Title: So many hurricanes, might as well have a megathread
Post by: Yeti on September 09, 2017, 10:22:45 PM
Houston just dealt with Harvey, Irma's currently making her way through the Caribbean and about to make her way through Florida, and we've got more possible hurricanes developing in the Atlantic. Might as well have a dedicated thread.

I'm currently bunkered down, just me and my cat ready to ride this bitch out. I should be fine, I live in the Kissimmee/Orlando area which is pretty much the center of Florida where it shouldn't be so bad, and I live on the third floor of a condo complex so I shouldn't have to worry about flooding. I'm getting a paid day off work tomorrow, and probably Monday if it's still going strong which is nice. Gonna spend the day playing video games and reading the Bore while I've still got electricity.

I know Floridabore has gotten to be a pretty big subcommunity here, I hope everyone stays safe if you're still here!

I just want to use this thread to talk about how disappointed I am that the makers of the HurryCane never got the rights to use The Scorpion's Rock You Like a Hurricane in any of their commercials. It's troubled me for years.

From my limited experience with legit Floridians, people who lived through Andrew don't give much of a fuck about hurricane hype every year.

And these aren't pets who are just being left inside, Director of Animal Care Diane Suave said.

“They are left in a yard, in a pen they cannot escape from or tethered to trees or poles,” she said.

Palm Beach County Animal Care reports animal control officers have rescued 49 dogs and two cats in the last 48 hours.

This latest update comes just one day after local animal officals reported finding dozens of dogs chained to trees and parked cars.

Stay safe, Slime.

Looks like Atlanta is supposed to get a severe tropical storm as a result from this.  People have already done the typical "prepper panic" and too many places are sold out of water.  Gas is also getting harder to find with the huge influx of Floridians and highways have been a nightmare.  We pretty much made it a point to just stay around town this weekend.

Seem to have made it through mostly unscathed. Didn't get much sleep last night because it was so noisy, sounded like there was a roaring ocean right outside my window, and power kept going out for ten seconds, then coming back on. It's still doing that every now and again, even the hurricane has moved to the north of me.

A large tree in my back yard got blown over, there were three raccoons that lived in it that I liked to watch playing, I hope they are okay.  :(

My only memories of Florida (not the tourist areas) was going to see my grandparents. Both lived in these glorified trailer parks that abutted man-made canals.

I can't imagine those types of residential areas are having a good time now.

Power went out at my place in Atlanta at 12:15 yesterday afternoon, STILL isn't back on yet. No update on when, either, but they are out there working on clearing trees, branches, etc, and lots of places have power. I'm at a friend's place right now in fact.

Took these earlier today walking around my neighborhood. They're all on a 2 block stretch of a street right around the corner.

This actually happened later in the night, I drove down this street at around 7 last night and it hadn't happened yet.

View from opposite side of the street.

Just a bit further down. Ouch.

This is at least the 2nd tree that's fallen at this place in the 3+ years I've lived in the neighborhood.

I didn't have it as bad as toku but went almost 3 days without power. No fun. Cold showers, definitely no fun. Traffic is fucking terrible, one of the traffic lights near me was/is out and you could just sense the hesitation from the other drivers "Should I go? should I stay? I-I don't know what to do".

I got a lot of reading done, so that was nice.

Yeah, it seems like a lot of folks didn't understand it was a four way stop.

I was without power in my area for like 5 days nearly. Sweating my butt off at night while sleeping was no fun. But I did finish the Witcher novels I started in July within like 2-3 days, so there is that outside of having to charge my Surface between sessions.

These tropical storms becoming major hurricanes at the drop of a hat is the stuff of nightmares.

I remember when Patricia turned from nothing into a CAT 5 in the span of a day off the Pacific Coast of Mexico and thinking "thank god that shit doesn't happen in the Atlantic". It's happened multiple times this year, Maria pulled a Patricia and blew up into a CAT5. Harvey rapidly strengthened into a 4 before landfall too. This scary stuff is the present and future.

Best of luck to anyone in Puerto Rico.

Maria made landfall on the SE side of Dominica and suddenly shifted NNW, resulting in the eye swiping over the majority of the island. There probably won't be much left...
Guadeloupe got battered by the NE quadrant, still a good distance from the eye. There's some footage of it online and it's not pretty, so I can only imagine how it went in Dominica (with winds at 180mph...).

It dropped to a strong Cat 4 but that was expected considering that it went over mountains peaking at 1500m. As of now it's tracking to restrengthen to a Cat5, hit the Virgin Islands and go right over San Juan PR.
