Gears of War 1, 2, and 3, however, I don't think this really works for games the way it does for music.  Most games that were popular enough to spawn a franchise probably had anywhere from a couple dozen to a couple hundred people working on them.  So many different parts have to come together (gameplay, graphics, writing, etc) that a game designer doesn't have anywhere near the amount of influence auteurs in other media do. Sometimes the series will change hands from one developer to another and even when that doesn't happen there're still a ton of people coming in and out of the company throughout the lifespan of the series. 

The amount of people working on them means they're also ridiculously expensive.  Most game series tend to become increasingly risk averse with each installment.  To use an example from the music thread: OK Computer, Kid A, and Amnesiac each have their own sound.  A new Radiohead album means I can expect an electronic rock album, but it's tough to get more specific than that.  A new Gears game though?  It'll be a third person, cover based shooter in a dystopic setting.  Throughout the campaign you'll usually have at least one companion (controlled by another human or AI).  There will be aliens, roadie running, a chainsaw, and a whole bunch of other idiosyncrasies we've come to expect over the past decade.  The iterative nature of games make a series of home runs a lot less impressive.

Then again, I've personally been out of the video game game for years now.  I'd genuinely be interested in reading counterarguments.

A "series" doing something like that is pretty rare except for like my Crash example, and you can do something similar with Mario by going Super Mario Kart - Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island - Super Mario RPG but you often have to draw the "series" widely like that.

For a developer (equivalent to a band/artist) it's probably far more common, but less so especially now that developers are putting out maybe one game every other year at most.  For example, my "SingleTrac threesome" of "vehicular combat games" "changed" (cars->subs->cars but with tourists) each game and came out over an 18 month span, while they were doing and also releasing four other games in the overall three year window. (Jet Moto, Jet Moto 2, "Jet Moto 3" Streak and Outwars.)

You have certain developers like Insomniac who have been able to do a Ratchet and Clank game three of the last five years, while doing Resistance 3, Fuse, Sunset Overdrive and Song of the Deep along with a bunch of mobile stuff. So you'd have to look to somebody like them. Or Valve, whose last three fully internally developed releases are I think, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2 and DOTA 2.

But many studios don't have that kind of flexibility and often generally get to do one new IP inbetween their sequels. Hell, that's even been someone with the stature of Naughty Dog every generation. The three Crash's + Racing, the three Jak's + Racing, the three Uncharted's + Giraffes.

I agree with Rahxephon91 about Metal Gear Solid 1-3.

I wanted to add The Elder Scrolls and Quest for Glory, but those have four consecutive great games.
