It's good but has its share of flaws. Online and SP are both fun, SP is grindy as fuck. You gotta play each course like 9-12 times to unlock the next. But if playing golf feels like a grind, this is probably the wrong game for you. like I don't mind playing the courses a bunch because it's not like there's a lot of them and it's fun working on better scores, improving skills.

Online is sorta a weekly leaderboard for each course that you're updated on the fly as you progress. No way to filter friends yet though which is stupid. There's also a real MP weird ass mode and a bizarre interactive home golf course hub.

The art also took a hit and graphics sorta like on PS3 (shimmering everywhere unless you got a 4k tv). Core golfing still rocks though.

Sounds kinda bad. Don't recall have to do all that in previous Hot Shots but hey, could be wrong.
Title: Re: Everybody's Golf

You definitely had to grind in each HSG to unlock the next course. You'd unlock a vs match and then beat them to unlock the next course. This is because these games only have like 5 courses usually so they want to make you work for them. Difference here is you have to beat 3 vs characters to unlock the next course each time here.

I'll check it out
Title: Re: Everybody's Golf
Post by: Bebpo on August 31, 2017, 09:59:44 PM
The thing is, this is the first new HSG in like 10 years. So like my first impression in the other thread, buy/not buy is pretty simple. Do you like HSG and want to play a new one? Yes/no. Like it's not perfect, but it's a new HSG. Plus it's pretty cheap (I got it for $30).

I just hope they add friend filters. Don't really care about competing against super amazing top20 in the world people, but I would like to compete against my friends without having to ask them on this forum what their best score is. Just need a friend filter in the leaderboards so I'm hoping they'll patch it in. HSG on PS3 had like 500 patches over its life.

Ok, 5 years :P Didn't realize the Vita game was HSG6 since the US name doesn't have the 6 in it. Thought it was a spinoff like the PSP games and the last mainline was the PS3 game that came out right after PS3's release in 2007ish. Didn't even know the Vita game had a PS3 release! Missed out on that.

When I look that up, it's listed as being the Euro version of Minna No Golf 5 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everybody%27s_Golf_5), not Minna No Golf 6.  Wikipedia says 6 was localized as Everybody's Golf in Europe and Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational in North America.  Doesn't seem like there's a physical version in English.

played it for a bit and it's cool but hot takes:
-fuck you DLC. on-disc unlock of remastered first course from HSG1? OMG. Paid the 4.99 for as got the game for like 31, but come on. also not sure if carts are DLC only, I assume I just haven't unlocked yet.
-wtf is there a black border around the screen on my TV? wish there was some kind of option to correct, no way am I messing with TV every time I play. also would like more options in general, esp brightness...it's a bit dim on my TV. no idea if there was a JP speech or if it is what it is.
-opening song is terrible

will play more later, technically supposed to be working.
Title: Re: Everybody's Golf
Post by: Bebpo on September 01, 2017, 04:39:34 PM
Carts are unlocked at rank 3 along with the 3rd course from what I've heard. Fishing at rank 4. You rank up by beating 3 vs characters each rank and you unlock vs battles by leveling up from SP playing. Don't forget to turn on "serious mode" when you play SP to get more xp per play.

Yeah the course dlc is a bit lame. Though I think it's a good value at like $5 for a course considering how much replay each course has since there's only like 5-6 courses per game. Also the remake course was pre-order free dlc.

Not sure about the black border, there's definitely little stuff that needs to be patched in.

Haven't had a chance to play since the first night. I want to finish Uncharted LL first (hopefully tonight), but looking forward to getting back to this over the weekend.

The black border is because this game goes by your PS4's base settings instead of just fitting to the screen on its own. You can fix it in system settings by going to sound and screen > display area settings

Unlocked the 2nd half of the first course and did through the first of three vs characters on it. 2nd half (IN) seems a lot easier than (OUT) on the first course. I think my best official scores for 9H OUT are like -3 or -4 but I've done (IN) three times and gotten -6, -7, -6. 9H (IN) is pretty fun.

Oh man. I'm loving this game, but yeah. The grind is real. Last I played was HSG3 and this seems slightly grindier. I don't mind too much but I can see how this would turn some people off.

