  And trying to get Madonna to act automatically puts you in 2 star territory.

Dick Tracy is pretty bad except for the great makeup FX on the villains.  Warren Beatty is such a wooden putz in every movie he's in (well, except for Bonnie and Clyde, he was okay in that).

The best of the mid-century pulp hero craze was The Rocketeer, which I am sure all of us can agree on.

Warren Beatty is awful, Madonna is awful, the story is awful - wait! - there was a story?  Dick Tracy is a laugh riot.

I dug the Rocketeer.  They really captured the feel of the Dave Stevens work (which he still hasn't finished).  Rondo Hatton 4ever!

The Rocketeer was really cool, at least in its day.  I haven't seen it recently or anything.

Yeah, Dick Tracy was a round the court disaster.  That awful color scheme is the first thing I think of, though.

And the fact that a 53 year old man is playing youthful detective Dick Tracy.

The only positive thing I can take from Dick Tracy are a few Danny Elfman tracks from the score, although The Shadow had a much better and original score.

There needs to be a movie version of The Spider:

That's one fucked-up pulp hero.

He sounds like a villain that Batman would fight.

Yeah, but then he was like, "I don't want to be in this piece of crap!"

And did Congo, Assault on Dome 4, Escape from L.A., and Tornado! instead...

Hey, his role in Escape from L.A. is awesome.
