When I was a freshman in college, I met someone who had the whole series on VHS, we used to watch them all the time, it was one of the first anime series I really got into. Love that theme song!

Same here, only I was that guy who had all the tapes on VHS. Ranma is what fucked me up for life really got me into manga and anime. The comics had been coming out in English for a year or so before I started reading them in 1992. I couldn't get enough and went absolutely batshit insane when Viz announced the first VHS releases- they oddly released the first episodes of the TV series from the late 80s and then the first OVAs from the 90s very close to each other. Huge difference in animation quality and style, plus the OVA had characters in it that wouldn't be seen in the English-translated manga for years. :lol
Ranma was kind of a big deal for a little bit there- the comics got pretty popular and then the TV series and the second game for the SNES came out around the same time.
Never did finish reading the series and really need to. I kept buying the English releases as they came out and stopped when I went to live in Japan in 2005. It's kind of crazy to think that they still weren't done releasing it 15 years after they started, but that's how damn slow Viz releases were (still are?).
A group of fans had even gotten together and released all the untranslated chapters in English in the early 2000s online. :lol :dizzy

Although as the years have gone by, I find more of a fondness for Urusei Yatsura. Would also like to read all of that one day. Viz stopped releasing them in English in the early 2000s since it wasn't as popular as Ranma was. :-\

She was once quoted as saying that the stuff she does is for each new generation of readers. I get what she means- I loved Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Ranma, and One-Pound Gospel, but didn't get into Inu-Yasha as much and Rin-Ne is just kind of there.
I wish she'd release more comedy-focused stuff again.

I missed out on those days, but I do remember when anime DVDs were 3-4 episodes for $30. Then they started doing the series collections for about $80 and it blew my mind.

I used to be really into Sailor Moon, because I found it through some Tumblr blog filled with neat anime gifs, back in like 2011 or something. Thought it looked cute with nice colors/outfits, and the animated faces were hilarious.

Not just Japan, too. HK was notorious for that and for films even. Reel storage for original and intermediate elements is a pain (and a cost) and that can quickly add up for any company with a sizeable catalogue.
Also yeah, Project Eden is one of the classics and I always thought it was fairly notable as a pre-Akira SF anime movie with gorgeous animation. Wouldn't be suprised Peter Chung took a lot from it (one episode of Aeon Flux even lifts wholesale the plot from OAV Affair on Nolandia).

I loved the look and action of that Giant Robo anime revival, but IIRC it took FOREVER for the final episode to come out, and then it was completely incoherent. Or it may have simply been that I didn't re-watch the series before watching the long-awaited final episode?

Oh I don't know. The last two episodes do throw out a lot of "oh mysterious!" crap with the inner workings of Big Fire, but I don't remember them being hard to follow. Introducing plenty of characters with little payoff because they are clearly for the next chapter that never happen isn't a great idea, but the core story is concluded and pretty great.
To me, Giant Robo is a masterpiece. One of the few anime that you could really say is an epic in scale. I thought the story is really well told and pretty layerd for something called Giant Robo. Then again I really like and relate to father son themes and the main conflict is all about that. It does have some really cool characters though and yeah the look of the show is ace.
But yeah I also watched it years after it was completed.

Man I love Yu Yu Hakusho, but I just can't keep watching after the Dark Tournament arc. It's not it's fault, as few shonen maintain a the same level of quality after it's first major arc.
The show does sorta lose a bit of its sheen after the Dark Tournament, and then corrodes into crap by the Three Kings arc. But everything up to the Dark Tournament is ace.

I'm a bit too young to remember the Harmony Gold days myself, but my dad is a huge Robotech/Macross fan. The stories he tells me, you'd think HG killed his dog or something. :lol
DYRL is such a gorgeous film and it’s easily one of my favorite anime movies. We all don’t have to wait long for Harmony Gold to go away, though. They’re losing the rights to the Macross license (as well as MOSPEADA and Southern Cross) in March of 2021.