I've played WT and I forget which other but they were pretty grindy too. It's too bad that it's just the one course to grind on at the start but I keep improving.

gaf is starting to rumble about some insidious P2W scheme that appears after rank 7 which is more concerning.

Had a pretty good run this morning on the 2nd half of the first course. Definitely feel like I'm improving. Just beat the 2nd vs character on the 2nd half. Couple more rounds to go then finally get to see a new course.

Also I've always thought chip-in shots were a bit bogus in this series. It's so much easier to chip in a shot from just outside the putting area than to put it in with all the slopes involved. With a chip-in because you're so close wind doesn't matter and as long as it's relatively flat all you have to do is hit the marker on the flag and perfect impact (or close) and it's almost 100% going in. Feel like there's probably strategy at some point in aiming for the fringe area rather than the putting area and chipping in vs putting for the best scores.

Title: Re: Everybody's Golf
Post by: Bebpo on September 04, 2017, 08:40:32 PM
Ok, played a bunch today. Some thoughts:

-2nd Course Alpine Valley is fun. The height differences as usual add more strategy into shot planning.
-Played the first DLC course, it's ok, a plain easy course. But then I saw the 2nd DLC course was also a 1-difficulty plain easy course? Seems kind of pointless. I'd buy a $6 DLC course if it had good challenges and looked neat. Hopefully the remaining DLC courses will be more difficult and interesting.
-Submitted my daily scores and it's always interesting seeing the player count. Course 1/2 has like 30k players submitting a daily score. The DLC course #1 that was pre-order DLC has like 1.5k submitting a score.
-Ok I got challenged by the 50 birdies swim vs guy. The 15 seconds to take a shot or -1 penalty is BRUTAL, some of these modifiers really change up the gameplay (which is cool and I appreciate the replayabilty each course has because of them). We were neck and neck going +1/-1 back and forth with a bunch of ties. Got to the final hole tied and he hits it in the water on a par 3, saved my ass. Nothing worse than halfway through a 15-30 min set you miss your timing with a turtle or the wind is even stronger than you thought and the ball goes crazy and fucks up your whole game. At least in the 9H/18H against the CPU you can usually get far enough ahead to cover any mistakes on a hole. Been getting a lot of -7 to -11s on 9H and the CPU ends up with like -3 or -4 at best giving some leeway in rank 3.
-Golf cart is kinda fun, I ain't gonna hate on this

Even with the weird ass leveling and apparently end game grinding and the DLC courses so far being boring, game is still fun as hell. Really enjoy running the holes and fighting the Vs opponents, now with the added leaderboard/rivals dailies. If they just add friendlist rival leaderboards for your daily scores it'd be great. The daily stuff is kinda evil because now it's a goddamn MMO and makes you want to run each 9H course once a day and submit for the bonus items ><

I somewhat retract my grind complaint. There is a grind, but it's weirdly frontloaded. They start you off with nine holes and it takes multiple hours to get the rest of the course, but after that it's a pretty consistent trickle of content. Just beat the first Rank 4 lady and having a blast with this game.

Yeah, if I was making the game I'd make it "Everybody's World" and it'd have golfing, fishing, tennis, cart races, and other stuff in a social online hub like the Sony version of Wii Sports but online connected.

Then again I just saw the game sells about 100k in Japan in its better selling entries like this one, and I doubt the worldwide sales are anything amazing, so now I understand the small team budget feel of the series.

Got to rank 4 yesterday. Beach course is fun. The last Vs. match of rank 3 with tiny holes was rough. I like my mega-cups or tornado cups :P

Also while graphically I'm not very impressed, the different time of day options help a lot. Some courses look bland during the day, but look really nice at sunset.

You're a lawyer, aren't you? Surprised you're not constantly being dragged out to golf already.

There are golf social things occasionally, but I'm too terrible at golf to go. I've done the driving range a few times and went actual golfing once and it went very bad so I stick to mini-golf. Would definitely golf if I was any good. Golfing videogames are always a lot of fun.

Online options are pretty disappointing. A friend got it, but we can't go on the same online open course? Or play Turf war together?

Yup, I'm hoping this will be patched in. This and lack of friend filter in leaderboards are the biggest oversights.

