Title: Teach me about Popeyes
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on January 27, 2007, 05:20:09 PM
I've decided that never having been to Popeyes before is a serious character flaw I need to fix this evening.

So, what should I get? Any particular KIND of fried chicken? Popeyes-only sides? Teach me!

Bojangles > Popeyes

Bojangles > Popeyes

That's super for you; unfortunately, I live in Orange County and the nearest Bojangles (http://"http://www.bojangles.com/aboutus_locationstn.html") is in Nashville, Tennessee. There's a Popeye's 15 minutes away, so they win.

It's a fried chicken chain in the South.  It has syrupy delicious iced tea and the best seasoned fries out there.  They also have good chicken, but most people don't have Bojangles.  I mentioned it in the last Popeye thread but it was dead so I thought I'd pimp them here.

Popeyes is actually a lot like Bojangles chicken-wise.

We have a Popeye's near here... I've never had it either. It's a bit of a drive out, but not too far. I would also like to hear what sounds good.

Structured questions for you free-form yahoos:

Mild or Spicy?
What sides are good?
Biscuits?

I'm telling you, man - we've eaten together.  If Hamburger Hamlet will make you sway, Popeyes will eat you alive!

Man Im getting a craving for fried chicken. Theres a place called Hu Da Dak down the road that does it. Its a dodgy little shop though so it might be pretty rugged

You can go wrong with the mild chicken strips meal at Popeyes.  :drool

And don't forget to ask for BBQ sauce and jelly for your biscuits!

Okay, so I got Popeyes tonight. Overall very favorable impression!

Fried chicken -- very good. I got the 3-piece dark meat combo. I used to live in southern Arkansas and my great-grandmother would fry us up some chicken that was very similar--way crispier and crunchier than KFC's "surface only" seasoning. I got the spicy chicken, which wasn't too hot.

Biscuit -- definitely a standout. very fluffy and buttery compared to KFC biscuits, which tend to be dried out. I should have gotten an extra biscuit or two on the side.

Potatoes -- surprisingly good with their spicy "cajun" gravy that managed to add a fun flavor kick without overpowering the potatoes.

I dunno if I would make the drive every time I want fried chicken, but I'm definitely glad to have given it a try and can now say with first-hand knowledge: Popeyes is yummy!

No, I don't like jelly on my biscuits when I eat 'em with chicken. Conditioning as a child, I suppose. :(

On the plus side, now I have a reason to go back!

My favorite thing about Popeye's is the sign that reads: "Some Popeye's food iems contain pork!" and yet there's not a single pork item on the menu. Maybe it's in that "Mardi Gras Cheesecake".

My boss sends me there to fetch lunch like 4 times a week
