Title: How old were you when Mario 64 came out?

Was 13 myself, remember all the hype leading up to the launch of the Ultra 64. "Same tech as Jurassic Park"

I remember everyone sperging out over it when I thought it was clunky and bland, having been more impressed with Jumping Flash! the year prior.

15 and was working part-time at a used/import video game store.  During the summer of 1996, My boss paid a ridiculous amount of money to get several Japanese N64s and Mario (I think Pilotwings, too, but nobody cared), then put out these big signs that said "ULTRA 64 IS HERE!!!!!"  It brought in a lot of people who foamed at the mouth over seeing the game running.  (Still didn't top when they brought imported Playstations to Dragoncon before the system launched in the U.S. and showed off Toshinden- that was one of the most insane queues to try a game that I ever remember seeing)

And I didn't care at all.  That was the first time Nintendo really let me down (I even wanted a Virtual Boy when it came out, lol) and I was way more impressed with the imported Jumping Flash! 2 at the time, which I think also had just come out.  I'd put the game on demo opposite Mario 64 and it attracted an equal number of people for a while.  :lol

That was also the first time I saw a new Nintendo system that didn't come with everything needed to hook it up- no video cables were included.  We were told "they figure you probably already own SNES systems and will just use those cables."  Found this funny.  So fucking stupid.  :lol

6. Didn't like it and have never played a non Kart or Party Mario game since. I also didn't like Zelda when it came out and I've disliked Nintendo since then.

9. It totally blew me away when I first played it, still impressed by what it did for the time in terms of graphics and controls.

I was 14, remember saving my money ever since the first "Project Reality" announcements... but when I finally played it at Toys R Us, I wasn't as into it as I thought it would be. Plus, FF7 getting announced for PS1 meant that I had to get that system first.

Here are the release dates since they aren't in the OP.  Also that poll   :doge

JP: June 23, 1996
NA: September 29, 1996
EU: March 1, 1997

I remember my friend in elementary school had a Nintendo 64 promo VHS and we would watch it over and over. The part showing off the Mario 64 controls blew our minds. I don't think this was the specific vid, the opening segment is different, but the Mario part is the same at 3 minutes.

http://youtu.be/sPysl3tfS4o?t=3m

I didn't actually get an N64 until the Christmas after Ocarina came out so I played that and Mario back to back.

 :whoo

I didn't get one until after Zelda was out, too.  The N64 was the first game system I didn't care about buying.  Occasionally I did borrow one from work to play Goldeneye multiplayer, but even then I didn't care to buy one.  The only reason I ended up getting one was because the hype surrounding Ocarina Of Time was so insanely off the charts that even my grandfather, who knew nothing about video games and never care about electronic-whatever, heard about it and bought me a Nintendo 64 and the game for the holidays.

I didn't really like anything 3D that Nintendo did until the Game Cube came out.   Also have never been able to get into 3D Zelda games until BoTW.

I was 15 when it came out. I waited in line with a friend who got a N64 but I really wasn’t into console games at then. I was in my insufferable PC master race phase.

11 years old.  It seemed unreal to me at the time.  I had a friend who had this tape...

...and we watched it constantly until Christmas time when we all got our N64s with a copy of the game.

What PC games were you playing at the time?

Diablo ofc

I have that dumb VHS tape promoting Star Fox 64. The one with a sleazy Sony guy and a dimwitted Sega guy torturing Mario. watched it a hundred times, and I'm pretty sure it's the genesis* of my love for crappy take that ads.

What PC games were you playing at the time?

Warcraft II, Duke Nukem 3D, Full Throttle, Quake and the enhanced rerelease of TIE fighter (with a crazy ass flight stick/keyboard setup), probably. I don't remember.

dude you missed out. single player was fun but kind of uninspired, but between the multiplayer and the mods that game had a great scene. it had the original team fortress and headhunter!

10. Wasn’t too impressed but I’m probably salty because friend brought his n64 over for a sleepover for my fucking birthday and I didn’t get to play it once because he hogged the game the whole time. First time playing it was at a Toys R Us. I just didn’t get the big deal.

Final Fantasy VII, MGS, and Ocarina however blew my mind.

I’ve come to appreciate and even like the game over the years but it took an open mind.

I was 7 and I really only remember it from commercials and hearing friends talking about it.  At the time we only had a Genesis and it would be years until we got a N64. By then Mario 64 was old news. The vast majority of my N64 memories are of playing multiplayer games, I don't think I ever actually owned a purely single-player game for the system. Did end up playing it eventually and yeah it's a great game.

13. I was a PC Master Race Gamer at the time, but I played it at Toys R Us and thought it was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen. It looked so good and the controls were so fluid. Racing the penguin down the ice slide was like woooaaaah, so fast! It was just what you'd expect from the master, Miyamoto-sensei.

I was 21.

I was working a shitty factory job at the time and would get off third shift and stop at the Toys R Us on the way home and play it for an hour or so. Normally, I would be above doing such a thing, but that game had some voodoo hex on me.

I already owned the Playstation, but I was really impressed how they nailed the "fluidity" of movement in that game. After playing so many 3D games that felt like I was controlling a tank, Mario 64 really got me excited for  the future of 3D gaming.

Toys R Us was the shit back in the day. I used to have my dad drop me off so I could play DKC2 at the demo kiosk for like an hour.

Besides the controls, it being an open 3D world you can interact and fuck around in, and that feeling good, is what amazed me at my tender young age. Not the first game to do open world shit, but it was done well.

In my mind, GTA3 was the next open world wow moment.

N64 really blew me away with the fluidity of movement and texture filtering. The second I booted it up at a demo kiosk and I saw those perfectly smooth marble textures in Bomb-omb Battlefield I became an N64 warrior.

The other game that blew me away is Waverace 64. I probably played that game even more than Mario, due to its high replay value. Those water physics  :lawd