How bad is the grind compared to World Invitational? Leveling up the characters to Max Loyalty + doing the championships over over and over for points and unlock ability was/is painful. I dunno if I want to get a PS4 to do that over.

Also someone recommended "Eagle" as a Pangya/MNG arcade golf on Android and that's... uh... not good. I mean it's not bad, but the app crashes on mobile start-up, which is  :doge
Title: Re: Everybody's Golf
Post by: Bebpo on September 15, 2017, 11:17:52 PM
It's honestly not that bad after the first course:

-Do 9 hole a couple times on serious difficulty (aka slightly hard mode), unlock Vs character
-Beat Vs character in a match
x3

= next course and next rank abilities, repeat.

The problem with the first course is you start out with only 9 holes and it counts the 2nd 9 holes as like course 2, so it takes twice as long on course 1 than the other courses. I'd have almost everything unlocked already but I play like 15-45 mins every few days since I'm playing other stuff, so I'm progressing slowly.

Though even though I've been playing the series since the first one, I was thinking that I probably never have unlocked the final course in any of the games. Right now I can basically birdie -1 every hole, so either -9 for 9 hole or -18 for 18 hole. At this point on Course 3, rank 4 serious mode that's just barely getting me wins against the cpu. I could see myself getting stuck at the next course and never seeing the final course in this one.

Beat rank 5 and DIDN'T UNLOCK THE FINAL COURSE

fuck this bullshit I'm out  :maf :maf :maf :maf

Like the amount of grind and stress for me to get through rank 5 as an average MnG player (typically birdies mixed with some par and some eagles; usually around -6 to -9 but hit shots that totally fuck up everything and make me quit and reset about 5-10% of the time) was A LOT, but during all that I was like I've never made it far enough to unlock the final course in any MnG game, my goal is to try to beat rank 5 and do it here, play the final course and few times and then shelve it and be done.

The 2nd vs character in rank 5, the gal that's a score match on vortex valley was super fucking hard and you couldn't cheese it like match plays where you can just keep resetting until you win on the first 3 holes. Kept getting bad wind and a bad shot that ruined everything a few holes in. On my 4th or 5th attempt an hour later I was pretty much on the verge of bailing on the game but had a real lucky run and got like a bunch of eagles and ended up with -8 when she had +0. 3rd versus guy wasn't bad other than the tiny holes but got lucky and kept getting chip ins on the first 3 courses for 3 wins in a row.

What's surprising to me is that having been playing all the rank course matches on serious mode, the VS characters feel tuned at that level. So it's been a challenge for most of them. But what about the normal player whose not playing on serious mode and is winning 1st place with like -1/+0 scores? How the fuck are they supposed to be progressing since the Vs. characters don't have 2 difficulty levels?

Anyhow, rank 5 was intense, I'm glad I cleared it. Felt satisfying. But I looked and the first Vs. character in rank 6 needs 3100xp grind which even in serious mode (and rank 6 serious mode might be kinda tough for me to get 1st) at is still like four 9 hole runs -> vs character x 3. And who knows how hard the rank 6 vs characters are gonna be.

Git gud and all that, but just pretty ticked off that I thought I'd finally see the last course in a MnG for the first time, since every rank unlocks a new course, but then they pull this bullshit and make you grind 2 ranks to get the final course goddamnit fuck

I feel like that's where I wind up in all these games.

This game worth anything in singleplayer? I'm not getting PS+ before MH World.

I only play Single Player and luckily there's no forced MP or MP shenanigans. It still plays like a good fun single player HSG game with each tournament being a random variation of course/weather/wind/special conditions. There is a annoyingly long grind to unlock the 2nd course and 5th final course, but the pacing in the middle is pretty normal. The Vs character matches feel like the Vs character matches in the older games.

I don't think it's the best game in the series or anything SP-wise, but it's a solid fun entry with the grind being the only major negative. There's also a weird club auto-leveling system, but it's just a bit weird and not a big deal.

