Title: Sea of Thieves
Post by: Kurt Russell on March 23, 2018, 06:35:25 AM
Don't see a thread for it yet, so I'll start it..

Sea of Thieves Reaches 1 million players in 48 hours (https://www.rollingstone.com/glixel/news/sea-of-thieves-reached-1-million-players-in-first-48-hours-w518276)

Sea of Thieves put anti-toxicity strategies into game's design (https://www.polygon.com/2018/3/22/17153164/sea-of-thieves-toxic-brig-scuttle-ship-code-of-conduct)

Sea of Thieves servers can't keep up with demand (http://www.bgr.in/gaming/sea-of-thieves-servers-just-cant-keep-up-with-the-demand/)

Has anybody played it yet? I read on Twitter that it's essentially a whole game in the style of Destiny 2 patrols.

In an alternative universe this is was a smash hit on the GCN for Rare, kind of feels like it belongs there.

There's a video in that Polygon article that shows them having to go below into the ship, take out a bucket and scoop up water leaking in, and then go back to the deck and throw it overboard.  WHAT FUN

They're using the sunk cost fallacy model pioneered by Destiny.

1 - Announce new MMO game
2 - Hype
3 - HYPE
4 - More hype
5 - Launch framework of game
6 - Users complain about lack of content but continue to play because $60
7 - Users eventually accept lack of content
8 - Drop expansion pack offering more content. Because of low-content acceptance, this feels like CHRISTMAS 2.0. Make another $30
9 - Repeat step 8
10 - Repeat step 8
11 - Repeat step 8 and introduce paid cosmetic microtransactions
12 - Announce sequel and go to step 2

I tried to watch it on Twitch over the weekend and was bored to tears.

The respawn system was stupid as hell. You'd have a crew fight their asses off to beat another crew and then they'd respawn right on top of them and have to do it all over again.

"The problem is that Sea of Thieves is not a complete game," Tassi writes. "It just isn’t. It’s maybe 5 or 10% of one, but given what other open world/co-op games can offer you for $60, it’s just astonishing how little Sea of Thieves offers."

I mean if you take the gameplay, missions, lore and "story" out of Destiny, this is similar. But it's really nothing like it. It's No Man's Sky in the sea, with even less to do, less interesting exploration and a LOT of downtime. I paid €2 for two months of game pass to play it and I regret it.

Don’t know why anyone would pay $60 for this when you can try it for free for at least two weeks with game pass. “I regret spending $5” is silly.

The respawn system was stupid as hell. You'd have a crew fight their asses off to beat another crew and then they'd respawn right on top of them and have to do it all over again.

I’m having fun but yeah this sucks. Can’t count the times we’ve just let our ship sink, had one person run a brand new one in and finish off the attackers with a fully replenished inventory.

All the Destiny folks I know jumped ship to MHW when that came out.

This entire game has less content than most tutorial levels in other games. Pretty water, though. My advice to anyone interested is to use the free 14 day trial on Game Pass. Be prepared to cancel on day two.

I regret wasting my two months of gamepass for €2 on this, I would have rather kept that for State of Decay 2. I don't regret spending the €2 to play it.

Rare looked around their offices and wondered.
"Gee, what Nintendo concept haven't we ripped off yet guys"
"We could do another Perfect Dark or Banjo"
"SHUT UP DAVE YOU'RE FIRED!"
"Now, remember when they did that Wind Waker thing with the sea that was totally barren"
"Sounds good, let's work on that I'll give Phil a ringer"
"Cool beans guys but really for me to put in on my shirt and greenlit it, it needs to have ONLINE and IMMERSION and CLOUD"
"O.k."

*4 years later*

"WOW Guys, 4 years, can't wait to see how you've improved the Xbox(TM) brand with another stellar exclusive in the greatest year in Xbox History."
"We can't wait to see it either Phil"
"Sooo uuhh, where's is the rest of the game"
"It's called minimalism Phil, it's the first minimalist game"

I will say the PC port is really good though, running it at 1440p with max detail and never drops below 60fps

Guess it helps when you don't have to render any content

MS is pathetic.

