[Amazon] on Monday announced it is bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy epic to television, with a multiple season commitment.

The television series will take place before the 2001 feature film "The Fellowship of the Ring," which kicked off the trilogy directed by Peter Jackson.

This just screams "hey, HBO is making a lot of money with that game of thrones thing. We should have our own game of thrones thing."

I guess they'll probably try to make it more gritty or something [ala Shadow of Mordor], but the franchise really feels like it's just been completely squeezed dry over the past 16 years. Especially if they're going to keep digging through the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings era, rather than taking some stories from The Silmarillion and expanding on them.

Ever since HBO started TV fantasy epics with their Game of Thrones original series you just knew someone would come along and grab one of the many knock-off fan fiction level novels people have written since that premiered to try and grab some of the money. Just like The Hunger Games led to all those novels written for young adults.

They were too bloated to really be "good," somebody could probably cut them down to about 3 hours and it would be a huge improvement. But I enjoyed them as an epic fantasy adventure that I probably won't ever watch again.

To be fair, maybe this will be a better interpretation of LOTR than Jackson's. I do think LOTR is better for tv format than film.

oh FUCK no

So they're not basing it off the Silmarillion, but it's set before LOTR, so I take that to mean it takes place some time in between The Hobbit and LOTR takes place?  Maybe they'll tackle some stuff from the Appendices, such as the lineages of the kings of Arnor.  There's a lot of material they could explore tbh, maybe the rise and fall of Númenor. Although the story of Númenor takes place in Akallabêth in the Silmarillion, it also figures heavily in the Appendix A of LotR, so they could pull from that. Or they could go into more detail on the forging of the rings of power, the rise of the kingdom of Angmar and its battles with the Dúnedain. Eärnur fighting the Witch-King of Angmar and Glorfindel's prophecy could be epic. The history of the Dwarves and their ring of power could be interesting. I've felt for some while that the Battle of Azanulbizar wasn't done justice in Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Hobbit.

But with my luck, they'll probably make up a bunch of gritty shit to make it more GoT-like and introduce characters like Sexy Shelob. Plus, I'd have to subscribe to Prime, I can't fap to this!

Jackson did a lot of things right, especially with Fellowship of the Ring. But there was also a lot of missed opportunities, and I would enjoy someone else's take on the material. For the record, I got some amount of enjoyment out of Ralph Bakshi's  Lord of the Rings, though he too made some baffling choices -- such as renaming Saruman to Aruman, presumably so the audience does not confuse him with Sauron.

I just love Gosling's troll face when he asked him the question. That was some "what's it got in its pocketsses" type shit.

Poor Weis and Hickman. They're never going to cash in on their novels.

I just want to see a competent Dragonlance movie or Death Gate movie before I die.

Why not the Silmarillion (and unfinished tales). That's like, prime material for a TV show.

Looking back from today, there are other franchises that may have done some things better. But at the time, there wasn't anything touching the production values that the first 3 movies had. Great cast as well.

So they're going the Game of Thrones route with this? With all the orc and hobbit sex scenes?

I'm not sure this will end well

They don't have the rights to it, and the Tolkien estate will not give them.

If it's gonna keep true to the source material: Keep dreaming. They were dying off.

First I saw the headline and was like, “oh great, a bunch of parts from The Silmarillion would make a good TV series.” Then I was disappointed and baffled.

Now I’m expecting a gritty Game of Thrones knockoff. The best I can hope for now is some full frontal elf nudity.

I wish they would have adapted the First Law series instead.  On second thought, I haven't liked a single Netflix original.  Maybe it's for the best.