So I got over being mad and started rank 6 and I think I'm too hard on myself about my golfing skills. Got to the 2nd Vs character and pretty much demolished every tournament so far in rank 6. Even advanced from golf lvl.10->14 in the process. Been consistently getting like -6/-7 on 9h and -11/-12 on 18h on all 4 of the available courses while the CPUs are getting like -2/-3. I like how the tournaments use all 4 courses because it's neat going back to old courses and seeing how much better you are (and not talking about the extra distance from stronger clubs, but like landing shots where you want them to go, especially on the green).

Even got my first hole where the ball hit the flag and then did a homing shot in.

Been using the big air set the whole game fwiw, max distance is about 312y right now at lvl.25.

Depending on how tough rank 7 is, might actually try to beat it and finish the SP campaign.

So beat Rank 6 earlier, at first was worried about the final Vs guy because rough/bunker is +1 but it actually worked to my advantage since the cpu would hit in the rough at least once a course and put them +1 behind me. One thing I learned in all my HSG playing is that instead of just going the full distance every shot, sometimes it makes more sense to play safer and use the 2nd strongest shot if it's not going to cost you an extra shot later for the lost distance.

Then the ending yay. I guess it makes sense since Rank 7 is post-game and infinite with no "clear"
Did the 5th course a couple of times. Some pretty tough bits with all the hills and bunkers. Didn't do too bad, got under par each time but still tough.

So now that SP is sorta done, I went back to the MP and :lol
Did the 5th course 9H for the day and ranked 78th out of 85 ;_;
...but on hole 3 I got 2nd best shot of the day so I got the little statue of my custom character next to the hole. That was cool. I took screenshots.

Then did the daily 9H and on Kona Beach and placed 2800/3500 ><
Yeah, since there's zero chance of me ever being competitive online, and SP has no more xp and you can't beat Rank 7, probably just gonna do the MP daily selected 9H here and there.

One thing that's nice about MP is it's the only place with instant restarts. I wish you could do that in SP. I probably spent like 10% of my HSG gaming time watching the loading screen. There's definitely too much loading in the game. On the other hand even though MP is quick with instant restarts, since you can't skip animations in MP like you can in SP, courses take like 20-30% longer in MP to run which is a bit sucky. Oh well.

Overall I definitely got my money's worth. In fact I super regret buying the game on disc because it's the kinda game I'd like to turn on and play a round here and there over the next years. When it's on sale I'll probably double dip and buy the digital at some point.

I'm also pretty surprised a few months in now and a patches in that they still haven't fixed some obvious stuff:

-Still no way to filter leaderboard by friends
-When your in an online course, is there no way to go directly to the course selection and jump to another without having to LOADING go back to the main home LOADING select a new one?

The Rank 7 Vs dudes are bruuuuuuuutal and mostly unfair. The second you get one round ahead the AI rubberbands HARD and it's holes in one and chip in Eagles from half course.

I think everyone who plays this can relate.

I mean let's talk for a second about some of the super fucking ultra bullshit in this game: Like forget the shots where the wind/some tree/elevation/etc... something goes wrong and your ball lands in the wrong spot and flies down a hill into a lake or something. What's really bullshit is how sometimes you miss the exact timing and get a mild bunny shot and a mild bunny shot makes the ball fly up and suddenly curve 90 degrees and go off the course O.B. because you slightly miss a shot that had plenty of mistake room on either side where it should have gone if it had just been off by a dozen feet either direction.

But then sometimes you hit bunny or turtle and it barely moves off course. The randomness is the worst, especially when like 8 holes in and up -3 or -5 and then a single slightly off bunny shot gets you a triple bogey and fucks up the entire run.  :maf

The Rank 7 Vs dudes are bruuuuuuuutal and mostly unfair. The second you get one round ahead the AI rubberbands HARD and it's holes in one and chip in Eagles from half course.

This too.

Yes, and the one truly awful shot never comes on like...hole 2. It's always way in there. It's unfair and it wastes all your time.

I am sure I'll come back to it because hey hot shots, but way too much to play right now to slog through anything.

I think after two days I'm already done with the game. I guess it's good enough at golf gameplay, but I started to realize that from the very beginning on they already make you replay the same courses way too often. And the courses aren't terribly exciting either, it's hard not to get birdies on a constant basis. Also the audiovisuals in this title aren't what I call pleasing.

That's Mina No Golf in general. I love the series, but the grind is real.
