That first album was such a killer. I loved her voice and her singing style. :fbm

I'm fine with her follow-up stuff but the pace its come at is... frustrating and I feel like she was never relevant in the same way again after that initial album. But maybe this is just me wishing her career was more impactful to the general public.

Aside from getting screwed by her label, didn't she have a mental breakdown or something?

There have been a lot of questions about mental health issues over the years. Not that she is the first artist to experience this kinda stuff.

For sure, just trying to offer an explanation for her lack of musical output.

I love Fiona Apple. I'd still put her second album in my personal Top 10 favorites. One of the few artists who I'd actually buy the actual album on either vinyl or CD, just to ensure I have a hard copy. I didn't fall in love with her last album the way I did her first two, but it was still pretty solid.
Also, I hate that my favorite song of hers is a Beatles cover, but

When The Pawn is a hell of an album. It's been too long since I listened through her discography.
-
She’s no Jewel.
-
I thought so too but she imploded.
In her Criminal song I always misheard the lyric as "I've come to you 'cause I need god and pickachu."
Really, the song is better that way.

She has multiple good to great albums. What else can you ask for from a musician?

For them to do their job more than once a decade.

:confused
Are you talking that Boycott thing? Apparently it was her choice to redo the album.

Is that Elvis and Fiona doing a Savage Garden cover? Awesome.
-
"Paper Bag" is a song/video I've always loved...iirc it being a single and video was her response to the label asking for a youth friendly single. :doge
Aside from getting screwed by her label, didn't she have a mental breakdown or something?
She has OCD, and maybe is bipolar (?), and the album that would've filled the hole in her releases she scrapped, re-recorded and scrapped again because it never felt right. She talked about this on Marc Maron's podcast.
Though I don't think she talked about this:
Fiona Apple covers “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory as part of a new Chipotle campaign about factory farming

The Idler Wheel Is Wiser is her best work but it's 6 years old, fuck me.
At least she's more prolific than Portishead, it's been ten fucking years since their last one.
-
I never realized I was surrounded by so many Fiona fans. She's my favorite artist ever.
I haven't encountered someone that has such intensity and truly pours her heart into all her lyrics. She's amazing at doing covers of other people's works and has a voice that has a timeless element to it. She can do songs from the 30's and it still sounds good.
Her Costello cover is probably my favorite performance on youtube, but she has one from her early days of Never is a Promise on Letterman that matches it.

The quality is potato, but the performance is great. She wrote that song when she was 15 years old. Amazing.

Portishead's last album was one of my biggest musical disappointments ever. I get that they wanted to evolve and do something different yet familiar, but I was hoping/expecting them to pretty much go full bore on the orchestration and symphony stuff. Instead they went the polar opposite direction. Live in NYC is still one of the best live albums ever though.

Hey, I'm salty, too. She's hands down my favorite singer. Bought this album ten years ago and I fell in love:

Did you grab the leaked version, which is what I think that YouTube is from? It's pretty great.
-
The leaked version aka the unfinished Jon Brion version is superior.
-
I remember having 2 or 3 different versions of "A Better Version of Me"

I just wish I had one. :'(
-
The label released a version was largely produced by Mike Elizondo, who was a session bass player/ghostwriter for Dr Dre. So the album has a lot of cool baselines. I like it. Whereas the unfinished/leaked version of the album was produced by Jon Brion.
I haven't listened to both in full in ages, but I remember liking the unreleased version more.
-
I'm definitely on #TeamUnreleasedVersion
-
I don't hate the Elizondo version as much as some on it's face, but knowing this is the dude who co-produces every terrible Eminem beat has instilled a deep seated loathing for him. The Jon Brion version is indeed much better though imo
-
it's a shame that the audio for the jon brion bootleg is potato

:preach

Got to see her in Cleveland last tour. Hope she will make another round.
There were hints thata new album is being finished up this year.
