Title: Boritos, Let's Play FFXIV (Free 96 Hour Login Campaign / 2 Week Free Trial)
Post by: 213372bu on December 12, 2016, 02:56:36 PM
I figured I make a thread here since not everybody might check the "I just got FFXIV thread".

Anyways, a couple of Bore members have been interested in playing/are playing FFXIV so I wanted to make a thread to let others know.

If you've never played Final Fantasy XIV there's a free trial on PS4 and Steam for a two week period. Additionally, if you've owned FFXIV and don't have a current sub you might be able to get 96 hours free until 1/4/2017.

We'll be playing on the Hyperion server, and while that's not my main account, I'll try to be on while everyone else wants to do stuff. I also don't play as often nowadays, but I'd be willing to play more often for fellow Borians.

The game is pretty fun and you should be able to clear a lot of content for free if you want to try it out.

Anyways, considering the free periods and everyone wanting to jump in after FFXV, now's a great time to jump in.

Also, controller support is not only supported, but also highly recommended. If you've never liked complex key bindings or w/e with MMOs, FFXIV fixes it with their controller support.

Free Login Campaign w/ requirements (http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/topics/detail/7f6f03825f75fdb71701f7ad9f68cbf4d8ab3bca)

 FFXIV on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/39210/)

 FFXIV (Demo) on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/312060/)

 FFXIV (Demo) on PS4 (https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-us/games/final-fantasy-xiv-a-realm-reborn-free-trial/cid=UP0082-CUSA00288_00-C000060000000000)

game is fucking fantastic and if you have a single weeb bone in your body you're missing out if you don't give this game a shot. I'm someone who never played an mmo before, bc blah blah antisocial and monthly fees and whatever. trust me the game is not some user-unfriendly shitshow like you might think. it's even very easy for loner weebs to play thru. and the price thing isn't much of an issue since the game itself is very cheap and you get 6 weeks free including the demo. very affordable considering your getting a fuckton of content.

I'm Ydaine Aribalti on Hyperion btw

No

More specifically: If it wasn't $15 a month, I would. But a subfee for an MMO is just "no" territory for me. Which is a shame, as I enjoyed the beta for 2.0 when they did it.

But it doesn't matter since I can't play when you guys do anyway.

Btw, you can pre-create your character design in the Benchmark client while waiting for the game to install.

Ok, just got home and loaded up FFXIV.  Looks like I bought it but never installed it or played it so I still have the free month that the retail Realm Reborn comes with.  I lost my SE account from the one time I tried to play FFXI years ago, so I made a new one and it went fine I think.  I'm logged into the launcher and it's downloading it now.  Gonna take a shower and see if it's done when I come back.

So I just gotta make a character, join hyperion and then I can find you all?  Are there like different starting points at different parts of the world?  Where should I start to find everyone?

Made a character and did the intro.  Got to a city in the desert and got control of my character at 8:57pm PST and there was a message that maintenance was starting at 9:00pm PST and to log out before then so I logged out because the last thing I want to do is get kicked out and have to sit through the intro again.  I guess I'll get back to it tomorrow since maintenance will be for the rest of the night?

yeah maintenance will be all night. you don't have to worry about doing content over again; any time you log out or are disconnected you will be exactly where you left off when you reconnect.

if you heard someone running around and screaming about how everyone was going to die, that was me. I'll be back on tomorrow.

Or can I just buy Realm Reborn for PS4?
Heavensward has content you won't reach just yet, so there's no point in buying it right away.
I kind of answered this question in Queen's recent FFXIV thread (http://www.thebore.com/forum/index.php?topic=44653.0).

Is FFXIV better to play on PC or PS4?  I'd assume PC with a PS4 controller + kb for typing chat?

Also, I own FFXIV on PC, but not Heavensword.  Just Realm Reborn.  Can I play through the main story with this or does Heavensword add really useful game things that would make the main story more enjoyable?
It probably doesn't matter, but boils down to personal preferences. If you have a very good computer, why not just play on PC for the best graphics? Or just stick with console, either is fine.

