Just started playing it today...
The action is fast and responsive, but I'm just worried that they've been adding way too much superfluous stuff to the Ys formula lately - collectathons, map completion percentage, 'points of interest', fetch quests, and crafting systems galore. The nice thing about the best Ys games - Origin and Oath of Felghana - were how to-the-point they were, relying mostly on action and level design.

I'm getting close to the end of Chapter 2 (bout 10 hours in) and so far the game is fairly linear. New areas are gated off by people or gear you get by following the story, and most of the points of interest and sidequests are along paths you have to follow anyway. I haven't had to grind for any crafting items yet either. This could change in later chapter, but it seems pretty pretty well designed so far.

lolwut @ the end of Chapter 2
Sahad: "I didn't expect it to end like this."

Sahad is the best character

Sahad gets a lot worse in the 2nd half imo because he's a scaredy cat and his schtick is freaking out at everything over and over.
Only character I liked enough to be a Kiseki character is the purple hat dude and one of the guys you'll meet later. The rest of the cast are kinda generic.
I approve of hot Doge though

Made it to chapter 3, wow chapter 2 was pretty long! Explored ~40% of the map or so. The story is at its most interesting when it's about finding the survivors and some of the suspicion that goes on between them, less interesting at the Dana parts when it becomes your generic world tree (I'm just glad they didn't call it "yiggdrasil" again) type stuff.
Game is really addicting, even crafting hasn't been much of an issue with rare drops, I usually just get everything I need by exploring. The world map is pretty big but not ridiculously so, there's always a direction to go in but there's plenty of opportunities for backtracking as you unlock new powerups or get more survivors to help clear blockages.

This game is so good, surprised at the lack of interest on this board. Is it cuz the PC version got delayed?
-
i'll get it when its $20

The ps2 era anime ass intro made me really question my decision making skills, but once you’re off the boat and the game opens up it is a lot of fun. The crafting, questing, mapping stuff really does lend well to the “just another 30 minutes” feel.
I really wish there weren’t loads / transitions as it seems like most of the world is already there prior to the transition.
-
This is in indefinite delay hell on PC. :gloomy
-
I'll get it on PS4 if nothing has come out about the PC version in another month or two, I guess.

https://gematsu.com/2017/11/ys-viii-localization-fix-pc-version-delayed-early-2018
tldr the localization is such hot garbage that they're redoing the entire thing and rerecording VA as well with the PC release being delayed until this new version/patch is ready to ship.

I'm surprised NIS screwed it so badly, they're not new to this game by a long shot.
-
Tsk, tsk. Buy cheap, buy twice.

Game is long af... finally up to the point of no return, but have a few things to take care of (grind for the "use EXTRA 100 times" trophy, do a few of the optional interception battles). Then it seems there's a postgame dungeon? :O
Right now I'm 50+ hours in, while Trails the 3rd only took me 47. Never expected a Ys game to take me longer than a Kiseki...
-
I didn't know you finished 3rd. How'd you like it?
