Title: So, Oroville Dam...
Post by: Olivia Wilde Homo on February 12, 2017, 09:43:33 PM
It's a giant dam in California that is about to burst, maybe.

They're evacuating the Butte Country Jail. I had heard that the mudslides weren't as drastic as feared, but still a lot of precautions being taken.

It should be noted that the dam itself is not at risk of collapse (as far as anyone knows), the main spillway which controls overflowing failed and now the auxiliary spillway is just dumping water into regular forest which causes a bunch of crap to accumulate.

My company operates the drinking water in the area and as you can imagine, the flooding of treatment stations/muddy water in your surface water is not good but the groundwater wells are fine. I work in the Water Quality department and when I called the PM for Oroville on Friday, he went on about how the State doesn't realistically expect to be able to control this and start repairs until Spring maybe. If the snowpack starts melting rapidly, it could get really ugly.

People should be fine but property and wildlife are going to impacted. :(

I live in Sactown so I'm within an hour or so away. A lot of friends evacuated. Not fun stuff.
Also, I live in Sactown, within an hour or so away. Pray for me. :doge

I'm glad the crisis is over. However, doesn't anyone else notice that the "emergency spillway" was just water going over the top of the dam wall?  :doge

Sacramento is heavily multicultural with a very low rate of segregation. It's diverse as fuck.

Shut the fuck up, you're destroying our narrative of how shitty and white sac-a-indo is. You might even say the evidence against sac being cali's utah is... damning, yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Himu used to tell me she was.  She's also my adopted sister so I'm obviously not attracted to her.  I only get hot and bothered for blood relations.

Sacramento is the only city I've been to where a drug store chain closes at 5 in the evening. It's a train station with a mayor and a state capitol.

Calling it diverse is technically accurate, but glosses over the larger issue in California that diversity usually goes hand in hand with "falling outside the Eye of Yuppie Sauron or the commercial interests of the landowner class." The city is markedly different during business hours and off hours.