There are shittons of MSQs to do before you can access the Heavensword content, so there's little point in buying it right away. You need to be level 50, but also have completed tons of quests to access it. So once you reach level 50, you still have tons of quests (MSQs up until patch 2.55) to do unlock Ishgard. However, I would suggest you buy it right before you hit level 50, since that's the level cap of the game until you have Heavensward. You wanna keep earning XP once you hit 50. At least I believe this is how it works. So if you hit level 50 without the expansion, you won't earn any XP from killing mobs/doing quests. I'm sure someone else can confirm/deny this if I'm wrong. Also, you get to play Au'Ra from the start, if you want that.

Did the starting quest to explore the town.  Then needed to be lvl.4 for the next one so I ran outside and fought monsters which was pretty boring solo with only 1 attack.  Then I accidently triggered mouse mode while going through the menus and my quickbar turned into a diablo style keyboard bar so I couldn't use my controller and it took me like 20 minutes of going through the ton of menus to figure out what I accidently changed and changed it back.  Hit lvl.4 and I'm off to the next quest.

When does the combat get normal non-mmo rpg fun?  Because attack -> enemy attacks -> attack -> enemy attacks is pretty boring even with a couple of skills.  Also at what point can I just join a party with you guys and do fun things?  Also, as someone who doesn't play MMOs, the UI has like a million things on screen.  It's a bit overwhelming.

XIV is a WoW-style MMO. It's a lot of solo leveling mixed in with a dungeon / primal every couple levels.

That said, sub 30 most classes are a snoozefest, especially sub 10/15. Once you unlock your job, things get interesting.

NIN at 60 is about 10x more complicated than just about every DPS spec in WoW. There's at least 25 or so abilities in your rotation. The end game content in XIV isn't nearly as interesting as WoW's to me, but I'd much rather play NIN than most WoW classes.

Thanks for the info!  So it sounds like after lvl.10/15 when I get a job the combat will get more interesting.  Cool.  Yeah I'm looking forward to the exploration/questing too.  I just need to get a handle on these controls cause it's kind of a lot to take in at first.

A fair warning is that Gladiator is both the easiest tank class to pick up, but also never really gets complex at all. You'll have a 3 button active rotation all the way up to level 50, with lots of defensive cooldowns. Marauder gets more involved later, with different attacks applying different debuffs on the thing you're tanking.

I'm Onix Sunblade, and SpeedStats is Asha Sunblade, both of us were already on Hyperion~

Played 3-4 hours and got to lvl.10, what level can I join you guys in combat?  I could see you guys talking but I had no idea how to find anyone.

So my experience as first time mmo, it seems sorta...generic/plain so far?  Like you can sorta explore, but unlike single player rpgs where you get rewarded for exploring by finding chests with cool loot...I haven't seen any chests in the game?  So basically exploring out I get to areas with level locked quests and fight some monsters until they get too high level and then there's nothing to do.  Fighting monsters or taking quests below your level basically gives jack shit xp, so there's not much to do besides just the next main quest at your level.  The fates have been a mix, there was one early on that was like a boss fight vs 1 strong enemy and that was a lot of fun.  But all the rest I've run into are just "keep beating down enemies below your level for 8 minutes" which is crazy boring so I leave after a bit and get the xp/gil.  The story so far is kinda boring?  Like a bunch of uninteresting delivery quests and people are amazed when you beat up like lvl.10 enemies "omg you are the chosen one so strong!!  :lol" and the story is all chosen one, go find the crystals, pretty standard tropey stuff.  Not getting why people say FFXIV is "real FF" unless they mean like FF1 or something.  The graphics/art designs is also a bit plain compared to single player FFs/rpgs so far.  Looks very plain MMO-ish.

Anyhow, haven't done "dungeons" yet, haven't done the classes stuff yet (just hit lvl.10), haven't teamed up and played with other human beings in a party vs enemies, so all these things hopefully will be rad and this was just a slow start.  Will stick with it though, because I want to give MMOs a real shot since people really like FFXIV.