How do you support a console with such little software effort? Fuck how do you push a new revision with such little software? I don't think any major console manufacture has been as bad with first party support as MS has this gen. And unlike with the 2nd half of the 360, it's not like they have the mainstream and third parties to coast on.  I know the resetnerds are all "well MS has been so great great on hardware". Who the fuck cares? You made an awesome 4k console with nothing that takes advantage of it. You've made strives in backwards comp, on games I can run better on my PC. So excited for Xbox.
Title: Re: Sea of Thieves
Post by: kingv on March 25, 2018, 11:43:14 AM
I agree 100%

There’s something really low effort feeling about all of MS first party games this generation.

Crackdown 3 looks like hot garbage and will probably suck worse than 2. And state of decay was always a low budget indie game. It barely even counts as an exclusive.

Nintendo (and Sony to a lesser extent) make having a good first-party line-up look so easy that I'm happy Microsoft is always there to show how difficult it actually is.

Microsoft closed nearly all their studios and ruined those that they didn't close.
They've intentionally handicapped themselves.

If they had bought Nintendo they would've ran Mario into the ground by now, fired Miyamoto, Koizumi and Aonuma and had the designers of Wii Music build a Zelda game.  :doge

I don't understand what is going on over there. I get the feeling that the leads of the game org are attempting to recover from the disastrous leadership of the previous regime, but are still getting stomped and are incapable of recovering thanks to douchebaggery further up the MS chain. (Shrugs)

Microsoft changed leadership in a LOT of places, not just games. Maybe Nadella just doesn't see something that loses as much money as games development as being a worthwhile endeavor?

Quote
Former first-party
Bungie – Halo series
Twisted Pixel Games – The Gunstringer, LocoCycle, The Maw, The Adventures of Captain Smiley, 'Splosion Man series

Defunct first-party
Aces Studio – Microsoft Flight Simulator series
Digital Anvil – Brute Force, Freelancer
Ensemble Studios – Age of Empires series, Halo Wars
FASA Studio – MechWarrior series, Shadowrun
Hired Gun – Halo 2 for Windows Vista
Lionhead Studios – Fable series, Black & White series
Microsoft Game Studios Japan – Magatama, Phantom Dust
Press Play – Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, Kalimba
XSN Sports – NHL Rivals 2004

Former second-party
Beep Industries – Voodoo Vince
BioWare – Mass Effect, Jade Empire
Fuel Industries – Tinker
Media.Vision – Sneakers
FromSoftware – Ninja Blade
Mistwalker – Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey

Defunct second-party
Artoon – Blinx series, Blue Dragon
Bizarre Creations – Project Gotham Racing series
Carbonated Games – Hexic series
feelplus – Lost Odyssey
Game Republic – Every Party
Hudson Soft – Fuzion Frenzy 2
Realtime Worlds – Crackdown

I dunno, it feels like looking at this list there aren't as many missteps as you would think. Lionhead definitely got fucked by Fable Adventures and Microsoft not being able to decide what that should be. Who the shit remembers Press Play though? Apparently they were making a multiplayer survival game. Maybe MS decided to just get PUBG as a timed exclusive instead?

I admit I didn't realize From had been a MS second party at one point.

At least we now know that the game is going to grow and evolve because they've been listening to the feedback from the community.  Which cannot be emphasized enough. They're listening. They have been listening. And they will continue to listen. To feedback. And the community. Now, the game. Man, it's gonna grow. And evolve. So much growing and evolving.

It feels like MS got everything right on the 360, and everything wrong on Xbone.

I oknow that’s wrong because there were disc scratching drives and RROD and an I’ll advised push to prioritize the Japanese market from a luxury item approach (e.g. Apple, Starbucks, Le Creuset). But the prelaunch blunders with One and a lack of innovation really hit them this time.
