Title: What topics do you tend to special fellow out on?
Post by: tiesto on December 29, 2016, 01:56:40 AM
So, we all have those topics where, when prompted, we'll special fellow out and go into wayyyy too much detail on. What are yours? My two things that I'll special fellow out on if conversation steers that way:

-Electronic music genres. I get super micro-specific about these things. "No, that's not future house, it's post-2007 Romanian deep tech house!"
-NES memory mappers. For some reason I can tell people, when they talk about various NES games, what memory mapper chip they used. Castlevania 3 you say? That's an MMC5. StarTropics? One of the only games to use the MMC6, which was an MMC3 with an extra battery backup. Punch Out? Only game to use the MMC2. VRC7? Hell yeah I just bought the Lagrange Point soundtrack on vinyl!

DC Comics. I know way more about that universe, especially the last 10 years, than I probably should. Don't get me started on anything Tim Drake related.

Pokémon. IVs and EVs were made for sperging.

I know like the entire Multiverse arc from Crisis on Infinite Earths through Convergence off the top of my head. And like Batman's from Knighfall forward. And Superman from his death.

Also for Star Trek. Buffy/Angel. And probably a bunch of other stuff I shouldn't.

I can't do Marvel's at all, those crossovers are such a mess. Only series like Exiles or Runaways or something.

This same thing applies to like what I like to call "real world canon" which I've been thinking about compiling somewhere outside my head for future generations. The Great War is my favorite crossover, World War II was just like everybody trying to overdo the first one imo.

Sounds like the kind of thing I'd read in Discogs' release edit summaries. Got into the habit of submitting releases there but since I dislike genre tagging music I usually use genre fields others have submitted.

There was a torrent out there that had every DC Comic between Crisis and Flashpoint organized and numbered in story-chronological order. Find it, download it and read the entire thing.

Problem solved. :success

Podcasts. I'll often make references to them in conversations and then realize the person has no frame of reference for them. Then if you try to explain to them how great they are and make some recommendations you can slowly see their eyes glaze over as they listen to you.

Nothing

Unless you are a hot girl, nobody really gives a fuck about what you have to say on the internet unless it's something to be used against you.  Exception being autistic slap fights where the goal is to see who is the best fisker and fuck that shit.

Conversely if you are a hot girl you could write something as mundane as "I had a sandwich for lunch" and get dozens of likes.

I know people thought I was joking about this but I know this little shop in china town that makes 3$ sandwiches.  I talk about them a lot.  Its one of the few things that is very special in my life.

Videogames with a focus on rpgs.

I guess Japan/Japanese culture a little.  I enjoy a lot of stuff, but these days I'm not like super super into i.e. I can talk for hours and hours and never stop about any subject besides videogames.  Fuck man, I've been playing them for 30 years now, you think I'd get over it, but I still find videogames and game industry stuff fun and fascinating.

In terms of sheer accomplishments and reign I don't think anyone comes close to Jaehaerys I, but my heart says Aegon V too, for the same reasons. Top 5 most interesting characters in all of ASOIF.

If only he had dragons...

Even porn dicks.

For example I really want a $3 sandwich.

So now I remember something I sperged out a few months ago on. Went to Electric Zoo and saw Porter Robinson play, he is a big weeaboo so his visuals were a ton of anime characters and giant robots and things that looked like something out of SotC or a Miyazaki film. In one scene a message was being typed out, and the font used was the same font used in all Square's 16 bit RPGs (I'm sure it was deliberate). I was talking with some fellow fans of Porter and then just sperged out and went on and on about the font :P

spoiler (click to show/hide)
they were definitely rolling and probably thought I was too so no harm, no foul

Hyoushi is not bullshitting. After the Fukushima disaster we were all collectively like, “this seems bad” and then Hyoushi came in and started writing 800 word interesting posts explaining in detail how nuclear power works and what specifically was happening in the reactor and what the fallout would be. It was amazing. We were like, “bro, are you a nuclear engineer?” and he just shrugged it off like it was a normal hobby.

He's not kidding about aviation, either. He showed up in Osaka with an AR-equipped app which would use GPS and air traffic information to tell him what any plane in nearby airspace was doing, and where it was going or from where it had come. Now I own the app, too.
