Context: Either in late August or early September I'm planning to go up there to visit some friends, possibly meet up with a girl that I met off of tinder & I'm now chatting with on Instagram, and of course experience New York City.
Last time I was up there it was for my high school senior trip and I only got to experience the generic "tourist stuff" in a span of 3 days.
This time I plan on getting more into the "nitty gritty". Hopefully for an entire week and possibly 2 weeks if I arrange a "working vacation" with my job. So long as I have a high speed internet connection I can do most of what my job demands of me.
I'm going to be most likely basing out of Brooklyn since I have a friend from college who lives there with his gf. Also, the girl from tinder lives there as well. :doge
Questions:
1. If I'm going to be staying for a week or possibly two weeks would it be good to get an Airbnb instead of mooching off my friend and sleeping on his couch for 7 to 14 days? We're friends but we aren't besties. Also, maybe I'll get lucky and that tinder girl will let me live with her (I HIGHLY doubt that. Especially this early in our "correspondence". Nice to think about though... :doge )
2. Is there a relatively easy way to get from Brooklyn to Manhattan and back again? I assume the subway but that's kinda dependent on where I'm actually staying in Brooklyn. Also, I assume I could get a "weekly" metro card while I'm there?
I'll think of more questions once more details start to come to light.
Also, feel free to fill me in on any neat stuff that I should experience while I'm there. Anything that's art, design, music, and food related I'm definitely down for.
-
2. Yes, the subway, and yes and yes.
It's too bad you're going to modern day NYC; 35 years ago, you could have killed a hobo for sport and no one would have cared. These days I guess you just eat a bunch of pizza or whatever.
-
Yes, to AirBnB. It's what I did upstate (outside of NYC) and it was farrrrrrr cheaper than hotels up there and NYC combined. If you can get a good deal and you aren't going to stay there everyday, it'll be fine to book a cheap place to keep your stuff in.
Also be very aware that taking cabs and the subway is expensive. So if you're trying to be cheap, plan your day(s) in certain areas that you can walk around in.
-
Yeah Airbnb, it can get reeeeally awkward having a friend stay over for more than 1-2 nights and it'll be uncomfortable for you too. Your friend's gf especially will flip her shit if you stay there longer. And I wouldn't bank on getting to stay with the tinder girl, it's too much too soon and if she hates you she'll kick you out.
Can't say anything about NY since I've never been.

Man I thought you were desperate when you drove two hours to see the one girl at 3 am after her shift

MOMA is a must-do, you'll especially like the "industrial design" section there
Whitney Museum was a nice way to spend 2 hours, plus it's right near the High Line
You can spend a whole day at each of the Brooklyn Museum, Natural History, and the Met
Cloisters is a bit out of the way
The Bronx Zoo is cool if you're into animals
For shopping, there's 5th Ave and all the stores around Rockefeller Center. World of Nintendo is a bit overrated IMO but has some cool displays (and the NES prototypes are cool)
There's a few Barcade locations (1 in St Marks, 1 in Chelsea, and of course the original in Williamsburg), definitely worth checking out if you like craft beer and retro gaming
I tend to find the mid-level food generally better in Brooklyn and Queens (the latter especially for Asian food) than Manhattan.
Do you know where in Brooklyn you're staying? Williamsburg/Greenpoint are the most convenient to Manhattan, a lot do have subway access but it could take a while.

:fbm Hey, I was at this extreme first. I just wasn't public with it.
(Of course, it's up in the air on if I go back up there)
Oh, hey Tiesto: While you're suggesting things: Things to do in the winter? Especially for someone that isn't used to the brutal cold? How much clothing would I need for a week to stay warm? :p

When in the winter are you going? Jan and Feb are when we have the coldest weather and the most snow. I'd definitely be bringing a thick jacket, sweatshirts/hoodies/sweaters - it usually doesn't go lower than 20 degrees but it's still windy as fuck.
For winter activities, well in Dec you can see the tree and all the holiday decorations, i.e. the Sak's light show. There's ice skating in front of Rockefeller too. Of course, this is all crowded af.

Around New Years. I'd fly up maybe the 30th to go with boy toy to NYC for New Years. Then it's up in the air if we'd stay there or head out of the city elsewhere. I do want to hit up a few places in the city while up there (and the Rockerfeller) but I worry the cold will kill me.

I was planning to go up to NYC before I met her.
Might as well kill 2 or 3 birds with one stone. :doge

hey atra...I'm proud of you.
-
AirBNB it/hotel - see what prices are good. Can even mix it up- different places in the different Burroughs depending how long you are there
Personally I've had a blast in manhattan
But I do believe my style of partying/going out may be a tad bit different than yours

If you're interested in catching any electronic music performers, Output in Williamsburg is the best club in the city.
-
Airbnb for sure, don't burden your friend.

I'll do some leg work for you:
https://www.airbnb.com/s/Brooklyn--NY--United-States/homes?allow_override%5B%5D=&checkin=2017-09-01&checkout=2017-09-30&price_max=586&ne_lat=40.706948941905374&ne_lng=-73.86110120222304&sw_lat=40.51074621010855&sw_lng=-74.06949811384413&zoom=12&search_by_map=true&s_tag=Iaci5sQR
Note, this is cheap (IMO) $500-600 range for a month. I booked a month (well blocked it out) for you simply because I don't know when you'd want to go beyond September.

