Title: Bore Halp: Is it worth waiting for v2 of the PS4 VR Headset?
Post by: Kurt Russell on November 24, 2017, 12:29:07 PM
I'm seeing a lot of pretty nice Black Friday deals for the PS4 VR Headset, but I'd imagine it's an attempt to clear out the v1 models ahead of the v2 launch. I'd like to get one eventually as it's a cost effective way to jump into VR without having to pay for the inevitable PC upgrades if I go with Oculus or Vive, so I'm pretty tempted to pull the trigger on one of the Black Friday deals. In terms of software, I'm only really interested in Fallout 4 (when it's released). I don't see any other killer apps for me right now.

I've tried to read up on it, but I really can't see the benefits of waiting for v2 of the headset. Anybody have any strong opinions around whether it's worth the wait for v2?

i'd wait personally. they're still very expensive and like you said there's no must-play games out. not sure if there'll be a version 2, but i'd think version 1 is guaranteed to go down in price at some point in 2018.

Do you mean the new hardware revision coming out soonish?

Yeah. From what I've read, I *think* the v2 has one less cable and something-something-HDR pass through? I don't understand why an HDR pass through would be relevant if I'm using a VR headset and I don't really care about cables. Just wanted to check if I'm missing anything.

I am pretty happy with the V2, but think it's only really sort of worth it at the discounted price. The move controls have impressed the most. I feel like there is enough content to keep me occupied for a bit.

I didn't know it could work on PC, will need to check that out.

Don't bother unless you're in HDR land.

Skyrim VR is making me lose my goddamn mind

Bore Halp: Is it worth waiting for[...] VR [...]?

No, since VR is D.O.A./dead in the water/buried six feet under/etc. etc. etc.

There, thread over. We can all go home.

To seriously answer your question: Since you only have interest in one title (so far): No, don't bother buying it and yes, it's totally worth waiting for the hardware and price to evolve/drop. Maybe version 2 of each of the VR headsets will entice consumers beyond the "gimmick."

Apparently it's already out in the US in some bundles.

I picked one up. I had moderate expectations, but to be honest I was super impressed at how effective it was.

The cabling situation is a bit of a nightmare. I now have a spaghetti mess of cables running to and from my PS4 and something's not quite right there as it is causing choppy audio, which would be indicative of an HDMI issue somewhere along the line. Despite this, when up and running, I couldn't quite believe just how immersive the experience actually is.

Allumette was incredible. It's probably a very average Pixar-lite animation, but the fact that I was in the middle of this huge sky-town in the clouds and I was able to move around, get closer to characters, look underneath them, step away, look at secondary characters on the edge - it just blew me away. I feel like I could watch it five times over and each time see a slightly different animation as I focus and move towards different parts. I'd argue on this basis, that there's more of an argument for VR movies than for VR games at this point.

Batman: Arkham VR is stupidly immersive. For example - I sat in Wayne Manor and actually tried to put my feet up on a footrest that I could see in the game. The bat cave also lends itself well to VR with it's sheer sense of space and scale and standing on Gotham rooftops and looking at the city moving below never gets old. There's not as much of a game as I expected - you don't really move around, you instead shift from highlighted point to highlighted point (very much like the movement in Killer7) and you don't do *that* much Batman stuff - it's more of a use your cool toys to investigate clues and crime scenes type deal - however, it does a great job of selling the feeling that you're actually in Gotham and is a great foundation to build a more interactive experience upon. Also DCEU >>>>>>>>> MCU.

Danger Ball (Playstation VR Worlds) was something I had little to no expectations of and yet ended up playing for a couple of hours. It's essentially air hockey / Pong from a first person perspective, with the paddle moved by your line of sight. It's fast, challenging, addictive and the environment is really effective - the puck whooshes past your head when you miss it.

Tonight is Resident Evil 7. I hear good things.

 - is there a way we can change the topic to make this more of a general VR thread?

I've been balls deep in VR for the last few months.

-- Yes it's still early
-- Yes it's blurry
-- Yes there is some gimmicky garbage

But guess what, I'm 40 years old and have a disposable income and I'm bored with other shit so this is super fun and interesting

Anyway, my #1 Hot Jams of VR are:

Skyrim (once you wrap your head around the wack ass Move controllers)
Resident Evil 7 (the scariest shit I ever dun played, you feel more empowered/less terrified later in the game though)
Megaton Rainfall (FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK it's some cosmic shit)
The Invisible Hours (a little pricey, but next-level storytelling madness)

All I can say is, there's gonna be some exciting stuff on the PSVR front in the near future.

Is it possible to use the VR headset without a TV? I'm at work so I can't experiment.

They had the V2 headsets for all the PSVR games at PSX this past weekend. They're definitely a lot lighter and comfier than the original model. Feels like the rubber flap isn't as ridiculous as well.

REZ demo is shitty. The full game is everything I wanted! :hyper

Also alluette is great.

Curious to know if any of the VR stuff on sale now is worth it lol.

I upgraded to a v2 headset for a tenth of the price due to a well timed trade-in. I also got Doom VFR thrown in as part of the deal.

It's a bad, bad game. It has no fluid movement, you essentially have to jump to a part of the map and stand still and shoot things like a shooting gallery. Bizarrely, this makes me feel motion sickness in a way that just allowing me to free roam wouldn't.

It's bizarre, Skyrim was pretty good given the awfulness of the Move controllers, and Doom VFR is sooooooo bad

Real question, can you play PSVR without headphones? Because 3d audio means jack shit to me since I only have hearing on one fucking ear.

Yeah you can pipe the audio out through the TV as well.
