Btw qte presses are borked in 360 version of II. So the timing is fine but for some reason certain stuff is hard to register. But I agree.

Ps3 in general seems to be a ghost town now a days. I loaded up GTA5 and there was barely anyone playing the online mode. :lol :'(

its on X1 back compat and runs really well

Shenmue already had quick save. In I its a soft save; In II you can hard save everywhere.

Thanks, I might take you up on that. I don't want to dislike the game considering how ahead of the curve and important it is for the game industry but something about it just doesn't click for me.

I've got my OG Dreamcast with a copy of the game along with Shenmue 2 for Xbox so I'm in good position to play the series.

I guess the super slow pace and the fact there seemingly is a bunch to explore but nothing really there. I'm pretty thorough in games so it was pretty annoying being meticulous with nothing to show for it, lol.

I played and beat the game when it first came out but I have a hard time getting back to it. Maybe I should just stick with 2 since I've only played a couple of hours of it at most. I hear that's a much faster game.

What do you think?

Post by: Himu on January 09, 2017, 08:50:43 PM: II is a much faster game but the classic Shenmue slow burn is there. How much do you like 70's/80's Hong Kong Kung fu films like Drunken Master or Police Story? Shenmue II is that, but in game form.

There is a lot there in Shenmue when you explore but it doesn't use the same rule sets of other games of its type. For instance, in I there is no dialogue tree so you can only ask what or where or who something is depending on the status of the story. But when you're not looking for something Ryo will talk to people about their current life, and you can see how their lives are going as the game progresses. It's done in two modes: 1. Quest mode (asks questions related to quest) and 2. Exploration more (asks questions based on the locale and Npcs lives. There is a surprisingly amount of depth and stuff to be found in I but it's really laid back. The stuff is there to provide a setting and locale, and not to be a playground for the player to have wish fulfillment like other games do. So it depends on how much you enjoy the story and characters.

I suggest playing the DC version of II but IIX is still good. Expect bugs on 360 though. If you want to play the DC version you just can arrr it.

Im going hate play thru both games. Ive beaten both, Shenmue 2 on OG Xbox in like.....2005ish and Shenmue 1 in 2008. Shenmue 2 at the time was fun. Shenmue 1 felt like a really really dragged out tech demo.

L.A. Noire in my mind is the successor to the investigation styled gameplay. I don't think any newcomers to Shenmue are gonna play it and understand what merit it had in a point of time.

The English voice acting is up there for being terrible. It was outdated regarding that compared to MGS1 or Legacy of Kain.

I tried playing Shen Mue 2 again a few years ago. Found that it's a better experience than a game.

I tried, man. I really did. I tried to get into those games but found that they pretty much made good sleep-inducers.

Yakuza does it better. It's too bad that Sega didn't just let Yu Suzuki team up with the Yakuza devs to make the new Shen Mue.