A fair warning is that Gladiator is both the easiest tank class to pick up, but also never really gets complex at all. You'll have a 3 button active rotation all the way up to level 50, with lots of defensive cooldowns. Well that sucks.  Can I at least pick an interesting job to add more complexity?  Don't really want start over and grind through this intro stuff again with a different class.

Stick to it for now while you're learning the ropes. When you reach level 10 and do the corresponding class quest, you gain the ability to swap to other classes by simply equipping another weapon, once you unlock them at their guilds. You visit the other cities and get their classes unlocked once you reach the level 15 story quests.

The game has an exp bonus system where any subsequent clases you level get a boost, making them not take as long to build up.

I mentioned it before, but the game has a ton of lower quests that aren't very interesting or worth doing if your current level is too high above them. Only bother with the ones that have the Realm Reborn logo or ones with a + icon. The former are the main story, while the latter unlock stuff (features, dungeons, etc).

you'll find plenty of reasons to explore the maps as you progress. fates and leves will take you all over if you're grinding exp (which you shouldn't do until you're leveling a second class; the main story gives you enough exp for your first class), but you'll also be running everywhere if you start playing a gathering class.

you'll start unlocking dungeons shortly after you start riding airships. keep in mind this game has tons of content, that unlocks as you play the game, including stuff you can't access until you beat the 2.0 story. there's crafting and gathering classes, daily quests and roulettes, multiplayer, the gold saucer, house building, chocobo racing, triple triad, GLAMOUR, etc etc etc. this is a huge game and it'll be a long long time before you exhaust all the content.

as for the story, yes it will get more interesting soon, although some of the level 20 story quests have the worst fetch questing bullshit ever. like pretty much everything else in the game, it gets better and better the further you go.

and as for it not feeling like an ff game, just you wait :) there'll be so many fun references, homages,  and cameos that you will flip out if you know your series history.

Wait, 1.0 had its own story?  I'll watch that later.

But why aren't there treasure chests?  It's kinda like Diablo without chests, so far there's no loot in the game, monsters just drop like meat and the only loot is from quest rewards.  I love finding chests with a new piece of equip or weapon in rpgs.

lmao it's an mmo. you draw for items after beating bosses in dungeons. you can also craft gear, and the postgame is filled with content that gives you all sorts of unique currencies that can then be used to purchase unique items.

also if you're stuck on treasure hunts, gathering classes can find treasure maps that lead you to chests guarded by powerful monsters, and some might even do more than just give you cool treasure...

Interesting, so 2.0 is literally FFXIV-2 and the sequel to 1.0?  So 1.0's story is canon?

yes it absolutely is. 2.0 is a direct sequel. the story even changes a little if you transferred over a 1.0 character.

I'm curious what you think feels similar to FFXII?  Not getting XII vibes.

So was the world map different in 1.0 because I thought the reason everything is kinda wastleland is because Bahamut raging in the Calamity.  So if 1.0 was before that I'd expect the world to be more thriving.

Hyperion all full  :'(

Also, what does it mean that it's a Legacy server?

The maps were all different, yes. It wasn't really any more lush in 1.0. But all the environments were just small section copy/pasted over and over so I guess it's hard to judge.

Anymore it doesn't mean anything. At launch of 2.0, Legacy servers were servers that hosted old 1.0 characters and any new 2.0 characters. Other servers were "New Character" servers and 1.0 characters couldn't transfer there. I'm pretty sure at this point all the restrictions on transfers are removed.

Zones. Blue dotted lines for each zone. Large cities. Takes the basics of FFXII and expands it. Hunts. The battle system. The Yoshida character designs. The aesthetic. Of course, a lot of this is due to the fact that FFXII borrowed a lot from FFXI and FFXIVARR has borrowed from FFXII AND XI. You warp around via Crystal. It even has monster chains.

The latter stuff in 2.0 is some really really cool heavy Final Fantasy shit. Heavensward's middle section has the most Final Fantasy scenario I've played in probably a decade.

Also Bebpo, there's value in leveling classes to 15/30 for a number of reasons. Most of the jobs require you to have leveled other classes to 15 and you can cross class skill some useful stuff from other classes. I'm sure GLD has something critical for the other tanks.
