I've been on a racing game kick again recently after not touching the genre for awhile. Currently I'm swapping between Dirt Rally and Project Cars 2.
Playing these it's cool to see the different approach to rally style. Project Cars 2 feels much easier to control the rally cars. I have the assists on "Authentic" which turns off traction control and a few other things and I weirdly find playing Rally games with the assists off to be easier because I can kick out the back and slide around where when the assists are on it's too rigid and stiff in the turns.
Dirt Rally is just an unwieldy monster that I really have to get into a zone to play correctly and even then I routinely fuck up. It's rad tho. But it's SO HARD. If I try to do a RallyCross event I can barely get above 4th place, even on easy.
It's the flip on Project Cars 2 in terms of regular touring races. If I take a super car or a fast car onto a track I basically suck and can't break the top 5.
So anyone like some Racing Games?
-
Split/Second was amazing
-
it was a great concept that would have been cool to see a follow up. All the games from that dev were great. They made an ATV racing game with GIANT JUMPS that was rad.
-
The Forza Horizon franchise are the only racers I've played in years. I miss Burnout and arcade racers in general. Sims don't do it for me or maybe I haven't tried the right one yet.
-
I loved Burnout 3. I wanted to love Burnout Paradise more than I did. The nascent open-world tone and early stabs at passively social competitive gaming were a good start but I wasn't happy with their final implementation. Still fun though.
Last pure racer I really enjoyed was Ridge Racer 4, so I'm by no means the target market for these games.

Horizon games and NFSU2 are like the only open world racers im cool with

I came in to recommend Split/Second, but I that's already been mentioned. A sequel on current gen consoles would be amazing.

I loved Horizon on 360 but I haven't played any of the others. I may pick up the latest on PC eventually if it goes on sale because the Hot Wheels stuff seems pretty cool.

Getting back into Sim Racing games made me bust out my Logitech G27 racing wheel that I've had in storage for ages. But I remembered that I always sucked using it. Like super terrible. I realize that I never really used it all that much. I should just sell it tbh.

micro machines 2
fzero gx
burnout 3
the holy triptych.

arcade racers are dead RIP
I really want to get Dirt Rally to scratch the itch.

Scratch the itch for an arcade racer? Ehhh it's not really that at all. It's very much a sim.
-
Well, more like, scratch the itch for a new rally game. I hear it has levels. So I figured it was an arcade racer.

Yep, that's where I am. I don't really care about going around in circles, which arcade racers avoid (mostly).
Dirt Rally is about the only "sim" I like.

Nah, it's very much a sim.

Anyone play Daytona 3 yet? Played at RoundOne a few weeks ago and yeah it's still classic Daytona. Hope we see a home port one day...

With Split/Second mentioned I'll toss in Blur. Which unlike Split/Second you can't buy on PC on Steam or any service last I knew.
And also, sorta different, WHEN NEW SONIC AND ALL STARS RACING!!!
-
As an aside I was feeling a bit of racing game kick that combined with GR's Saturn thread had me looking at some probably bad PS1 racers, but the only one I ever started to play any of was called Ford Racing which apparently was one of those $10 games that came out at the end of the PS1 life. It's kinda weirdly like a Ford-only Gran Turismo arcade mode clone and sorta decent really.
Then I found out that Ford Racing 3 is on Steam and I got it from some bundle at some point. Looks like PS2/Xbox up-port. But should install it and dick around with it for a couple hours anyway just because.
Though I am concerned I'll be lost plot wise having not played Ford Racing 2.
-
Off-Road on the super is still the GOAT. Arcade version too
-
I won Forza 7 and an Xbox One X from Taco Bell. Loved Forza 4 and Horizon 2 and 3 were awesome. I think Forza is the mostly consistently amazing series in gaming rn.

forgot about sonic racing. a sonic game i enjoyed so much that i started walking on tiptoes and had trouble maintaining eye contact.
-
that After Burner stage soundtrack, seeing the speed of the game on some of those stages in glorious PC-legit HD :whew
i should go back to clean up the stars and S rank :doge
-
New GT is decent, assuming the DLC is fair/exists. Forza Horizon is king last few years though and it isn't close.
Would love a non-garbage Ridge Racer or Burnout but what can one do, think those days are done. At least the wip3out remaster was good.
-
i will admit to liking Ridge Racer Unbounded, even if it wasn't balanced very well at times, also it's not anything like other Ridge Racers but i knew that after playing the demo
it's more Bugbear makes a Burnout game and Namco labels it Ridge Racer
also the user-made tracks were awesome, the giant bomb quick look has a pretty good set of examples of what most of them were like :lol
one i downloaded seemed totally normal with just more explosive stuff to avoid for like 80% of the lap, and then right when you're hitting top speed the dude put a massive turn to loop back around and filled it with spike strips :rofl

I'd be perfectly happy with a HD remake of Burnout 3 or Burnout Revenge for PS4/XBO. Paradise's open world design just ruined it for me.

Huh, all the Burnout PS2 games except the first support 480p and 16:9, I should see what they look like at 1080p on PCSX2.
-
okay, a guy running it at 5120x2880 will do :lol
gameplay about 3 minutes in:

oh god i forgot the wind sound change on the part when you go through those boats on that track (though he never manages to go full speed boost through it), sounded so amazing back when i played my xbox version on a friends TV with 5.1 or whatever it was hooked up
criterion always got props for their graphics but they did some amazing sound too, iirc black was pretty awesome in that department too

I really miss ridge racer. :(
And would the new GT be for someone who hasn't played the series since 3?
-
Ive been playing Project Cars 2 on pc and its pretty sweet. Not the biggest fan of sim racers though. Id rather get burnout revenge hd or something. Im half thinking about getting split second.

Are you into competitive online racing?
Becaus that's what GTS basically is all about.
If you are into casual racing/car collecting/screwing around, give Forza Horizon 3 a shot.
-
I bought FH3 last week. Best racing game I've played in years.

It's way more barebones than past few as far as SP mode goes. SP is really just there to get you in shape for the online. It's a much harder game to give a blanket recommendation for in comparison to FH3, I can see a good percentage of people that buy it feeling ripped off.
Note that it gets bonus points if you have a 4K HDR set, this past weekend people were blown away by how great it can look.