Kawajiri is a god man. He knows how to stradle that line of tropey/campy but still good. Partly because he never commits fully to stereotypes or he'll layer in a nice message under it. In a better world we got that ninja scroll 2 based on that demo reel that leaked awhile back.

Yeah he did Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and a Highlander adaptation along with a string of ovas and other works. I love most if not all of his work as director. Very stylish director without being completely hollow.

I think he mainly storyboards now which is a damn shame but not too surprising. A lot of these guys that were killing it in the video/ova market in the 80s and 90s ended up this way. I think he's been tied to some kind of Vampire Hunter D tv show that random companies have been trying to get off the ground for years now.

I’d kill for a blu ray release of the X Movie. It’s such a cool looking and well animated movie. Terrible cliff notes version of a 90s as fuck edgy girls manga though. Still it looks great and the tv show and really no other Clamp anime has come as close to capturing that Clamp art.

Otherwise I guess here is a better place than the TV how thread but I've been binging the JoJo Stardust Crusaders series. I was familiar with the story and the OAV but I don't remember there was so much shit eating jokes. :lol
I think the art style and animation is not bad despite the fact you can feel the usual budget, cost saving seams. Having Walk like and Egyptian as the closer (for part of it anyway) was spot on.
I love it but I can see why some people think it's a bit of a slog with its Stand of the Week format. They could probably have cut back on half a dozen of them, easy, with no real loss.
I may skip Phantom Blood because I've seen an OAV for that too (IIRC) but backtrack to Battle Tendency.

Battle Tendency is goofy and not always the good kind. The Pillar Men are not super interesting and the pacing & story is really uneven, those plot beats feel really loose. Like Santana is a disciple / youngling, ok but why ? Why is he in Mexico while all the others are in Rome in a single fresco ? What do the Pillar Boys do for a whole month ? Are their vampire underlings newly turned or are they supposed to be zombies from the Roman Empire ? In fact, is it even made clear why they decided to go in that pillar 2000 years ago after living for 10000 ?
I guess Stardust Crusaders spoiled me but that whole trip along some Silk Road is a really strong backbone and there's a real sense of purpose, urgency and adventure all throughout.
Joseph is great tho. Those insane 4D chess asspulls are a joy (but ultimately... The final defeat of Kars is underwhelming).

I feel Phantom Blood is the weakest in the series (at least first three of the four so far I've read/seen) because it's an entirely different style/story than the later entries. Phantom Blood is basically torture porn of Jonathan until he gets Hamon and then he kicks Dio's ass (yay!). It has the horror elements that Jojo's entire series gets but here it's more... dreadful? Less played for comedy, which isn't a bad thing but you notice it as the series goes on that Araki changes a lot.
I can see why you'd dislike Battle Tendency but that's where the series sort of picked me up (beyond Dio's "I'VE REJECTED MY HUMANITY JOJO!" and Zapaelli's hamon demonstrations in Phantom Blood) even if the Pillar Men in retrospective kind of fall flat.
We get more information on Hamon (which is sadly dropped next part/Stardust Crusaders for stands), see the organization for that (in a way), get bigger/better battles. Joseph gets tension with the "biological clock"/poison put in him.
The nazi's were a misstep, I feel. Even if the "GERMAN ENGINEERING IS BEST!!!!" character was amazing IMO for the sheer ludicrousness.
A lot of the fanbase feel people should just skip the first two parts (especially Phantom Blood!) and go straight to Stardust Crusaders, but I disagree. The first two arcs each have their strengths and Joseph is (IMO) one of the better "Jojo's" if only because he's a hotblooded ass. Jotaro is similar, but can be a complete asshole, while Joseph cares about people like Jonathan but doesn't have the "gentlemen's agreement" that Jonathan was raised by.
The biggest disappointment though is dropping Hamon for Stands. A lot of the fanbase enjoys "Stands of the Week"/chapter in the manga and that's fine and all but I really miss Hamon and "oh I can't breath/calm down so I can't use this power" tension.
But Araki has grown over time. The nazi's a little less... "glorified?" in later entries and transphobia and the like is dropped because Araki sees the fanbase/diversity and sees what bothers folks and agrees/grows. (Not sure if that's making sense) Which is more than can be said for certain manga artists (*ahem*Toriyama...) in their work.
Edit: IIRC, Lisa Lisa is better written in the manga (but still has a sparse history) than the anime. The anime kind of glosses over her for the Joseph/Kars battle(s)

