I thought I was prepared for that trailer.
I wasn't.

In general I don't care for action schlock but there's enough self-awareness and (just barely enough) heart that I've come around 180 on this series. Watching F7 in theaters with work bros who have always loved the series was one of my best theater experiences ever.
Sorry, I'm gonna double down on this. Hero turning what appears to be bad because they've secretly got a good reason for it that they don't tell anyone and then old comrades fight them and DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA is like one of the worst angsty tropes in storytelling and that's not what I want out of the FF franchise.
The reason the other FF movies were awesome (at least the last three) were that they were fun positive teamwork movies. Feel good and do crazy ridiculous shit and save the day movies. I don't want serious angst FAMILY DRAMA movie :| I watch FF to have pure exhilarating fun. I'm sure I'll see the next FF movie, but the plot of this one does not appeal to me at all.
I thought we all like Fast & Furious because it's one-stop-shopping for angsty tropes.
no, we watch it for the gay subtext

Got invited to go see this tonight, but gonna pass. Really liked some of the last 3 (7 > 5 > 6) but the trailer for this one looked lame (dom goes evil oh no what happens to family!!) and reading all the critic reviews the consensus seems to be that it's ok but not great like 5-7.

So did anyone go see it?
My thoughts:
I'm a little hot a little cold on it overall. There were some legit great moments but quite a few set pieces and sequences that fell flat to me. It also just didn't hit quite the right tone that the previous movies did. I can say that it's immediately noticeable this is directed by a different person, like 7 was, but that at least felt consistent with the series. This feels like a different thing all together. But I think there's a really cool setup for the next two that comes off the back of this so if they manage to stick that, it'll be worth it in the end. It's still pretty entertaining but a step down from the previous entries.

The opening scene was terrible. Legitimately bad and it took awhile for me to reorient and for the movie to win be back. The entire premise and action sequence of the Cuba stuff was just embarrassingly poorly scripted and executed.
I did appreciate that they didn't drag out Dom's motivations until the end and instead made his side of the story a major factor of the film, especially him trying to worm his way out from under Cipher's foot.
The first half of the NYC setpiece with the "zombie" cars was a whole lot of nothing to me. Some super spotty CGI effects and it just looked lame overall. However the second half where Dom faces off against his team was super fun.
The final setpiece also had the same problem where there was a lot of spotty CGI but as it went it got better. Really the entire final set piece doesn't get good until Jason Statham shows up again. From then onward to the ending was a big thumbs up and I left the theater with a positive impression
I think my overall problem with the movie is that it just doesn't feel like a part of the series a lot of the time. It feels like it's trying to be something else and not doing a very good job. Like... it wants to be a super slick spy movie? But the writing isn't backing it up, and the characters are as well written either. There are moments where it feels like we're there, tho, where it feels like we're back in thee F&F series and in those moments are when the movie is at it's best.
Like I said, I enjoyed it but it's probably my least favorite outside of 2 and the fourth.

I agree with you. It felt like more complete movie than 7 was, but I'm not sure if I'd put it above 7. 5 and 6 are still far and away the best movies in the series. There were enough crazy scenes to make this worth watching, but it's really starting to feel like a departure from what this series was and what it became after 4. Also the "face turn" for Shaw was just weird. Gotta spoiler the rest of my thoughts:

-I liked the opening scene in Havana. That was very much reminiscent of the old F&F movies.
-It's almost like they feel obligated to have at least one scene in any one of these movies that's ASS ASS ASS CARS ASS ASS. :lol
-Cipher is an 'eh' villain. I didn't feel like she was anywhere near as menacing as she should have been.
-What is with taking cast members and killing them off? :lol Did they really need to off Elena like that?
-It took too long for them to reveal why Dom was doing what he was doing. Should have made it apparent from the start.
-The Shaw brothers basically being turned into good guys was just weird. They retconned Han's death before to introduce Statham's character and now retconned their characters to make it so that they were also 'used' by Cipher. Ugh. Just stop.
-Furthermore, we have Shaw rescuing Dom's baby and then sitting with them at the end of the movie. REMEMBER HOW HE KILLED HAN!? :lol
-I did like the plane sequence with Shaw, although it felt like it was from another movie.
-So let me get this straight, from a purely storyline perspective- They can't go to Brian and Mia for help, because they have a family...but then Dom gets a freaking BABY and now is in the same boat. :lol

of course they retconned the retcon of han's death :lol
watch these films for any semblance of a plot brehs
