It won't open here in Japan for a year or two, and then all of the Japanese people will be confused as to who they're supposed to be cheering for him. Surprising to encounter racism against blacks here; you'd think they'd get it all out of their system between the Chinese and Koreans.

yea i read a synopsis, sounds like a pretty original movie
and by the sounds of it lots of praise for Peele

Movie was good, not great. That 3/4 100% RT kinda feel. It's a PG-13ish horror film like Light's Out. It's horror, but not too scary, suspenseful or violent; it's funny but not too funny; it plays more like a twilight zone movie. There's some great social commentary, especially the very first scene which is striking. Otherwise it's worth a watch, but almost matinee movie. I like Jordan Peele and hopefully he improves as he ages and writes/directs more.

Post by: mormapope on February 26, 2017, 03:01:28 AM: Saw it opening night. A lot smarter and more subdued than the trailers made it out to be. After seeing it once, you pick up on a ton if stuff you didnt notice before. Lots of dialog and character interactions become neater.

Horror parts were hilarious to me, really satirical and over the top. First hypnosis scene with Chris was incredibly sad :brazilcry

I think, just personally as a horror buff, I wanted the movie to be a little more scary/suspenseful. Like I kinda wish it either played it more straight (but subtley satirical) and went full on House of the Devil freaky shit, or it went more comedy satire and was constantly funny. It's still good though and easily recommendable. Hope it does well enough that Peele can keep directing.

$30 million opening weekend on a minuscule budget, so I think it'll do just fine.

Yeah, one thing I was wondering watching it is if the movie is scarier if you're black. I'd be surprised if the answer is yes tbh, because the reason I didn't think it was really particular scary was you can tell from earlier on and the trailers that the movie is gonna be goofy and spoof/satire, so for me it was hard to get scared or be in suspense too much because I knew whatever was happening was gonna be so over the top it's silly. Again, I think if it played it more straight like House of the Devil it could have been freaky as hell and socially relevant.

So the film is waaaaaay smarter than most genre movies, but its not at all pretentious. And Jordan Peele has an amazingly strong and confident sense of direction for a guy who's never made a movie before. Its obvious that he's got some pristine, classical influences (Polanski, De Palma), which is unusual for a guy who didn't really live through that era. I guess I shouldn't be so surprised about Peele's thriller bona fides, because it wouldn't be the first time that he's shown such genre dexterity.
