Title: Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey may be the best sequel to improve upon the original
Post by: The Fake Shemp on January 27, 2007, 02:53:50 PM
... EVER.

Seriously, it's so much better than Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

I was going to laugh at you and mention Godfather II or Empire Strikes Back, then I realized you're talking about "greatly improving" the previous movie. While Godfather II and Empire Strikes Back are amazing, it's not like the movies they follow up are bad or anything like that.

And I would say that Godfather I>Godfather II

Yeah, they follow up original films that are considered landmark or classic.  Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey is an awesome movie that follows up a surprisingly forgettable celluoid version of a late 80s time capsule.  Playing Clue with Death is so awesome.

I've never seen an entire Rambo movie.

Then you should be questioning your manhood.

First off, general concensus is that First Blood is superior.  Second, even if you were to make the argument that Rambo is superior to First Blood, it would be nowhere near the improvement that Bogus Journey is to Excellent Adventure.

Here's a harder question: what is the WORSE sequel of all time, that's inferior to the original and doesn't make meaningful improvements?

No way, Flamer.

The easy answer is always Caddyshack II.

Ohh good answer.  Holy fuck that movie is horrible.

And as for the original topic, I used to love Bill and Ted's as a kid, but I never saw the sequel until a couple of years ago.  I was working at Pizza Hut when we had these dvd giveaways, and the second Bill and Ted was one of them.  I took it home not expecting much, but laughed my ass off.  I'll always have a special place for the first one and it's cheesiness, but the second one with the "Bad Robot Us's" and Death is fucking great.  An underrated classic for sure, and probably better than the first one.

I don't agree that the first one is worthless however.

I never said the first one was worthless, just forgettable!  It's one of those moments in time capture on celluoid that represents the era.  It doesn't age the best and it's completely harmless.  I enjoyed it for what it was when I was a kid.

But c'mon, the sequel has Death pitted against the collective might of Bill and Ted at such wargames as BATTLESHIP and TWISTER.  And also Martian alien scientists from Heaven.  And evil robots!

A lot of 80's comedies had weak sequels.

Vacation to European Vacation(made up for it with Christmas Vacation)
Caddyshack to Caddyshack II
Fletch to Fletch Lives

None of those sequels are as bad as Caddyshack II.  They were just inferior Ghostbusters II-esque sequels.

Ghostbusters II is better than the original.
Ghosbutsers II is enjoyable but there is NO WAY it is better than the first.

Ghostbusters is a ALL TIME CLASSIC, ghosbusters II is merely a enjoyable sequel.

But THANK GOD Bill Murrary refuses to do a 3rd one. Ramis and Akyrod tried to get him to do one a year or two ago with Ben Stiller.

Caddyshack II is easily one of the worst sequels ever.

I do have to disagree with you on the topic, though, Willco.  I think both movies come out just about equal, and I think both are great -- though you probably shouldn't watch them more than once a year if you want to still love them.

Ghostbusters II is criminally bad. The original is a classic.

I dunno.  He had a shitty sketch show on MTV or something during my formative years.  Then it got canceled and it seemed like HE got canceled.

I don't think the sequel was that awful.  Anything with Bill Murray before he met Wes Anderson and started his Somber Period has redeeming qualities.  I'd say it's better than Stripes.

But yeah, the original is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better.

Ghostbusters 2 was okay, but man that ending was lame. Oh, I know, we'll use the Statue of Liberty to rally all New Yorkers together and use the power of their good feelings to defeat Vigo. *vomit*

As far as most improved sequel over the original, I'd say The Road Warrior.