Phantom Blood is more of a vampire/horror tale, really, as far as I remember. The boat ending and DIO has shades of Ninja Scroll in my memories.
I don't know if there was a ton more to do with vampires and Hamon. The whole Nazi involvement looks like typical Japanese aloofness / distance to the issue. The neutral tone is a bit weird when it opens on Stroheim just gleefully killing prisoners for experiments.

I feel Hamon could've been what Stands are, but the vampires were totally done. The vampire's "masters"/Pillar Men were defeated, the stone-mask was smashed (and there was no backups... or was there? *mystery music*) so yeah... it was time to move to something else. But I really feel the Hamon aspect was very little explored.

The GIF obscured it a bit but you're right, another tell is that the original anime wasn't nearly as artistic with its use of shadows and crimson red (Seras' eyes), the anime instead opting for a more... #FF0000 style bright red lol.
The last time I watched the anime was summer 2005, and as a manga purist I loathed it. :lol With the passage of time, and with the knowledge that the rest of the manga was faithfully adapted, I'm hoping I can go back to it with fresher/unbiased eyes. Because it did do a couple things better than Ultimate IIRC.

Ultimate is a little sloppy, it's not a perfect adaptation. I think they had funding troubles? I know they switched animation studios a couple times but I still really glad we got it. The original 13 ep show is fun and I think I like it more now that we got ultimate. In a lot of ways it's more focused and just gets right to what you probably want/expect out of a hyperviolent vampire anime. I remember the dub being really solid too fwiw. I also think they did the entire Seras introduction/bite stuff better than Ultimate. Ultimate is just what you want if you're familiar with the goofy horny jokey vibe of the manga (and really all of Hirano's shit, you can tell dude started doing doujins. Even Drifter has this vibe).

Yeah Ultimate's production was a huge shit-show.
As an adaptation, as someone who's hyper-familiar with volumes 1-4, I'd be hard pressed telling you any differences. They even adapted what was made of The Dawn. Biggest knock on Ultimate is the varying animation quality and occasional pacing issues that are honestly fairly true to the source material as well (but IMO work a little better in manga form.)
Crispin Freeman as Alucard is definitely top-notch casting, and I was glad to see the Ultimate dub retain some of the key VA talent. The English accents, for once, and especially compared to say Jojo, are accurate and feel genuine. I even thought Integra's VA and Bayonetta's were the same for a little bit. :P
The anime's strengths that I remember definitely have to do with Seras actually getting her own plot(s), and a higher focus on blood/gore over comedy as you said.
I also remember an episode where they spend the entirety talking about Integra's sister, who (spoilers) is fake, tries to kill Integra in the last 5 mins of the episode, is promptly dusted, and it's never brought up again.

Ghost in the Shell is good if you are in the mood for a atmospheric 90s sci-fi mood piece. It can be boring. It is not very actiony. It is really just about beings questioning life in a tech heavy future. In so much that the premise I would say is cyborg cop comes across case that makes her question things, but not in a real over the top dramatic way.
It’s a beautiful movie. Well directed and looks great, but don’t expect some amazing story. I feel like when 90s fans described it as adult, what they really should have meant is that it takes itself pretty seriously.
I grew up on it so I’m bias.
The Stand Alone Complex TV shows are more easily approachable cyborg cop dramas and really good.
Can’t speak to Arise. Innocence is too boring for me.