This is increasing it to around $1,500 for the month.

I think this one is good.
That's just looking at the first page.

Note, if you give me a price range and date(s) (in PM if you want), I can look more general and drill down a few places.
Especially if you list things like wifi, tv, etc. The place I booked upstate didn't have a TV but allowed me to stream things on a Chromecast to a projector, for instance. So that may be an option but that requires you messaging the host to find out.
-
Also be very aware that taking cabs and the subway is expensive.
:confused
Get a 7-day unlimited metrocard. It'll be $32 plus another $1 for the actual card. You can use this as much as you want until the 7 days are up. Then refill it with 7-days unlimited again. You'll have almost anywhere in NYC during your whole trip for $65. Download some MTA related apps to make getting around on our trains & buses easier. :win
The subway is a piece of shit though and you will definitely experience delays on it, but tourists seem to love it. If possible, avoid taking it during rush hour.
-
Might just be me having been dumb and not expecting to take the public transportation everywhere. But yeah... it ate into my money fast up state.
-
1- get an AirBnB outside of the city, far off on one of the subway lines. it'll be and hour trip into Manhattan but it'll be cheaper. Brooklyn has a bunch of subway lines so it should be easy to find something.
2- all subways in NYC are designed to get you in and out of Manhattan. If you're trying to get around WITHIN Brooklyn it's much harder and takes more time. But if you're just trying to get into the city from one of the boroughs, it's easy peasy.

So, essentially Brooklyn wouldn't be the ideal hub to base out of? Which is kinda silly to me as someone who drives the same distance that it takes to get from Brooklyn to Manhattan daily. Then again Greenville, SC is not NYC.
Would having an AirBnB further out on Long Island be more ideal?
edit: Also, I have the money for all of this so I'm not too worried about cost. Ideally, I'd rather pay more money if it means I can get from point A to B faster than wait an hour to get anywhere.
-
It depends entirely on what you're trying to do when you're here and how you want to get around.
If you plan on doing stuff primarily in Manhattan, staying in any of the Boroughs is fine because they all have lines the run in and out. Like I said, the subway lines are designed to shuttle people in and out of Manhattan. There are ways to get from place to place in Brooklyn and Queens but you're looking at longer train trips as you head in the opposite direction to transfer to a train that goes where you want to go. Obviously Uber is available but its a little pricey.
Long Island has the Long Island Rail Road to get into the city, but it doesn't use the same passes as the standard MTA subway lines. Also it runs at set intervals and it'll be a much longer trip in. Not like it's not doable but you'll have to account for it.
-
Yeah, I wouldn't really recommend the LIRR, especially if you're gonna be a night owl - there's a dead period from about 2:30 to 5 where no trains run.
Try looking in Astoria, Queens. Pretty close to the city by subway, also a happening area in its own right with a lot of great eateries. May be a -tad- cheaper than Manhattan and the convenient parts of Brooklyn.
Also, to NYC-Bore - should we plan a meetup when Atra is in town?
-

Really? I think the last train for me was midnight... no, thinking more-- it was 11. My train at Penn Station was delayed (because I missed it by like 30 mins, thanks East Coast-up-the-way Train!) to then and then I got upstate around like 2AM. I'm surprised NYC/Long Island would shutdown around then since it seemed like Penn Station (and Madison Square Garden) were busy as hell near Midnight.
The place Boy Toy took me for Pizza shuts down around 3AM as well, so I'm shocked Long Island would "sleep" when a college town upstate along with Penn Station doesn't seem like it'd shutdown.

Any of them still post but you and fistful?

Oh yeah, plenty of places are still active in NYC (and even the island - we have our fair share of 24 hour diners and the bars in NYS close at 4AM), it's just the LIRR service is extremely sporadic during the late late night.

Tiesto (or others) as someone that hasn't been in the brutal North (or generally anywhere not sub-tropical) Winters, give me Amazon links to relatively cheap and decent looking (no Mac expensive and looking, please~) winter coats and over coats/pants. Because I doubt jeans and tennis shoes will survive 20 degree winter snows. :lol
-
LOL, you don't want to ask me about fashion. Jeans will be fine, I'd get some type of boots though in case of the snow.
I have a down coat from Guess that looks something like this for when it's really freezing, except in black (not grey):

If its really only for freezing weather go with real down not synthetic, if you also want to wear the jacket above freezing point and in winter rain, go for syntethic down.
This is the one I got for for like 125 quid. Trim is detachable.

-
Where you headed timu?
-
oh yeah and jeans are fine in winter, you just need (thermal) long johns. Its all about layers. I got a pair of merino wool undies. wool socks or a good blend are important too, and a pair of decent boots with a thick sole. and eat a real breakfast
-

Upstate NY to see Boy Toy, who wants to go to NYC for New Years and possibly the rest of the week. :-[

Parka's not bad. I dunno about the fur. You got one without the fur as a hoodie?

The fur is removeable, which I did
