McTiernan was (still is ?) a great action director but it's a serviceable ad with a decent script. The amount of flair is fairly modest, the production value isn't that high either and I suspect no one would care to the point of shot by shot analysis if a good-but-unknown ad director signed it. Most of the film is a fucking cat playing with a red dot on a set between the legs of a couple stand ins : "Wow still the best in the action business !".

That said when you take a game like the Division and squint your eyes and ignore all the crap it is actually a great rendition of New York with good gunplay. I think maybe the same could be said for their other commodities likes Far Cry and Ass Creed, which personally I cant get into at all.

So I think this might be all right if you ignore 90% of whats there and only come for the junglescape and some coop shootbang.

The release date couldn't come at a worst time though. :lol Same with For Honor. Feb-April is going to be a bloodbath

Outside of being able to play with friends, and to the game's credit it is fun with 2 or 3 buddies, there is no single aspect that really stands or or is even that good. Lots of bugs and glitches. The gunplay isn't great. The driving is awful. The physics, lol. The ability to hide and move bodies should be standard for a game like this but it is noticeably absent here. That alone is a huge detriment to playing stealthily. Everything about it feels unfocused; Jack of all trades, master of none. Like what is the point of the driveable trackers and other goofy shit in a game like this? Feels like a waste of dev time when the core gameplay could have used more work.

I imagine this big map and coop with Ground Zeroes/MGSV smooth gameplay and it could be amazing. Instead we got this pseudo GTA thing and it just doesn't work IMO.

Yeah. If you asked me if it was a good game, I'd say no. At the same time I had a lot of fun with it.

It is going to be a divisive game, for sure.

Not necessarily that any element of what I was doing was super fun or well designed. More like this was a splinter cell take on GTA online. And that's still a somewhat unique thing at this point relative to other games.

One of my friends tried it out and didn't like it at all. He said it's like they stapled a bunch of GTA shit onto Bolivia. I like it for exactly that reason.

In the PS2 era, I loved GTA III, but when LucasArts' Mercenaries came out, it was a revelation. There were so many interesting things done right in it, despite how much it cribbed from the then-limited number of open-world games. They'd taken most of it from GTA III, but they also used the faction and camouflage car mechanic from GTA II. They dropped the lock-on-to-shoot, and added a suspenseful sound and visual filter when the player character was nearing death. By placing it in a war zone, the emphasis changed dramatically. I hoped it would become the next big franchise but then, between EA and Pandemic, they REALLY screwed the pooch with its sequel.

What I'm feeling here is that I finally got the sequel I wanted: it's a drive-here-and-shoot-that-guy model, but they've cribbed all kinds of fun stuff from other games. The weapon-crafting, loadout revisions, character appearance customization, as well as all the Perk progression from other popular online shooters. The drone / binocular combination for doing the titular recon is fun on its own. Driving feels pretty good for heavy cars on dirt roads.

I don't understand your connection between FO4 and Wildlands; is it the open-world nature of it, or the piecemeal weaponry and shooting?

Or is it that I place too much emphasis on first-person vs. third person?

Yeah, I can see how Far Cry is close to Wildlands in tone. Military-ish. Find a base: destroy a base, increase map. My personal hard line between TPS/FPS is still there though. Blood Dragons made me pukey.

It has some good ideas in regards to sandboxing, and feels like it should really knock the experience of Phantom Pain out of the park. But going by the open beta they did, yeah. That's pretty much it.

The marking system is wonky and the sync-shot system was wonky in solo play. If the stealth was actually good and you eliminating your target wasn't an auto-game-over (and just had you shift gears. IIRC Phantom Pain does this with a few missions where if you forget your objective pick-up you can still proceed through the mission as if nothing happened) it'd have been alright.

My biggest complaint from the open beta was the completely AWFUL Helicopter controls. I'm playing on a keyboard so the whole "dive-bomb the helicopter to make it get forward momentum" just didn't do anything for me.

It's an enjoyable co-op experience that is fun explicitly because of the co-op. I don't like the tone. I don't like the banter of the characters. I don't like the faux gravitas. I don't even like a lot of the controls.

But its fun to roll around with a few friends and experience the game. I wish the game was more silly. Like a game like Battlefield Bad Company would be perfect if it was in this engine and had its sense of fun and tone from that game.

I wonder if they will add a battle royale mode. Seems like a missed opportunity if they don't.

It's quite fun in co-op. It's weird. There is a lot of shit to criticize if I put on my analytical hat.

But its still really fun when playing with friends. Surprisingly so.

Ubisoft has kinda been delivering this gen.
