if this game doesn't have system shock people working on it I'd be really surprised

Feels like a natural progression from System Shock 2 in a way that Bioshock almost was, but not quite. Bioshock dropped some of the flexibility and complexity for a more streamlined, but faster-paced experience. Don't get me wrong, I really like the original Bioshock, but Prey nails the slower-paced feel of the old Looking Glass/Ion Storm games. Bioshock was also a bit more an A-to-B-to-C progression, whereas Prey [again, like those older games] puts you in a large location that branches out into other, smaller locations, and you have to figure out how to access them.

Damnit, now I'll have to buy it. I've always wanted a more true-to-original sequel. I loved the first Bioshock, but it wasn't hitting the same highs as SS2. And Bioshock Infinite is fucking garbage. Beautiful garbage, but still garbage. Like a Kardashian.

At first, I was disappointed by the ending, because it felt like nothing really got answered, but there's a scene after the credits where everything that you did in the game [actions in the main quest, how you handled the sidequests] comes into focus. I really liked the way that was handled. And even though it's kind of an open-ended ending it still felt conclusive to the story of Morgan Yu, while leaving open a pathway for the series to go moving forward.

So, I'm happy with how the game turned out.

While I really enjoyed the game, I left it not liking it as much as I initially did. Environment design wasn't as strong as I would've hoped due to the small size of the levels and constant loading stunting the experience from feeling truly interconnected. Enemy variety was disappointing and by the end of the game I ran past most combat encounters since enemies don't have any clever combat engagement variations beyond their basic routines. Even mimics and their cool shape-shifting gimmick weren't put to good use beyond a small scare here and there. I think the most disappointing of all were the characters and their lack of development; not really giving the player any opportunity to identify with anyone, comprehend their motives, or even explore the supposed rich backstory of the narrative. The lack of a strong villain, aside from an uncaring and undecipherable enemy entity, is probably its weakest moment. Also, the bugs on PC were pretty annoying. I had to fight the game from deleting my leveled-up weapons multiple times whenever I'd hit a load point, several quests were bugged and couldn't be completed, and performance was unplayable forcing me to revert my drivers back to the March release.

While that came across more negative than I intended, the game really did have moments where it felt like System Shock 3. The gun-play was pretty rock solid with multiple interesting weapons and grenades, with the recycler charge and gloo gun being pretty inventive. I thoroughly enjoyed the skill customization and felt right at home with the System Shock inspired upgrades while the typhon skill tree presented a new and fun twist. I also really enjoyed the whole material/fabrication system and it was sublime in its intelligent solution to item hoarding and inventory management. The game also did a great job of slowly introducing gameplay concepts and by the end of the game you're given complete control to maximize your character which felt pretty empowering. The ending and was also refreshingly unexpected with amazing possibilities for a sequel which left me pretty excited for the series.

I strongly recommend the game to anyone and while I hate to be reductive I'd probably describe it as a better playing and designed version of BioShock with deeper player customization but lacking the interesting characters and plot of that series.

- combat is horrible
- exploration, normally I would like that, but the space ship is so fucking generic and bland looking
- story... yeah, no.

For the record, I loved System Shock 2, liked Bioshock, hate this.

The writing is decent and the setting can be pretty interesting at times but I would not call them memorable (outside one big exception that then the game cheats in the end). I suppose that one could argue that the characters are intentionally more like set pieces given the ending but it feels they could have been more interesting with some extra work or dialogue. Talos 1 is fun to explore but doesn't feel as good as Dishonored or Deus Ex levels or as memorable as settings as the Bioshock series, is in a middle ground that feels that didn't wanted to totally compromise freedom with strength of the setting and ends with mixed results.

I liked the ending and is a pretty interesting twist, but I will not say that that the game benefits from it. I cannot a blame anybody that feels cheated, thought I also think they were building out for it. It just lacks of any meaningful impact after the original bewildering of it.

I just started the demo... how long is this demo? LOL I'm at 2 hours and it doesn't seem to be over yet.

I'm really digging it. Love the setting and exploration. I like figuring out unique ways to kill the big enemies. I encountered two of those Phantoms, one was on fire. I managed to use a combo of the stun gun and quickly throwing explosive canisters. Took em down!

I'll probably play until the demo is over and then decide to pick it up or not.

I bought the full game and played about 4 hours over the weekend. I just arrived to the GUTS which seem a little annoying! But i'm still having a lot of fun.

There's a quest to turn the robots off right after, and if you have machine mind it isn't to hard.

Was working 100 percent fine up until this point. I've seen some reports of people having the same issue around. Tried to verify game cache and now I'm reinstalling it all together. Super lame.

I fixed the Main Lift and took it back to the Lobby so I could explore some places with my new abilities and noped the fuck outta there when I saw like three MASSIVE new enemies.

Respawning enemies is kinda lame. I get why they're doing it but it discourages exploring a bit for me because I wanna feel like I've accomplished something when I clear an area out.

I didn't realize I was about to actually encounter him during one of the missions where he disables the life support in the Cargo Bay. So when I went to turn it back on and he was just there I quickly knocked him out with the disruptor pistol.

Now I'm a little bit further past that after meeting Alex and a whole lot of shit just went down so I feel like I'm nearing the end.

I finished Prey the other day. It was surprising how quickly the game wraps up. The ramp up starts then less than an hour later you're done. It made the ending sequences feel super abrupt and a little underdeveloped. It seems like there was an idea there that wasn't thoroughly explored which is unfortunate.

That being said, I REALLY enjoyed it a lot. It hits a lot of the things I love about playing games; a dense world to explore, an interesting premise, things to scrounge for, interesting ways to improve your character that wildly change the dynamic of play (those Typhon powers really completely changes how I handled combat encounters which was near). This game honestly really did feel like the thing I wanted from a sequel to Bioshock.

There wasn't any end game enemies or scenarios that really pushed what could be accomplished with various late game builds. Otherwise I liked the game a lot.

Post by: fistfulofmetal on August 30, 2017, 02:55:58 PM: Yeah. For awhile I was sticking with the human upgrades and having trouble with the Telepaths, Technopaths, Weavers, and stronger Phantoms. But then I spent points on the two psychic attacks and maxed them out. From that point forward I was pretty much able to take everything out without any issue.

The one idea that def felt the most undercooked was the Nightmare. I guess they meant for it to be a kind of Nemesis thing but it's AI was stupid and you could just hid behind a door for 2 minutes. Or just let yourself die and reload. I managed to kill it once because it got stuck on a door and another time Dahl's military bots killed it for me.

As far as the ending itself goes, I liked that all the little choices I made ended up getting referenced. I'd really like to see some kind of expansion that starts out with you at full-power and gives you enemies and scenarios that force you to make use of them.
