Please be good.  I loved Saint's Row and am willing to forget about the city-recycling from SR4 and Gat Outta Hell.  PLS.

Reviews are all over the place.   Tom Chick surprisingly loved it and gave it a 5/5: http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/2017/08/15/12-reasons-agents-mayhem-isnt-just-another-open-world-playground/

This seems to be a good time from what I can gather. Maybe we'll wait for it to just go to $40 on sale and not $20. :-*

Tom Chick loves Volition games, and I love Tom Chick because he's goofy and we often have similar agreements on perpendicular views of certain games to reviewers writ large, but I dunno...

This is an incredibly bold claim to make:

Which is why the game this most resembles is Freedom Force.

Just makes me go :huh

I haven't been able to try this yet-- Steam would not download the last bit of the game all day long.  Tried deleting what was there and it would start with half the game already downloaded.   ??? :lol

So after several attempts of this and several restarts later, it just finished and is showing as playable.

But if you look at all the complaints about it not working...I don't know if "playable" is the right way to describe it.  :doge

I want Johnny Gat otherwise I'd just get a refund and get it on PS4.

Well...runs great for me.
:leon

Put it on ultra and I'm getting a rock-solid framerate at 2560x1080-- ultra-wide is supported!  But maybe it falls apart after the first mission?

Have had some framerate dips, but apart from that it runs solid.

But Saint's Row this is not...nor is it trying to be.  If Saint's Row is Volition take on GTA, Agents is their take on Crackdown.  That's what it reminds me of more than Saint's.  It's also got a heavy emphasis on being very "Saturday morning cartoon" like.  Clearly a nod to G.I. Joe, even with cheesy "knowing is half the battle" style lines here and there.

It's nothing special, but it seems fun enough so far.

Digging this game a lot. It's not innovative or new or anything fancy, but it's a very solid gamey game. I can see it getting old if you do lengthy play sessions, but if you just play it two or so hours at a time, it'll probably get a lot of play. The gameplay is satisfying and the characters are pretty well varied in how they play.

I don't expect this thing to sell well, so if you can wait a few months for a price drop, go for it.

I'll probably check it out when it's cheap, but man I wish they'd just scale back the crazy again and make something like saints row 2 that straddles the line between grounded and absurd.

That's partially the unfortunate thing of what I've seen in this, it's not even fun crazy or absurd like The Third and IV were. This strips back in the wrong manner.

Saints Row IV was a logical progression of some of what they did in The Third (especially in the deckers world) and it being originally a DLC set in a Matrix style world.

Somewhat amusing, the rumors were true that Volition was intending on "rebooting" the world after destroying it in Saints Row IV. It just led to this instead of a Saints Row that stripped everything back which people were assuming a "reboot" meant instead of a literal one.

demi asking about this in the general thread made me look it up and it bomba'd so hard that Volition fired 30 people including the general manager of the studio and brought back:

You can forgive Volition for not feeling particularly celebratory at the homecoming of its former long-serving producer Jim Boone.

Boone returns to the Saints Row creator as studio development director. He had been part of the Volition family for most of its life. He was there in 1994 when it was part of Parallax, working in QA on the publishing side on the likes of Descent and Descent II. He witnessed Parallax split into Volition and Outrage, and became a producer on the FreeSpace series. He witnessed the birth of Red Faction and Saints Row, acting as one of the company's main spokespeople, before leaving 18 months ago for a role at League of Legends creator Riot Games.
About the only real hint that he talks about that may lead to anything game wise (especially since he hadn't yet started there at the time of the interview) is that he seems to kinda lament that they didn't do more with geo-mod from Red Faction and how others like Battlefield have come along and not really advanced it further.

Also you could take his one comment as suggesting this might have been better off titled "Saints Row: Agents of MAYHEM" with a few more deliberate ties worked in.

Hah. I mean, I saw it come out on Steam, but I never heard anyone talk about it on reddit/et. al. to where it's like "welp."

66% price cut less than two months after release is a pretty bad sign.

On the other hand, that's a pretty tempting price.

The videos I've seen of it have been pretty soulless
They did a video thing with IGN where it was "WHO CAN CAUSE THE MOST DESTRUCTION AND CHAOS IN TWO MINUTES" competition or something among IGN interns.

The one guy can't get anything going because no cars are spawning as he runs down the road between intersections. :lol

If your open world games are becoming less populated as technology increases you may need to re-evaluate your design. Also if they have fewer and fewer interior environments, most of which are now just holes in the buildings of the open world.

That's always been the case with Sandboxes, though?

Yes and no.

I mean, sure, tech wise you could do it where the door opens and you just go inside and it streams it in while the open world is still outside, but a lot what I saw in Agents of Mayhem videos and was already a bit of an issue since the move to Steelport is that the "interior" was like the "Power" Penthouse in The Third, it's just attached to the top of the unenterable building and incredibly simplistic. AoM has some where you're lucky if there's windows to break through to access it, not even doors exist.

That just popped a comparison into my head. CS:S and DoD:S compared to the original versions of the maps. All the "interiors" are there, but they had to take off the doors and often even remove parts of the buildings because Source, at the time, could not section those off and keep them accessible from the rest of the map through the windows, etc. as the maps had to be one open area. In dod_kalt you hide in a building you can see out into the street always in Source, in the original you could close the door and hide inside.

Some of the areas I saw in AoM reminded me of those DoD:S/CS:S buildings that are all missing their doors. They're really just walls around part of the map rather than seeming like an actually designed interior like Saint Row 2's museum or casino or as far back as Vice City's mall. Or SR2's mall!

Now those "actual interiors" are often reserved for missions then changed or altered permanently, you can't go back and visit them whenever like the aforementioned casino or mall.

This is $20 on Humble Store. If you're a Humble Monthly subscriber it's another 10% off for $18. https://www.humblebundle.com/store/agents-of-mayhem

I had Humble Credit accrued as well.

So I got this for $3.11. I have no regrets.

Volition, once we were pre-order and midnight unlock buddies. Now look at us.

Yeah, the transition to digitally delivered games also means that the import games market here has completely stagnated. And, on a related side note, game rentals are illegal in Japan.
