Turkey is incredibly common, including for christmas eve dinners in some countries. Not sure where desert punk is from.

Other common ones are Capon (castrated rooster), Pheasant, Quail, Duck, Goose, Ostrich. At least in France.

Compound butter is like some magical substance. The combined herb smell is intoxicating. Rubbed under and on the skin. Also stuffed the bird with the sprigs of the four different herbs.

Know that feeling. But I went anyway for the first time in like 5 years. Most of the kids in the family have grown up and have an other so it made me feel like a grandpa and extremely out of place.

Otherwise I ate and basically waited for my immediate family to be ready to GTFO of the extended family.

Love my family. Thankfully (but not really) I'm still in the closet for them so holidays are still happy times and good memories. For me, anyways. Sometimes the women get into some drama, lol.

Today was going well until my mom and grandma started talking about how Trump has single-handedly saved the economy and how classy Melania is.

Just kept my head down and played Animal Crossing.

Drank tons of beer, ate of tons of turkey. The only political conversations consisted of ten minutes of everyone’s dislike of Trump and how Roy Moore is a terrible human being. PNW Democrat Union families for the win.

Yesterday the expat dev group descended on a middle-eastern hookah bar that was serving a full turkey dinner. Like Burning Man, it was better a couple years ago, but still good. The turkey was good, the stuffing was good, the mashed potatoes were good. They shorted everyone on gravy and there was no cranberry sauce. I can live with that. It was pretty damned awesome.

Even more nice to catch up with other people I hadn't seen in a few months.

The majority of "local beer" small breweries in Japan have been influenced by German brewing and the purity laws. So even when I find it, it's just alt, kolsch, and a weizen or marzen. I am not in love with any of those, and I do love PA and IPA styles, which are hard to find here.  :-\ So, I'm not speaking about you here, to be clear, but I get my panties in a twist when people who enjoy brown ales or sours get pissy about IPA prevalence. They've got 3 or 4 brown ales to the dozen or so IPAs available, true — but if it weren't for the boom in those styles, they wouldn't have anything other than Newcastle Brown and ZERO sours on the shelf to choose from.

My father has a really nasty case of the flu, so we didn't get together today since we have a 1-month-old. First time that's ever happened. But, the last thing we needed was her catching the flu and ending up in the hospital. I grilled hamburgers and weiners since it was just barely warm enough to reasonably fire up the grill, but it was just for my wife and me.

It's actually kinda nice because it just felt like a regular old day off of work. Tomorrow being black Friday is going to be a bit of a mindfuck though, since today didn't feel like Thanksgiving at all.

I tried to have a good day with just the missus and myself. But seemingly everything in the week prior was going against us in every way. Amazon had a good deal on a "Fresh" Diestel turkey on one of their Treasure Trucks. I picked up the bird on Monday and put the box in the fridge. While that chilled out I got some 2 gallon bags sent out by Amazon via AMZL their shipping company. Needless to say the bags I needed never arrived and were delivered to the wrong address. Ok I'll just bag each part of the turkey in a 1 gallon bag... NOPE because the fucking Turkey was frozen solid on Wednesday the night before T-day. I had to water bath the bird for 4 hours before I could cut it up and part it out.

We had a late dinner last night, but I think I did an ok job. The turkey was super moist and everything turned out super tasty!

Yesterday was the first time I didn't do anything for Thanksgiving since I left Japan at the end of '08.  I was the lucky one scheduled to be on-call at work this week, which basically means I am the sole IT person working in case anyone has a problem.   On the bright side, I get paid a nice bonus for doing it, which fueled all my Black Friday purchases.

Was actually pretty quiet Monday and Tuesday night; only got a single call -albeit at 1 AM- on Monday night, and then on Wednesday night multiple calls and emails all came through starting at 11 pm and it quieted down around 12:30 AM after I talked to some lady who emailed to ask if I was still available.  When I responded with "yes, but only for emergencies," she said it was...and of course...it wasn't.   :doge  But after she talked to me, she felt guilty and said she wouldn't call on Thanksgiving.  Gee, thanks.  :lol  My fault for responding that late though.

I stayed home despite everyone at work telling me it would be dead.  I'm even equipped to work from pretty much anywhere with a work phone, laptop, and a wifi card, but it's just so much easier and less stressful to do things from home.  My wife stayed with me although I told her it would be cool if she wanted to make the drive with my parents from ATL to Athens for the family gathering.  We bought a ham and a mint-chocolate pie and my wife got some weird cauliflower mashed potato-thing and that was about it.

And I could have gone to dinner after all- it really was dead.  Only received a single email request that was handled in 30 seconds.  Yesterday I got a reprieve for five hours while someone else handled things in the office (he got a whopping TWO calls and was paid double-time and received holiday pay...that was worth it, lol) and went out to get groceries.  It was dead around town and we figured people were still sleeping off their meals or exhausted from sales.  I made sure to avoid any stores and did everything online as usual.  The news reported that people waited all night outside Best Buy for the chance to buy a discounted TV.  Most of them got sick and didn't get the TV.   Great idea, folks.

Got this weekend left for on-call and am hoping it stays as dead as Thursday and Friday were.  About an hour ago I got an email from someone still in the office (wtf) complaining that something wasn't working, but he never responded, so I figure he must have just given up and sent the message in frustration.  But I'm OK if anything happens- taking off Monday and Tuesday so I actually get a real weekend without being stuck inside the whole time.

We hosted again and it's the last time for a while. I spent almost $200 on all this shit and watch half get thrown away over the course of the next 24 hours. Then I get the pleasure of carting all waste to the dump the next day. My wife did everything but the turkey which I took care of. I woke up at 8:30, lubed the turkey up with a whole stick of soft butter, and put it on a bed of celery. Added salt and pepper, tarpped it with foil, put it in the oven, and went back to bed.
