So like how will people look back on this thing? I've seen posts claiming it's a great console like the Dreamcast, but I'm not sure how even a Nintendo fan thinks that. Good games I'm sure, but nothing that seemed to be Nintendo's A game. No new big Mario, Zelda, Metriod, and such. Ports and seemingly B level efforts. Sure new stuff like Splatoon, but I bet it's sequel will live on longer.

At the end of the day it seems to be thier weakest console.

Not even fucking close to the Dreamcast. What a joke.

I think the Switch will probably do better than the Wii U. I think people actually understand what the system is and it's starting off with an actual new Mario and the better version(definite) of a new Zelda. The Wii U will also have some of it's better games ported to the Switch.

The Virtual Boy was their weakest console.

There's no doubt that the Wii U was a sales bomb.  I found little to no reason to want one for the first year and half or so after release.  But 2014 was a good year for the system and it ended up getting enough games to get me to buy one.  I ended up with:

New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Luigi U
Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario Maker
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Super Smash Bros. For Wii U
Mario Kart 8
Hyrule Warriors
NES Remix
Splatoon
Bayonetta 2 w/Bayonetta
The Wonderful 101
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE
Devil's Third (lol purchase)
Tekken Tag Tournament 2
Call Of Duty Black Ops II
Fast Racing NEO (digital)
Mighty Switch Force Hyper Drive Edition (digital)
Shantae And The Pirate's Curse (digital)

(I think that's everything)

And that's a decent number of titles.  I can also say that I had more fun with this system than I did with the N64 and the Wii.  I also own more games for it than I do for the N64.

But let's break this list down.  First, removing the multiplatform releases:

New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Luigi U
Super Mario 3D World
Mario Kart 8
Super Mario Maker
Super Smash Bros. For Wii U
NES Remix
Splatoon
Bayonetta 2
The Wonderful 101
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE
Devil's Third (lol purchase)
Fast Racing NEO (digital)

And now removing the games with 3DS versions/ports:

New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Luigi U
Mario Kart 8
Super Mario 3D World
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Splatoon
Bayonetta 2
The Wonderful 101
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE
Devil's Third (lol purchase)
Fast Racing NEO (digital)

And then taking out the games getting Switch ports.  I'm putting Splatoon here since 2 is Splatoon Championship Ediition.

New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Luigi U
Super Mario 3D World
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Bayonetta 2
The Wonderful 101
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE
Devil's Third (lol purchase)

...And that doesn't leave too much to look back on.  Really for me, what still stands out here is Bayonetta 2.  I pretty much bought the system for this game, Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart 8, and Smash.  Out of those four games, two of them also ended up on 3DS and one of them is coming to the Switch (and we know Smash will follow at some point).  I could sell off the system now and really wouldn't care much, but have decided to hold onto it for now since I can see some games getting pretty valuable later on.  There's still a couple of games I wouldn't mind picking up for it, too.

That said...if Bayonetta 2 gets ported to the Switch, this thing is out the door.  :doge

Not even fucking close to the Dreamcast. What a joke.

Yeah, that's just absurd.   :lol  Now, I could cherry pick ports and multi-platform releases to whittle down my list of DC games, but it would still be much bigger and better than the Wii U offerings.

I think the Switch will probably do better than the Wii U. I think people actually understand what the system is and it's starting off with an actual new Mario and the better version(definite) of a new Zelda. The Wii U will also have some of it's better games ported to the Switch.

I think it's pretty much guaranteed that the Switch will blow the Wii U out of the water.  But when I look at it, I just see the Switch as Wii U Mark 2.

The Wonderful 101!  Forgot I owned that.  Still need to play it.  :-[

I still want to get:

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
Mario Tennis Ultra Smash
Yoshi Wooly World

Might get:

NES Remix 2
Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge (you can get it for like $7 new now)

Want to see if I can get them on the Nintendo-published titles cheap, but that's harder to do with those titles.

I realized I never sold off my physical Wii U games.  I realized I held onto them because I thought they would go up in price like the Gamecube but given how Nintendo is porting so many games to the Switch that might not be the case.  I'll hang onto them for a few more years and see where they stand.

Got a 3DO because it was absurdly popular in Saudi  :'(
what region were you for games? because if it was Yurop, ouch...brutal, thing only had like 30-40 EU releases half of which were FMV games or like PC ports like Alone in the Dark

also, i tried to look it up but best i could find was that the saudi government didn't care enough to enforce much if any censorship on titles back then and still doesn't really except for some high profile stuff

Most of the best Switch games besides Mario and Zelda are Wii U ports.

Honestly they should've just waited until the Switch was ready.

Yeah I'm sure going five years without a home console would have worked well.

Like it or not, the fact the Wii U existed caused them to develop and release these games the first time, hence their quick turnaround into becoming Switch ports. Otherwise, for instance, Retro would still be two years away from releasing Tropical Freeze on Switch.

History had to happen as it did or we wouldn't be at this point. Something something ugly duckling.

Hrm, I'm still contemplating getting it for the BC. Should be kinda cheap now, used off ebay or whatevs.

Does anyone know whether the Wii->WiiU copy mechanism still works? And, how's the vWii? Good enough to run homebrewchannel plus some ISO launch GUI like on the old Wii? No way I'm gonna dig out my disks from wherever I stashed them. External HDD with isos or bust.

Post by: nachobro on July 03, 2018, 09:51:54 AM
Dunno if the copy still works, but vWii is solid on Wii U and you can use Wii Backup Manager to get games onto a HDD. There's also ways to play most GC games on vWii too.

getting games isn't as easy as it used to be, but otherwise wii u hacking is easy as hell. just had to buy brain age ds from the eshop and had the whole thing done in less than 30min
Title: Re: Wii U officially officially dead
Post by: demi on July 03, 2018, 10:45:32 AM
What do you mean getting games? Like PIRACY? You have to buy Brain Age for the hack to work?
Title: Re: Wii U officially officially dead
Post by: nachobro on July 03, 2018, 11:24:07 AM
You used to be able to download games directly from Nintendo's servers for (omg) piracy reasons, now you have to find them yourself and run them through some program to make them work with the hack. I don't know much about that anymore cause I grabbed all the games I wanted a while ago.

And yeah you have to buy one of the DS games on Wii U to basically convert that game into the program that runs the hack (Haxchi). Brain Age is just the cheapest one, so everyone gets that. IIRC it's cause the hack is a DS virtual console exploit, so you need a purchased DS game on the home screen to make it work.
Title: Re: Wii U officially officially dead
Post by: demi on July 03, 2018, 11:45:02 AM
Ok, so this only applies to WiiU? I bought all the WiiU games worth owning already.

Do I need to buy Brain Age to run the exploits for Wii games? I just want to move over all my Wii hacks / backup loader etc for my Wii games.
Title: Re: Wii U officially officially dead
Post by: nachobro on July 03, 2018, 12:10:57 PM
If you just want to hack the Wii mode only, you don't need Haxchi (I think)

Should just be able to use this guide https://wiiu.hacks.guide/vwii-modding.html

It will have you install Homebrew Channel for Wii U and then for Wii mode and then you should be set.
